Window Rock, Arizona AP —John Kinsel Sr., one of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers who transmitted messages during World War II based on the tribe’s native language, has died. With Kinsel’s death, only two Navajo Code Talkers are still alive: Former Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald and Thomas H. Begay. Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the Marines to serve as Code Talkers during the war, transmitting messages based on their then-unwritten native language. The Code Talkers sent thousands of messages without error on Japanese troop movements, battlefield tactics and other communications crucial to the war’s ultimate outcome. President Ronald Reagan established Navajo Code Talkers Day in 1982 and the August 14 holiday honors all the tribes associated with the war effort.

Having relinquished pole position immediately at the start of the race, Norris overtook Verstappen to take third in lap 52, but was adjudged to have gained an advantage by leaving the track. ROSWELL, N.M. — The New Mexico National Guard continued search and rescue operations Sunday in Roswell after record rainfall produced severe flooding in and around the city and Chaves County and left at least two people dead. Guard officials said 309 people had been rescued since Saturday, with 38 of those taken to hospitals for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Roswell city officials said water levels had receded in many parts of the city but remained high in the downtown area. Search and rescue efforts are underway in Roswell, N.M., on Sunday, following severe flooding. Authorities set up a shelter at the Eastern New Mexico state fairgrounds for Roswell residents displaced by the flooding.

But two new reports show travelers are now in a very different headspace. Trend reports from Expedia and Booking.com show vacationers are forgoing splashy trips to global hot spots in favor of quieter trips to places that are lesser-known — and far less crowded. Some 63% of travelers said they are likely to visit an off-the-beaten-track destination on their next trip, according to Expedia's "Unpack '25," a travel trend report which surveyed 25,000 respondents from 19 countries. CNN —Millions of Cubans remained without power for a third day in a row Sunday after fresh attempts to restore electricity failed overnightThe Cuban Electrical Union said about 16% of the country had had power restored when the aging energy grid again overloaded late Saturday. Cuba’s first island-wide blackout happened on Friday, when one of the country’s major power plants failed, according to the energy ministry. Hours after officials said power was being slowly restored, the country suffered a second nationwide blackout on Saturday morning. CNN —At least one person has died and hundreds have been rescued in Roswell, New Mexico, after extreme overnight rainfall brought severe flooding, stranding motorists and sweeping away cars. The New Mexico National Guard and other agencies have rescued at least 290 people, including 38 who were taken to hospitals, the agency confirmed in a statement. The National Weather Service declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and nearby areas, as emergency management within Chaves County reported numerous water rescues. “We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. HAVANA — The electricity went out Friday in Cuba, affecting the entire island's population of 10 million after one of its main power plants failed, according to Cuba’s energy ministry. But it wasn’t enough, and by 11 a.m. the largest power plant went offline, causing a grid failure. In some provinces outside the capital, Havana, many people have been facing power outages that last up to 12 hours at a time. Cuba’s ally and main oil supplier, Venezuela, has decreased the amount of shipments it sends to the island. Oil shipments from other countries, like Russia and Mexico, have also been greatly diminished.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to shutter and sell its large vehicle proving grounds in Arizona at the end of this year, CNBC has learned. The Arizona Proving Grounds covers 4,000 acres between Phoenix and Las Vegas in Yucca, Arizona. As of July 2019, the operations employed 69 people, including workers represented by a local chapter of the UAW, according to the automaker. Stellantis plans to use a proving grounds in Arizona owned by Toyota Motor beginning next year, according to two people familiar with the decision. Stellantis’ other major U.S. proving grounds facility is a 4,000-acre campus located west of Detroit in Chelsea, Michigan.

HONG KONG — China is strengthening enforcement with nations such as the United States to combat smuggling and other serious crimes, state media reported Friday, citing the country’s National Immigration Administration. Smugglers and cross-border criminal groups at home and abroad have recently been “deceiving some people to participate in smuggling activities,” the administration said, without giving a specific time period or clarifying whether the smuggling involved goods, people or both. The United States has this year deported Chinese people who sought to enter the country illegally back to China with charter flights. The difficulty of obtaining U.S. visas and the economic aftershocks of China’s Covid-19 lockdowns led to a sharp increase in Chinese nationals presenting at the U.S.-Mexico border. That is more than the 52,700 who crossed in the entire 2023 fiscal year that ended in October.

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. — In each of the last two summers, Laura Mae Williams, who recovers bodies for the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, has had to visit the U.S.-Mexico borderlands multiple times a week. The Medical Investigator’s Office, part of the University of New Mexico Health System, used to recover only a handful of bodies a year. First responders, elected officials and advocates in New Mexico attribute the spike in deaths largely to Texas Gov. Officials, including the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, also blame smugglers for the deaths, noting that in many cases they abandon people who fall behind — but only after they take their phones. “It raises an important question,” said Dr. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner at the Medical Investigator’s Office, whose office marks the deaths as accidental.
