A drug that has been used for decades to treat allergic asthma and hives significantly reduced the risk of life-threatening reactions in children with severe food allergies who were exposed to trace amounts of peanuts, cashews, milk and eggs, researchers reported on Sunday. The drug, Xolair, has already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for adults and children over age 1 with food allergies. It is the first treatment that drastically cuts the risk of serious reactions — like anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that causes the body to go into shock — after accidental exposures to various food allergens. The results of the researchers’ study, presented at the annual conference of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in Washington, were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

“Lately, there’s been so many overdose deaths that were inadvertent. She applauded the new RAND survey for shedding light on what adults go through when they lose someone to overdose. “Those are some of the regions where we see the highest number of overdose deaths. This is also rarely discussed in scientific and policy circles,” Pollini said of the RAND survey. “Because the data come from a survey of adults, the study does not provide insight into how overdose deaths impact children.

Apple releases free new sports app for iPhone
  + stars: | 2024-02-21 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The app, called Apple Sports, does one thing well: show sports scores from all the major teams and leagues. Apple services chief Eddy Cue said the company designed the app to be fast and simple for multiple quick checks per day. This new app, which won't come pre-installed on iPhones, is tightly integrated with Apple's other Services apps, such as the TV app and News app. It works for sports Apple carries, as well as games on streaming services that are connected to the Apple TV app, many of which still require a cable subscription but will increasingly be available from over-the-top streamers. Apple will also have features that will allow users to follow college basketball's March Madness tournament in the app, Cue said.

New York CNN —Lionel Messi’s debut in his first full Major League Soccer season might not cost fans the extraordinary prices seen last year for his first-ever game with Inter Miami, but they do show that “Messi Mania” hasn’t diminished despite his rocky preseason. That’s 1,257% more expensive than the cheapest, or “get in” price of last season’s home opener when it cost $7 for a seat. Prices on the secondary market are elevated for the rest of Inter Miami’s season with tickets about 70% more expensive than last year. In particular, Inter Miami sales are 150-times higher compared to the start of last season and is the most in-demand MLS team, with the Los Angeles Galaxy in second and the New England Revolution in third. “The surge in sales for Inter Miami, and the league as a whole, are a testament to his legacy as a soccer star,” said StubHub spokesperson Adam Budell told CNN.

CNN —Yale University has issued a formal apology for its historical ties to slavery. The apology is part of Yale’s “ongoing work to understand its history and connections to slavery,” the university said in a news release Friday. Yale also announced the release of a book, “Yale and Slavery: A History,” by professor David W. Blight with the Yale and Slavery Research Project, and a range of actions and initiatives based on the project’s findings. “Confronting this history helps us to build a stronger community and realize our aspirations to create a better future,” Yale President Peter Salovey said in the release. Researchers found more than 6% of U.S. adults reported ever experiencing symptoms of long COVID as of 2022. Extrapolated to the U.S. population, it would mean more than 16 million adult Americans had experienced long COVID symptoms as of the survey. “State-level estimates might also help identify geographic disparities in Long COVID across the United States that could guide interventions to promote health equity.”Symptoms of long COVID can include tiredness, fatigue, difficulty thinking, “brain fog,” shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, menstrual changes and post-exertional malaise. The percentage of Americans who have experienced symptoms of long COVID are surely higher now than they were in 2022. Research published last week in the journal Pediatrics estimated that up to 5.8 million children have developed long COVID.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Workers from Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida have released 11 cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles back into the Atlantic Ocean. The turtles were released earlier this week near Cape Canaveral after two months of rehabilitation, the aquarium said in a news release Thursday. They were part of a group of 16 turtles that arrived at the Tampa Bay area facility from the New England Aquarium in Massachusetts in December. Rehabilitation facilities in the Northeast frequently collaborate with other facilities to treat cold-stunned turtles. A total of 52 sea turtles were flown this past winter to Florida, where they were treated by Clearwater Marine Aquarium, as well as Mote Marine Laboratory, Florida Aquarium and Loggerhead Marine Life Center.

Not fun.”Many scientists who study the intersection of climate change, flooding, winter storms and sea level rise agree the kind of damage Levy experienced was more of a sign of things to come than an anomaly. Climate change is forecast to bring more hurricanes to the Northeast as waters warm, some scientists say. In the Northeast, the problem of climate change is especially acute because of forecasted sea level rise here, said Hannah Baranes, a coastal scientist with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute's Climate Center in Portland, Maine. “This is a real moment to consider how much flooding is in several feet of sea level rise,” Baranes said. Vermont, which also suffered heavy damage in Hurricane Irene in 2011, is working to establish statewide floodplain standards, Moore told the Maine Climate Council.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — At least eight people were injured in a shooting at the end of the parade to celebrate the Super Bowl win by the Kansas City Chiefs, sending terrified fans running for cover and marring yet another high-profile public event in gun violence. After the Denver Nuggets’ championship parade last year, a shooting took place in downtown Denver that injured two people, though police said they didn’t believe the incident was associated with the actual celebration. Also last year, an argument resulted in shots being fired at a parking lot near the Texas Rangers’ World Series championship parade. The wintry mess left both parties racing to rewrite last-minute campaign plans and sophisticated models to understand how the storm might affect turnout. But many Republican voters still prefer to vote on Election Day, and their party is accustomed to closing a gap. The party has won nearly every major election on Long Island since 2021, partly on the strength of its turnout operation. Peter T. King, a former Republican congressman, conceded that the snow could cost his party a couple of percentage points. A nor’easter disrupted daily life across the Northeast on Tuesday, upending school and work commutes, as rain turned to a slushy mix and then to snow in many regions. Some parts of New England were braced for more snow than they were likely to get as the storm rerouted itself. New York City was expecting up to 8 inches. In all, the weather was good news for small children and dogs, who quickly found their ways to parks and sledding hills — but was less pleasant for delivery workers on bikes and scooters.
