State laws targeting transgender people made trans and nonbinary young people more likely to attempt suicide in the past year, according to a first-of-its-kind study. The study compared suicide-related outcomes for trans and nonbinary young people in those 19 states to the outcomes for trans and nonbinary youth in states that did not enact any such laws. It found that these laws caused an increase in suicide attempts among trans and nonbinary youth by an estimated 7% to 72%. After time periods two and three, which were between December 2019 and December 2020, past-year suicide attempts increased by 72% and 52% for that same age range. She added that the researchers expected that type of misclassification to underestimate the percent increase in suicide attempts.

America's absurd war on 'organized retail crime'

Organized retail crime "is not shoplifting," the agency says on its website, "and these crimes are not victimless." AdvertisementOne homeless woman in jail who pleaded guilty to felony organized retail theft tells me she steals out of desperation. Gavin Newsom sent $267 million to cities across California to increase arrests of organized retail crime — and the crackdown has escalated dramatically. Even the guy who says he coined the term "organized retail crime" can't say how much is lost to it. Gavin Newsom has provided California cities with $267 million and signed 10 new bills into law to bolster the prosecution of organized retail crime.

A rate cut by the Federal Reserve this month has fueled hopes that the interest rate-sensitive housing market will soon experience a fresh jolt. “What this data tells us is that the housing market in 2024 has been really frozen,” said Chen Zhao, Redfin’s economic research lead. Zhao said a market where 30 to 40 of every 1,000 homes changed hands would signify a healthier housing landscape. “That very low inventory on the market was one of the primary drivers of there being so little turnover.”A shortage of new home construction also contributed to America’s sluggish housing market. “Getting to a healthy housing market is very hard from this point,” Zhao said.

Gavin Newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill on Sunday, a win for AI heavyweights like OpenAI and Big Tech companies that lobbied against it. The debate in California reflects the challenge governments face walking the fine line between allowing tech companies to innovate while protecting against new potential risks. Elon Musk, who founded AI company xAI last year, said last month that although it was "a tough call and will make some people upset," he thought "California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill." Several former OpenAI employees also supported the safety bill and said that OpenAI's opposition to the bill was disappointing.

California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.

No ballot will have a gun-related initiative led by voters this fall. Among the four proposed reforms, voters in Washington state wanted to ban assault weapon sales, while voters in California proposed requiring trigger locks on firearms and annual gun license renewals. Heyne said it is a sign that state and federal legislators are enacting gun laws, meaning voters no longer have to take matters into their own hands. In a landslide, voters in California greenlit proposals that strengthened gun laws. In May, the state passed a law preventing local governments from enforcing red-flag laws.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s attempt to appear on New York’s general election ballot. Kennedy, who has dropped his own presidential campaign and endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump, is fighting to appear on ballots in certain states over Democratic opposition. Kennedy’s lawyers said a state court was wrong in concluding that he could not appear on the ballot because of a dispute over his place of residence. Kennedy lives in California but had included a New York address as his residence when circulating a petition to appear on the ballot. After losing in state court, Kennedy filed an emergency application in federal court, but lost at both the district court and appeals court levels before turning to the Supreme Court.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

Turner says we can get a better understanding of how extreme heat is affecting us as it’s happening, which could create more immediate heat protocols to protect people at home, at schools and at work.
