A Moscow court on Tuesday extended the pretrial detention of Evan Gershkovich, an American reporter for The Wall Street Journal who has been held in Russia for nearly eight months on an espionage charge that he, his newspaper and the U.S. government vehemently reject. Mr. Gershkovich, 32, has been held in the notoriously strict Lefortovo prison in Moscow since his arrest on March 29 during a reporting trip to the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in a Russian penal colony. Wearing jeans and a checkered shirt under a dark jacket, Mr. Gershkovich listened to the judge on Tuesday from a white courtroom cage, according to a video shared by the press service for Moscow courts. The ruling means that Mr. Gershkovich will remain in custody until Jan. 30; it was the third time his detention has been extended.

The trip was Mr. Netanyahu’s first to Gaza since the Israeli ground invasion began almost a month ago, according to officials. Photographs released by the Israeli government showed Mr. Netanyahu — wearing a T-shirt, jeans and a khaki flak jacket and helmet — looking at a map, consulting with commanders and standing just inside a tunnel that his office said the Israeli military had recently exposed. “We are making every effort to bring back our hostages and eventually we will return them all,” Mr. Netanyahu said. Israeli officials have said about 240 people were taken to Gaza as hostages by Hamas and its allies on Oct. 7 in an attack that also killed about 1,200 people. But the prime minister emphasized that rooting out Hamas remained a central objective for Israel.

The tool uses data on the climate, water and soil of a particular location to measure how viable the landscape will be for growing in the coming years. “The way we think about AI is it’s a time and effectiveness multiplier to the solutions for climate change,” Gupta told CNN. But for all of AI’s promise, the infrastructure that supports the technology — data centers filled with rows of powerful, energy-sucking computers — could itself be a strain on the environment. For now, the amount of energy used to power AI is relatively small compared to what’s consumed by transportation or buildings. Data center operators like Google are already thinking about how to reduce the resources needed to power the computing behind their AI models.

Abercrombie & Fitch on Tuesday blew past estimates as it posted a 20% jump in sales thanks to a strong back-to-school shopping season and growth at both its namesake brand and Hollister. For its fourth quarter, Abercrombie expects net sales growth to be up low double-digits compared to the prior year, which is in line with the 11.6% growth analysts had expected, according to LSEG. The expected uptick is driven by a higher gross profit rate, lower freight costs and higher sales prices. Abercrombie CEO Fran Horowitz told analysts the company has seen an "encouraging" start to the holiday shopping season. During the quarter, Abercrombie saw sales at its namesake brand grow by 30% to $548 million and revenue at Hollister grow by 11% to $509 million.

Teen clothing chains Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF.N) and PacSun are among the U.S. retail chains seeking to turn Americans' budding love affair with Formula One into sales of F1-inspired clothing lines, building partly on excitement for this weekend's inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, the retailers said. At the start of the year, the average ticket price for the three-day race weekend was $1,667 -- more than triple that for some European races, such as the Belgian Grand Prix. Rolex paid $35 million in 2023 for a deal that includes title naming rights at two Grand Prix, according to research firm GlobalData. Paulo Martinez, a Brazilian fashion icon who styled the show, pointed out that Brazilian cotton is "indispensable" in the manufacturing of the denim garments. More important than the race to come out on top is to show the industry and consumers the quality of Brazil's product, said the president of the Brazilian Cotton Producers Association (Abrapa), Alexandre Schenkel. For Schenkel, the runway showcased the fruits of designers' labor.

First-half profit jumped 75%, the dividend was reinstated as promised, and the company said shoppers were already snapping up its Christmas ranges. It now expects analysts' consensus forecast for annual profit to rise to 640 million pounds ($785 million) from 575 million pounds currently, versus 482 million pounds in 2022/23. M&S reported profit of 360.2 million pounds for the six months to Sept. 30, versus analysts' average forecast of 276 million. As flagged in May, M&S restored its dividend with a 1 pence interim payout, its first since 2019/20.
