State laws targeting transgender people made trans and nonbinary young people more likely to attempt suicide in the past year, according to a first-of-its-kind study. The study compared suicide-related outcomes for trans and nonbinary young people in those 19 states to the outcomes for trans and nonbinary youth in states that did not enact any such laws. It found that these laws caused an increase in suicide attempts among trans and nonbinary youth by an estimated 7% to 72%. After time periods two and three, which were between December 2019 and December 2020, past-year suicide attempts increased by 72% and 52% for that same age range. She added that the researchers expected that type of misclassification to underestimate the percent increase in suicide attempts.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

Heat is the leading cause of climate-related deaths in the country, but knowing how deadly it is? A study from Texas A&M, however, projects the actual number could be four times greater, with approximately 11,000 Americans dying from extreme heat last year. A new pilot program in California is in the works to create a revamped heat warning system. Turner says we can get a better understanding of how extreme heat is affecting us as it’s happening, which could create more immediate heat protocols to protect people at home, at schools and at work. Los Angeles, which has its own Heat Officer, and Los Angeles County are expected to soon release Heat Action Plans.

The U.S. Forest Service says it will not hire seasonal employees in the next fiscal year because of expected cuts to its budget, just as fire seasons grow longer, hotter and deadlier. “As an agency, we have a responsibility to plan for the most conservative funding picture, and these actions reflect that reality,” Forest Service spokesperson Scott Owen said in a statement.
