The new burger, the Big Arch, is currently being piloted in Canada and Portugal. By using a brand name rather than a descriptor — like calling it the Big Burger — companies can "signal superiority," Kerrigan said. "And so you elevate what is a big burger to a branded shiny thing." "You show that you are in someone's club or part of their tribe by using the same kind of brand names," she said.

Olympic officials on Friday tried urgently to rebut what they described as widespread “misinformation” that had turned a 46-second Olympic boxing match at the Paris Games into a forum for fierce debates and complicated questions about biology and competitive advantage in women’s sports. Mr. Adams stressed at a news conference that Khelif is not transgender. “There has been some confusion that somehow it’s a man fighting a woman,” Mr. Adams said. “The answer is yes,” according to their eligibility, passport and history. As a Republican governor who has won four elections in a purple state, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to win. Catchy one-liners — calling Vice President Harris a “bum,” “not a serious person” and “bottom of the barrel” — might rile up the base, but they do little to connect with independent voters needed to close the deal in November. Independent voters are independent for a reason. They are not driven to the polls by personal attacks. The message from both sides must be inspirational, focused and about the results that can be delivered for the American people.

Paris CNN —With the first chapter of Simone Biles’ comeback at the Olympics already complete, the next is ready to be written. All this comes not long since Biles said she had considered walking away from gymnastics having experienced a mental block called “the twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics. “She’s fun to be around, relatable, and what you see is what you get,” Katie Walsh, the director of Netflix’s recently released documentary, “Simone Biles: Rising,” told CNN. “Leading up to the Paris Olympics, we wanted to show a larger audience that Simone was not only the G.O.A.T. Prickles have been around for at least 400 million years, dating back to when ferns and their relatives emerged with some bearing prickles on their stems. Lonely Guy genesBy removing prickles from various species, including roses and eggplants, the authors found that a LOG gene was responsible for the prickles in about 20 types of plants studied. LOG-related genes are found in all plants, even dating back to mosses, which are regarded as the first dry-land plant, Lippman said. “(LOG genes) have been repeatedly co-opted (a biological shift in a trait’s function) in different plant species for the formation of prickles, and also repeatedly lost in lineages where prickles are lost. For agricultural purposes, removing prickles could make harvesting easier and pave the way to get lesser-known produce into grocery stores.

Right now, domestic airlines treat traveling families differently. A handful, such as JetBlue Airways, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, guarantee that parents can sit next to their children. But on the others, parents are left to pay for more expensive assigned seats or to bank on the good will of strangers. President Biden even called on Congress to pass legislation targeting fees for families to sit together. “Many airlines still don’t guarantee family seating, which means parents wonder if they’ll have to pay extra just to be seated with their young child,” Mr. Buttigieg said in a statement.

The labor market has come into better balance and the unemployment rate remains low. Inflation has eased substantially from a peak of 7 percent to 2.5 percent. We are strongly committed to returning inflation to our 2 percent goal in support of a strong economy that benefits everyone. decided to leave our policy interest rate unchanged and to continue to reduce our securities holdings. According to Gallup, Cox writes, “A majority (54 percent) of divorced men identify as Republican compared to 41 percent of divorced women,” the largest gender gap among divorced people in two decades. As my colleague Thomas Edsall noted in May, in recent years there’s also a yawning gender gap among young voters, with young women becoming increasingly Democratic and young men becoming increasingly Republican. Edsall quoted the Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who cites Donald Trump’s “chaotic and divisive style” and lack of respect, among the reasons that young women have been fleeing the G.O.P. Young women, Lake said, “want stability and are very concerned about division and the potential for violence.”All this data was collected when Joe Biden was on course to be the Democratic presidential nominee.

DuPont's water and protection segment may have seen a year-over-year decline in sales, but what matters most is that revenue was up 8% sequentially. Notably, DuPont's Water Solutions and Tyvek medical packaging businesses in China — an economy that's lately been a thorn in the side of so many companies — helped drive the quarter-over-quarter expansion. While there's been speculation that DuPont's water business is attracting interest from peers, management said the company has not had conversations about an outright sale. The range for operating EBITDA was raised to $3.06 billion to $3.11 billion, up from $2.9 billion to $3.05 billion previously. DuPont's third-quarter guidance of roughly $3.2 billion in sales, $815 million in operating EBITDA and adjusted EPS of $1.03 essentially matched expectations.

Cats vs. Dogs? Cats Are Better. - The New York Times

It’s not easy not being a dog person. I once moderated a conversation for The Times between Susan Orlean and Julie Klam, both authors of books about dogs. “Everybody who reads my book is a dog person,” Klam, whom I also profiled for her memoir, “You Had Me at Woof,” said at one point. The very bad date in the story “Cat Person” has, of course, two cats. By contrast, I could see the appeal of dogs if they didn’t need to be trained, didn’t bark, didn’t need to be walked, didn’t shed, didn’t smell, didn’t require washing or grooming.

Read previewAn Olympics ad from Google depicting a father using its Gemini AI assistant to help his daughter compose a letter to her favorite athlete has drawn sharp criticism from online commentators. Google's "Dear Sydney" spot first aired on TV during the broadcast of the opening ceremony on July 24 and is also available on YouTube. Related stories"It follows a coherent story, focuses on characters with agency and vitality, and prioritizes people over the product," said Jon Evans, System1 chief customer officer, of Google's ad. Still, several ad experts have said Google's marketing department — which created the ad in-house rather than using an ad agency — should have done a better job of reading the room. In its first major ad blitz targeting Harris, the Trump campaign is zeroing in on her immigration record in ads running across several key battleground states. It’s a sign that the former president has settled on a longstanding GOP line of attack against the vice president, after grappling with the abrupt change atop the Democratic ticket. It’s part of what the Harris campaign said will be a $50 million blitz in the run-up to next month’s Democratic National Convention – fueled, in part, by the record-breaking fundraising the Harris campaign has seen since Biden’s departure from the race and endorsement of her candidacy a little more than a week ago. During an influx of unaccompanied migrant children, Biden tasked the vice president with overseeing diplomatic efforts in Central America. “Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris can be heard saying in the ad.

Ackman Scales Back Multibillion-Dollar I.P.O.

The billionaire investor William Ackman appears to have scaled back his ambitions for an initial public offering in New York — at least in terms of its size. The investment vehicle that Mr. Ackman plans to take public on the New York Stock Exchange next week — Pershing Square USA — is aiming to raise $2 billion in the share sale, according to a regulatory filing on Tuesday. That’s a far cry from the $10 billion or more that Mr. Ackman discussed as a target earlier this year. In investor meetings in recent months, he had floated an even larger number: $25 billion. The $2 billion figure is a place holder, and Pershing Square USA could raise more as investors put in orders through Monday night, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were private.

How the election is dividing techThe tech world has long been divided by rivalries: Macs versus PCs, open source versus closed source. It’s a reminder, as DealBook has noted, that Silicon Valley’s libertarian wing is feeling more emboldened to flex its money and influence to buck what has become a traditionally Democratic consensus. Who’s who: Some of the most vocal Democratic donors among the tech elite are Hoffman; Vinod Khosla, the venture capitalist; Aaron Levie, the C.E.O.
