20 Years of Impossible Choices in ‘Saw’
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( Annie Aguiar | Joyce Ho | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +9 min
It can be hard to remember two decades later that the original “Saw” was less interested in gore than morality. In “Saw,” Cary Elwes’s character verbalizes the tension and appeal of the franchise: “He doesn’t want us to cut through our chains. “I’m going to try something else you haven’t seen before.”The classic tropes within “Saw” — serial killers, haunted detectives, creepy puppets — are mashed together and inverted around the undeniable binary of its core choice. In “Cube” (1997), an offbeat Canadian science fiction horror film, prisoners in a mysterious jail travel through rooms rigged with traps. Wan never directed another “Saw” movie, while Whannell contributed to “Saw II” and wrote the screenplay for “Saw III.”In the decades since “Saw” was released, Wan has directed tentpole franchise entries like “Aquaman” (2018) and “Furious 7” (2015).

The Miami Heat honored Dwyane Wade by unveiling a statue of the basketball legend outside the Kaseya Center in Miami, sealing his legacy with the team and making him the first Heat player with a statue outside the arena. In comments after the unveiling, Wade said he never expected this moment. “The Miami Heat should’ve had a contest where they showed this picture to 1,000 fans — and anyone who guesses it’s Dwyane Wade gets to keep the statue,” Jeff Darlington, a reporter for ESPN, joked on X. Wade is one of two players to have been on all three Miami Heat teams that won NBA championships, according to the NBA. At Sunday's unveiling, Wade was grateful, thanking fans for following his career and adding after the statue reveal, "I believe I gave you guys something set in stone to hold on to."

AdvertisementClimbing the corporate ladder was once the cornerstone of the American dream. Maybe that's why earlier this year, a young New Yorker struck a chord on TikTok when he vowed to "descend the corporate ladder." Eventually, he got promoted into a corporate office role, and that opened up even more opportunities for advancement. "That was a betrayal from a company I had been incredibly dedicated to," Zack told me. Besides, the dream of climbing the corporate ladder was probably never as great as it seemed to be.

CNN —Dwyane Wade’s status as a Miami Heat legend was further cemented on Sunday as the franchise unveiled an eight-foot statue of the three-time NBA champion. The 42-year-old played 16 seasons in the NBA and was selected as an All-Star 13 times before retiring in 2019. One comment on an Instagram video of the unveiling said that the statue better resembled Laurence Fishburne as ’Morpheus’ from the movie ‘The Matrix’ than Wade. Fans criticized the likeness of the statue although Wade himself didn't seem too bothered and was relishing the moment. The glass-half-full view is that price increases for single-family rental units are rather low, at least compared to the surges early in the pandemic. There's a similar dynamic going on in the single-family rental market, according to Rentometer.
