Elon Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, appeared to encourage a form of voter fraud in a post on X. It appeared to echo conspiracy theories about large-scale voter fraud that have been shared by Elon Musk. The code, however, doesn’t appear to forbid Maye Musk’s statements of encouragement, Persily said. Maye Musk’s post was made the day her son spoke at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania — where Trump was injured in an assassination attempt in July. Proponents of the laws say they prevent voter fraud, which studies have found to be extremely rare.

Women make up roughly half of U.S. labor union membership, but representation in top level union leadership positions has lagged, even in female-dominated industries and particularly for women of color. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that Black and Latina women experience a particularly wide gender pay gap. Juliana Yamada / APBlack and Latina women are driving labor union growth in the U.S. amid a decades-long decline in membership. In 2023, Black women’s union membership rate notched a slight bump from 10.3% to 10.5%, while Latinas went up from 8.5% to 8.8%. Momentum for Black and Latina women rising into labor union leadership has picked up in the last five years.

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. In the gun case, Mexico officials say gun companies should be held accountable for violent crime across the border involving their products. Circuit Court of Appeals revived the case, saying that the liability shield did not extend to Mexico’s specific claims. Lower courts, including the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, ruled for the state agency, but Ames then turned to the Supreme Court. The U.S. has added two new Chinese companies to a Xinjiang trade blacklist over forced labor accusations. The Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday that a Chinese steel manufacturer and an artificial sweetener maker would be placed on the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List. The list, which now includes 75 entities, bans imports that are made in full or in part in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Region, based on the assumption that forced labor of China's Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities was used in their manufacturing. The European Union has endorsed new laws that will ban products made using forced labor and require big firms to preform human rights and environmental audits on overseas suppliers. Taiwan is also reportedly considering its own bill on forced labor, similar to the UFLPA.

Miami Dolphins are in advanced talks to sell minority stake in team to Ares Management, billionaire Joe TsaiThe Miami Dolphins are in advanced talks to sell a minority stake in the team to private equity firm Ares Management and billionaire Joe Tsai, CNBC has learned, highlighting the growing trend of owners looking to build their sports portfolios to include multiple teams and operate their own stadiums to maximize revenue. CNBC has valued the Miami Dolphins as the league's eighth most valuable team at $7.1 billion, which does not include the stadium. The Miami Dolphins and the NFL declined to comment, and Tsai's BSE Global did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Businessman Stephen Ross purchased the Miami Dolphins in 2009 for $1.1 billion. This allows him to bring in revenue from events held at the stadium such as the Miami Grand Prix and Miami Open tennis tournament.

As Donald Trump calls for overhauling the Affordable Care Act with a new health care system, one Republican senator running for an influential leadership position says the party should combine that pursuit with a major tax bill in the new year. “We’ll have an opportunity next year, when it comes time to extend the Trump tax cuts, to adopt new policies that again will make health care more affordable and more personalized,” Cotton said. “Because a lot of health care in this country does go through our tax code. “Because the Democrats have become so obstructionist on President Trump, the opportunity to pass major legislation next year will probably be centered on the extension of the Trump tax cuts from 2017 in addition to other measures,” Cotton said. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who sits on the Finance Committee that oversees tax and health care policy, said Congress will scrutinize Trump’s litany of expensive proposals in a tax bill.

Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —Australia’s national broadcaster has released an internal review that found “systemic” racism within its ranks, prompting an apology from the managing director to all current and former staff. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) review was announced last year after high profile Indigenous anchor Stan Grant stepped away from anchoring duties, accusing the network of failing to publicly defend him from racist attacks. The report released Tuesday, titled “Listen Loudly, Act Strongly,” found that “systemic” racism exists within the ABC and that staff members also experience racism from external sources. Of 120 staff members interviewed by external consultants, only one said they hadn’t personally experienced racism. However, that person said they were “aware of racism occurring at the ABC.”“This response overwhelmingly indicates that racism exists within the ABC workplace, and that ABC staff are subjected to racism from external individuals and organisations in connection with their work,” the report found.

"I'm not running to terminate the ACA," former President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post in March. That is, unless he could "come up with a plan that's going to cost our people, our population, less money and be better health care than Obamacare." Around 60% of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the 2010 health care law, a recent KFF poll found. The Harris campaign released a report on Monday that paints a dire picture of health care under a hypothetical Trump administration. The average ACA plan deductible, or amount a person must spend before their coverage kicks in, was over $3,000 in 2024, with some plan deductibles exceeding $7,000, KFF found.

And then, with the US presidential elections now less than five weeks away, there is the prospect of a second Donald Trump presidency. Newly appointed France's Prime Minister Michel Barnier arrives for the handover ceremony with outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal at the Hotel Matignon in Paris, France, September 5, 2024. Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced steep public spending cuts and targeted tax hikes for France's biggest companies and wealthiest individuals on Tuesday, saying there was no other way to narrow a gaping budget deficit. Tax increases would be targeted and temporary, he said, without giving further details. ING economist Charlotte de Montpellier said Barnier had been too light on detail to know if the timeline for cutting the deficit was credible and questioned whether the tax hikes would be temporary. "... the likelihood of these tax hikes becoming permanent is significant," de Montpellier said.
