Chevron Australia LNG workers to begin strikes on Friday
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Renju Jose | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Australia is the world's biggest LNG exporter, and the ongoing dispute over wages and conditions had stoked volatility in gas prices. "Despite the Offshore Alliance giving Chevron plenty of opportunity to sort out (bargaining agreements) ... they will finally be facing their day of reckoning," the union alliance said in a Facebook post. Work stoppages that could reach up to 11 hours will begin from 1 p.m. Perth time (0500 GMT) on Friday and last through Sept. 14. The strike action had been scheduled to begin on Thursday morning but was delayed due to mediation talks hosted by the Fair Work Commission, Australia's industrial umpire. When strike actions begin, the LNG plant will have to be shut down "if there are not competent personnel to undertake handovers during work stoppages," the union said.

Tight security measures have been prepared to contain possible protests by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, some of who stormed government buildings a week after Lula took office in January. During last year's bicentennial Independence Day, in the final stretch of a heated presidential campaign, Bolsonaro mixed military displays with a political rally drawing hundreds of thousands of supporters. In a weekly address on social media on Tuesday, Lula said he was returning the holiday's focus to the armed forces. Police, security and intelligence services have been mobilized to monitor for trouble by Bolsonaro supporters, but officials said they do not expect protests. HONG KONG (Reuters) - Torrential rain deluged Hong Kong on Friday leading to widespread flooding across the densely packed city, submerging streets, shopping malls and metro stations, as authorities shut schools and asked workers to stay at home. Hong Kong Observatory reported rainfall of 158.1 millimetres (6.2 inches) between 11 p.m. HKT on Thursday and midnight on Friday (1500 to 1600 GMT on Thursday). Hong Kong's stock exchange will not open on Friday morning if the black rainstorm warning is still in place at 9 a.m., the exchange said. Videos circulating on social media showed streets turning into raging rivers, while one clip showed water gushing down an escalator into a swamped subway station. Hong Kong's MTR Corp which operates the city's rail network said at least one line was shut while others were operating at delayed intervals.

(Reuters) - The Texas power grid operator said late on Wednesday it was resuming normal operations after lifting emergency measures, but still encouraged users to reduce power electric use. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which serves more than 26 million customers, had earlier declared an Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 (EEA 2), as operating reserves continued to drop. "No power outages associated with the ERCOT power grid were necessary," ERCOT said, adding that Texas had set a new September peak demand record of 82,705 Megawatts (MW). That was still below its all-time peak demand record of 85,435 MW hit on Aug. 10. Real-time power prices briefly hovered around $5,000 in most of ERCOT's Texas hubs, according to the ERCOT website.

SINGAPORE, Sept 5 (Reuters) - The dominating theme in crude oil markets is that there are too many competing narratives and driving factors to allow for anything approaching a clear view of the path ahead. So, what are the main issues clouding the crude oil market, both for the short and longer terms? - What will happen to Chinese oil demand? - Even if a soft landing can be achieved, interest rates may stay elevated for an extended period, which eventually flows through into crude trading. - How does the change in the main global price benchmark of Brent affect trading?

Chinese gatecrashers at US bases raise espionage concerns -WSJ

The Defense Department, FBI and other agencies held a review last year to try to limit these incidents that involved gatecrashers because of their attempts to get into U.S. military bases without proper authorization, the WSJ report said. The gatecrashers ranged from Chinese nationals found crossing into a U.S. missile range in New Mexico to scuba divers swimming in murky waters near a U.S. government rocket launch site in Florida, according to the report. The incidents that occurred in rural areas where there is little tourism typically involved Chinese nationals who were pressed into service and required to report back to the Chinese government, the report added, citing officials familiar with the practice. The U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the WSJ report. REUTERS/Melanie Burton/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 4 (Reuters) - Australian mining giant BHP (BHP.AX) said on Monday a Brazilian court had approved the reorganisation plan for its Samarco joint venture, clearing the path for the cash-strapped Brazilian miner to move ahead with a $3.7 billion debt restructuring. The reorganisation plan for Samarco, an iron ore miner that is 50% owned by BHP and 50% by Vale (VALE3.SA), allows for the Brazilian miner's existing financial debt to be exchanged for up to $3.7 billion of long-term unsecured debt, BHP said. "The new long-term debt will remain non-recourse to Samarco's shareholders, BHP Brasil and Vale," BHP said in a statement. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 86 cents, or 1.1%, to settle at $81.25 a barrel, and Brent crude futures rose 68 cents, or 0.8%, to settle at $84.80 a barrel. Those concerns, spurred on by output cuts from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, helped oil prices gain for seven straight weeks since June. Here are some charts illustrating what has changed, and what has not, in meme stocks. Data from JPMorgan illustrate how quickly sentiment can turn among individual investors, who have been among the key drivers of moves in meme stocks. Retail investors sold a net $852 million in single stocks in the past week. The Roundhill MEME ETF (MEME.P), which tracks the performance of a basket of meme stocks, is down about 55% from where it started trading in December 2021, though up about 38% for the year. A quick rise, often followed by a rapid descent, is a fate common to meme stocks of both the past and present.

US warns space companies about foreign spying

"We anticipate growing threats to this burgeoning sector of the U.S. economy," a U.S. counterintelligence official told Reuters, adding that "China and Russia are among the leading foreign intelligence threats to the U.S. space industry." The document warned companies to be on guard for facility visit requests, and attempts to gather confidential information at conferences. U.S. authorities have for years said Chinese hackers are targeting U.S. space know-how, including having accessed computers at the NASA Goddard Space Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as numerous companies involved in aviation, space and satellite technology. China says its space program is for peaceful purposes, but U.S. military officials say Beijing sees space as crucial to its military strategy. The U.S. warned this year that China seeks to match or surpass it as a leader in space by 2045.
