But the actors' talks were tepid, with days off between sessions and no reports of progress. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IN THE ACTORS STRIKE? Their 42-day work stoppage began and ended all within the span of the much longer writers strike. Other segments of the actors union have gone on strike too, including several long standoffs over the TV commercials contract. That segment of the union could strike again soon if a new contract deal isn't reached.

Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: APPLE ORIGINAL FILMSThud, thud, thud, thud, thud, thud. Robbie Robertson ’s musical score backing “Killers of the Flower Moon” relies heavily on a low, endlessly repeated guitar or bass note that mirrors the soul-deadening events on screen. We’re in 1920s Osage territory in Oklahoma, where after an oil discovery the Native Americans are being systematically swindled, robbed and murdered by white people. Director Martin Scorsese repeats so many variations on this depressing mistreatment that experiencing the film is akin to being locked in a room with a pair of soulless sadists. Based on the book by David Grann , “Flower Moon” is a drudge and a dirge that runs longer than “Titanic,” nearly 3 1/2 hours.

MARTIN SCORSESE has been making the movies he calls pictures for practically his whole adult life. But 27 feature films and 16 documentaries later, he says each time is like starting over. “If I feel I’m just shooting the script—and it may be the greatest script ever made—I don’t know what I’m doing. Why am I there?” he says, as the light in a 20th-floor room in Manhattan gradually shifts on a recent afternoon. Know what I mean?”

It ended in frantic scenes of Afghans and Americans desperately trying to get on one of the last flights out of Kabul. Two-thirds of Americans say the war in Afghanistan was not worth fighting; 65% of Democrats and 63% of Republicans agree on that evaluation. The ATM was supposed to wipe out bank tellers. And yet, here we are in 2023, with unemployment in the US at 3.8%, and an estimated 9.6 million jobs available. Tech typically creates more jobs overallSimply put, technology creates more jobs than it takes away. For example, there were fears that the advent of ATMs would put bank tellers out of work. And sure enough, a few years after the adoption of the ATM, there were fewer bank tellers per branch.

Students nationally are holding people in power accountable, said Jackie Alexander, incoming president of the College Media Association and director of student media at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. By clinging to legacy admissions, colleges are not only undermining claims of advancing equality but may be shooting themselves in the financial foot. 'A weak and sad excuse'The legacy preference has always been a dance of public intentions and private subtext. While the rationales for preserving legacy admissions have evolved, the propensity to obfuscate them hasn't. Harvard's massive $50 billion endowment makes it pretty clear: the school doesn't need to keep legacy admissions anymore. When Wesleyan announced it was dropping legacy admissions Roth was adamant that it was the right move.

CNN —The German states of Bavaria and Hesse vote in regional elections on Sunday, in what is widely being seen as a test-case for Germany’s shifting political landscape. In Hesse – home to Frankfurt, Germany’s financial hub – dissatisfaction with Germany’s federal government threatens to deliver a blow to Scholz’s coalition. German flags are carried at an AfD election campaign event. Bavarian Premier Söder chose not to dismiss Aiwanger following the allegations, amid calls from across Germany’s political spectrum for the economy minister’s resignation. Sept 30 (Reuters) - Jorge Martin of Pramac Racing put on a masterclass to win Saturday's MotoGP sprint race at the Japanese Grand Prix after starting from pole position, piling the pressure on championship leader and reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia. Title challenger Martin grabbed his fifth sprint race win of the season hours after he clinched his second pole position of the campaign by setting a lap record of 1:43.198 seconds at the Mobility Resort Motegi. The 25-year-old Spaniard led from the first corner to the chequered flag and was joined by KTM's Brad Binder and Bagnaia of Ducati on the sprint podium. Martin has closed the gap with the 26-year-old Bagnaia by eight points in the championship ahead of Sunday's race. Frenchman Johann Zarco finished fifth ahead of VR46 Racing's Marco Bezzecchi, who won the inaugural Indian Grand Prix last week.

A shutdown would disrupt government services including the publication of major U.S. economic data such as keenly-watched employment and inflation reports that can move equity and bond markets globally. "If the government data releases are suspended, this will increase volatility and decrease visibility, in a time when forecasting is already difficult," said Clifton Hill, global macro portfolio manager, at Acadian Asset Management. Hill said that investors would have to make assumptions based on survey and non-government economic data that is available. Key government data releases due over the next two weeks include jobless claims, unemployment and inflation, which influence monetary policy. Peter Vassallo, a foreign exchange portfolio manager at BNP Asset Management said delays in economic data "is unfortunately just something that we have to deal with as it comes."

The CBI's September monthly retail sales survey - conducted between Aug. 25 and Sept. 13 - showed the headline balance rebound to a three-month high of -14 from August's more than two year low of -44. "There are some elements of optimism in our survey with retailers expecting the recent fall in sales to continue to ease," CBI Principal Economist Martin Sartorius said. Retailers' expected sales balance for October rose to a three-month high of -8. Britain's most recent official retail sales data showed a 0.8% month-on-month growth in sales volumes in August after a sharp 1.1% drop in July, when unusually wet weather upset normal summer spending patterns. The chief executive of supermarket Aldi UK said on Monday that cost of living concerns continued to influence food shopping habits.
