KCNA via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsSEOUL, Aug 31 (Reuters) - North Korea conducted a simulated "scorched-earth" nuclear strike on targets across South Korea, state media reported on Thursday, in reaction to allied exercises that it said amounted to plans for a preemptive nuclear attack by the United States. ROK is the initials of South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea. North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Wednesday, South Korea's military said, hours after the U.S. deployed B-1B bombers for allied air drills. South Korea's presidential office convened a security meeting after North Korea's late-night launch, which followed its second failed attempt last week to put its first spy satellite into orbit. Japan will intercept North Korea's missiles if they fly over Japan's territory, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said.

The two discussed President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's offer to mediate the conflict during a short meeting in the coastal city of El Alamein, an initiative Burhan said he welcomed, according to an Egyptian presidency statement. In brief comments from El Alamein, Burhan said he wanted to end the war, but did not mention the possibility of talks. "We ask the world to take an objective and correct view of this war. This war was started by a group that wanted to take over power, and in the process it has committed every crime that could come to mind," Burhan said. NORAD scrambled 2 fighter jets after an aircraft flew too close to President Joe Biden's vacation spot. The jets fired flares near the civilian pilot to get their attention. No information about the civilian aircraft or its pilot was released. AdvertisementAdvertisementF-16 intercepts of civilian aircraft that venture too close to where the president is are not uncommon. CNN —The US has approved Israel’s request to sell the Arrow-3 missile system to Germany, the Israeli defense ministry said Thursday, in what will become Israel’s largest ever defense deal. The approval paves the way for Israel and Germany to sign a landmark $3.5 billion defense agreement, according to the Israeli defense ministry. Israel will sell the Arrow-3 missile system to Germany, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles that can travel outside the atmosphere. Israel Ministry of Defense/Xinhua/Getty ImagesIsrael and the United States have been jointly developing the multi-billion-dollar Arrow missile defense system since 1986. Senior Israeli and German officials will sign a letter of commitment worth $600 million to enable immediate work on the project, the Israeli ministry spokesperson said.

REUTERS/Amir Cohen/FILE PHOTO Acquire Licensing RightsJERUSALEM, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The United States approved a $3.5 billion sale of Israel's Arrow-3 missile defence system to Germany on Thursday, clearing the way for delivery in 2025 and full operational deployment by 2030, Israeli officials said. The U.S. is a partner in the Arrow project, which was developed jointly by the Israel Missile Defence Organisation and the United States Missile Defense Agency. The Germany deal, which would be Israel's biggest ever defence sale, follows a European arms build-up in response to Russia's war in Ukraine. While Patriot and IRIS-T cover the medium layer of air defence, Arrow-3 - in whose production Boeing Co (BA.N) is also involved - offers protection for the higher layer. Israel's Army Radio said the signing ceremony with Germany on the Arrow-3 sale was expected to take place in November.

Armies around the world are testing high-energy laser weapons to intercept targets. If their claims are true, it would mean that China has leapfrogged ahead of the US in developing high-energy laser weapons that could be used on the battlefield. The capability China's military scientists claim to have developed, however, has not yet been seen in action. Laser beams can heat up gas in the air, which can reduce the quality of the beam and cause damage inside the laser chamber, according to the report. The Marines have tested a Compact Laser Weapons System in the range of 2 to 10 kilowatts, and the Air Force has received high-energy laser pods for its fighter jets.

LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Britain said its Typhoon fighter jets intercepted two Russian maritime patrol bomber aircraft in international airspace north of Scotland on Monday, within NATO's northern air policing area. Britain said its Typhoon jets are routinely scrambled during such incidents to secure and safeguard its skies. British pilots also recently led NATO's air policing mission in Estonia, where more than 50 similar air intercepts were carried out, it added. Earlier on Monday, Russia said its strategic bombers had carried out routine flights over international waters in the Arctic. German Patriot air defence system units are seen at the Vilnius airport, ahead of a NATO summit, in Vilnius, Lithuania July 10, 2023. REUTERS/Ints Kalnins/File PhotoBERLIN, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Germany has offered to extend the deployment of three Patriot air defence units in Poland until the end of 2023, the defence ministry in Berlin said on Tuesday. Ground-based air defence systems such as Raytheon's (RTX.N) Patriot are built to intercept incoming missiles. They are, however, in short supply across NATO since many allies scaled down the number of air defence units after the Cold War. Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent NATO allies scrambling to plug the gaps in their own inventories, while also supplying Kyiv with air defence systems to ward off Russian attacks.

A video from a 2019 Greta Thunberg interview shows the Swedish climate activist saying that bank bailouts are evidence that the world has enough money to address climate change. A clip shared out of context from this interview showing Thunberg saying, “if we can save the banks, then we can save the world,” has circulated online with the suggestion that her priorities had shifted from the planet to saving banks. “The only way to save the planet is to save the banks,” reads a Facebook post (here). “The money is there, if we can save the banks, then we can save the world… I mean, if there is something we are not lacking in this world, it’s money,” Thunberg said. The Storm Shadow cruise missile is the latest highly touted weapon employed by Ukraine. Some observers believe Storm Shadow will be crucial to Ukraine's counteroffensive. The missile's 155-mile range allows Ukrainian jets to launch it while staying out of range of Russian air defenses. A British Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 loaded with four Storm Shadow missiles during a test over the Atlantic Ocean. Storm Shadow missiles, while effective, have a "very similar capability with a very similar payload used very much against the targets that ATACMS would have been used against," Kofman said on the podcast.

The West has been sending Ukraine weapons and armed vehicles since the start of the war. Now, as Ukraine is in the midst of its counteroffensive to regain crucial territory from Russia, many of these weapons are proving useful. Insider spoke to three military experts about which of the Western-provided weapons have been the most effective for Ukraine in the war. Only time will tell how useful the weapons really areIt is still unclear how Ukraine's counteroffensive will unfold, and how long the Western weapons will hold until Ukraine will need more. A top Ukrainian general told the BBC on Thursday that because Russia has littered the frontlines in south Ukraine with multi-layered minefields, Western tanks are proving ineffective.

CNN —After decades of somewhat distant relations, Russia and Cuba are working closely together again — this time, as part of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. Cuba's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez, and Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, meet in Havana on April 20, in a show of deepening ties between the countries. In addition to deepened connections with Russia, Cuba has allowed China to build a secret espionage facility on the island. Washington will respond to Russian military escalation in Cuba with its own escalating force, as it already has done with the recent deployment of a nuclear submarine. Military escalation around Cuba is a dangerous temptation for Russia and a difficult trap for the US.

The U.S. has been working hard over the past year to engage with North Korea on denuclearization — but Pyongyang has shown no interest, said Victor Cha, senior vice president for Asia and Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "We can't simply assume that because the United States wants to talk, North Korea will come to the table," Cha told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Tuesday. The two countries have long been sparring over North Korea's nuclear threats and actions toward South Korea for years. Early Wednesday, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles eastward, hours after a U.S. nuclear-armed submarine docked in South Korea — the first in decades. It was North Korea's first long-range missile test since April, and was deemed to be triggered by alleged U.S. spy plane incursions.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema made a last-minute push in June to change training requirements for pilots. At the same time, she received over $100,000 from the airline industry over the last three months. But for the airline industry that's been pushing for that reduction, it was a sign that they had Sinema's ear. Political action committees and airline executives gave over $100,000 to Sinema's campaign from April to June, according to recently-filed documents with the Federal Election Commission. Altogether, the money accounts for over a tenth of contributions to Sinema's main campaign account over the last 3 months.

Russia is suffering from a shortage of counter-battery radars, the U.K.'s Ministry of Defence reported in its daily intelligence update on Twitter. Russian military forces in Ukraine rely heavily on counter-battery technology to intercept Ukrainian artillery fired at their positions. "Russia is suffering from a worsening shortage of counter-battery radars, especially its modern ZOOPARK-1M. Only a handful of the originally deployed ZOOPARK fleet are likely to remain operational in Ukraine," the MoD wrote in its post. CNN —A Russian surveillance aircraft flew above a US base in Syria for an “extended period of time” on Friday morning in what officials deemed an intelligence collecting mission, a senior defense official said. The official said there was a “lot of protest over the deconfliction line” established with Russia in Syria, which Russia brushed off. Despite the increased aggression from Russian aircraft, the official said there is no apparent willingness to get into an escalation with American forces, nor is there an American desire to engage Russian forces. There has, though, been a “qualitative difference” in Russian military flights in Syria and how they interact with US aircraft, the official said. The growing stability of the Syrian regime may also contribute to the willingness to interact with American aircraft.

North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile toward its eastern waters Wednesday, its neighbors said, two days after the North threatened "shocking" consequences to protest what it called a provocative U.S. reconnaissance activity near its territory. South Korea's military detected the long-range missile launch from the North's capital region around 10 a.m., the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It said South Korea's military bolstered its surveillance posture and maintained readiness in close coordination with the United States. North Korea's long-range missile program targets the mainland U.S. Some experts say North Korea still has some technologies to master to possess functioning nuclear-armed ICBMs.
