BEIJING — China on Monday launched the third and final module to complete its permanent space station, realizing a more than decade-long endeavor to maintain a constant crewed presence in orbit. Many waved Chinese flags and wore T-shirts emblazoned with the characters for China, reflecting the deep national pride invested in the space program and the technological progress it represents. China’s crewed space program is officially three decades old this year. The U.S. excluded China from the International Space Station because of its military ties. Prior to launching the Tianhe module, China’s Manned Space Program launched a pair of single-module stations that it crewed briefly as test platforms.
BEIJING, Oct 31 (Reuters) - China on Monday launched the last of the three modules that will comprise its space station, set to be the second permanently inhabited outpost in low-earth orbit after the NASA-led International Space Station. In April 2021, China began construction of its space station with the launch of the Tianhe module, the main living quarters for astronauts. The space station also caps President Xi Jinping's 10 years as leader of China's ruling Communist Party. Russia's space agency in August unveiled a physical model of a planned Russian-built space station, the final form of which would be years away. Two more missions this year are needed before China's station is ready for operation.
It is also reacting to a new U.S. law that has raised concern the remains of Germany's formerly-dominant solar industry could relocate to the United States. China's production is also around 10%-20% cheaper that in Europe, separate data from European Solar Manufacturing Council ESMC shows. Dries Acke, the Policy Director at industry body SolarPower Europe, said the body had written to the European Commission urging action. Berlin-based residential solar energy supplier Zolar said orders have risen by 500% year-on-year since the Ukraine war began in February, but clients might have to wait for six-to-nine months to get a solar system installed. "The signs for the solar industry in Germany are much, much better now," he said.

STOCKHOLM, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Swedish truck maker Volvo Group (VOLVb.ST) said on Wednesday its plant in Ghent in Belgium would start to produce battery modules in 2025. "The investment decision to install battery module manufacturing capacity in Ghent is another important step for the Volvo Group to shape its future value chain for battery systems," it said in a statement. The new manufacturing line would be able to use battery cells both from partners and from a planned battery cell plant in Sweden, Volvo Group said. Volvo Group has an ambition that at least 35% of vehicles sold will be electric by 2030. Its plant in Gothenburg in Sweden builds heavy-duty electric trucks, and the Ghent truck factory will start doing so too next year.

WASHINGTON — James A. McDivitt, who commanded the Apollo 9 mission testing the first complete set of equipment to go to the moon, has died. He passed on a chance to land on the moon and instead became the space agency’s program manager for five Apollo missions after the Apollo 11 moon landing. ... it was like cellophane and tin foil put together with Scotch tape and staples!”Unlike many of his fellow astronauts, McDivitt didn’t yearn to fly from childhood. McDivitt didn’t have money for college growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “And being the second or third guy wasn’t that important to me.”So McDivitt went into management, first of the Apollo lunar lander, then for the Houston part of the entire program.

WOLFSBURG, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is looking at automating 20-30% of production at its upcoming Trinity plant near its Wolfsburg headquarters, the plant's chief production officer said on Tuesday. "Assembly is still 90% manual work," Sebastian Schmickartz said at a suppliers summit in Wolfsburg. The Trinity plant, where the German carmaker will build a new flagship electric sedan, is due to begin pre-series production in 2025, with the official start of production in 2026. Volkswagen brand production chief Christian Vollmer told Reuters earlier this year the carmaker hoped this production strategy would help boost its productivity and keep its upper hand in the European market. There's also money to be made: The EV battery market could hit $360 billion by 2030, according to McKinsey. At Insider, we've looked at white-hot EV battery technologies that give automakers the EV performance they need at the price their customers want. It just led a $400 million investment into the little-known EV battery startup that could make it work. Giants like Tesla, GM, and Ford are going to be desperate for EV materials in the next decade. The soon-to-be $339 billion battery industry is on a hiring tear to power the shift to electric cars.

Viral claims that the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) is purchasing “porn literacy” materials and including them in their curriculum for students are untrue. On Sept. 13, the IFF published an article titled “Idaho’s government offers “porn literacy,” other corrupting practices to k-12 students,” (here). (The article’s first paragraph uses different wording to the headline, saying the DHW purchases “materials and training” from ETR “an interest group promoting porn literacy” – not that Idaho’s DHW offers porn literacy). The descriptions of the courses and table of contents make no mention of pornography or “porn literacy.” Stahl told Reuters the agency never considered the use of any “porn literacy” materials. Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) has not purchased “porn literacy” materials and included them in sex-ed curricula for students.
Mark T. Vande Hei, 55, is a NASA astronaut who spent a year in space orbiting Earth. I completed my training to become a NASA astronaut in 2011. In March, I returned to Earth after spending 355 days in orbit aboard the International Space Station. On this latest flight, the Russians added two new modules, so the ISS now seems closer to a seven-bedroom home. Though I didn't go out on a spacewalk myself during this latest flight because of a pinched nerve in my neck, I have in the past.

But despite covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is still a relative mystery. While working at NASA, he developed technology to power ocean robots by harnessing “the naturally occurring temperature difference” of the sea, Chao told CNN Business. This dives a kilometer down to examine the chemistry and shape of the seabed, using sonar to create a map of the surrounding area. Attaching Seatrec’s energy system adds another $25,000, Chao said. “Unlike mapping the Earth’s surface where we can use a camera [or] satellites, at sea, light does not penetrate through the water column.
