It comes after second-quarter gross domestic product for the euro zone came in at 0.3% on Tuesday, slightly higher than expected. In the U.S., the Federal Reserve is expected to keep interest rates steady on Thursday. The gist, vis-à-vis relationship status, was that in every category more women than men identify as Democrats, with the biggest gap existing among divorced Americans. According to Gallup, Cox writes, “A majority (54 percent) of divorced men identify as Republican compared to 41 percent of divorced women,” the largest gender gap among divorced people in two decades. As my colleague Thomas Edsall noted in May, in recent years there’s also a yawning gender gap among young voters, with young women becoming increasingly Democratic and young men becoming increasingly Republican. Edsall quoted the Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who cites Donald Trump’s “chaotic and divisive style” and lack of respect, among the reasons that young women have been fleeing the G.O.P. Young women, Lake said, “want stability and are very concerned about division and the potential for violence.”All this data was collected when Joe Biden was on course to be the Democratic presidential nominee.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed Wednesday that his 2024 Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, “happened to turn Black” a few years ago, saying that “all of a sudden, she made a turn” in her identity. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” the former president said. You have attacked Black journalists, calling them a ‘loser,’ saying the questions they ask are, quote, ‘stupid’ and ‘racist.’ You’ve had dinner with a White supremacist at your Mar-a-Lago resort. You’re voting for the president,” Trump said.

When you get an email or see a headline telling you there has been a data breach at a company you do business with, the natural instinct may be to roll your eyes and go about your day. "People might say, 'Oh, here's another one and stick it in the drawer and don't do anything,'" says Michael Bruemmer, head of global data breach resolution at Experian. Practice good online hygieneUnless you're somehow operating off the grid, the odds are very high that a good chunk of your information is floating around on the web, cybersecurity experts say. Should a bad actor get ahold of your email address and password during a data breach, for instance, things can spiral further out of control, Skoudis says. Javier Ghersi | Moment | Getty ImagesJapan's central bank kicks off its July monetary policy meeting on Tuesday, with traders focused on its decision on interest rate and government bond purchases. Economists polled by Reuters expect the BOJ to increase its benchmark interest rate to 0.1% from the current range of 0% to 0.1%. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said in June that the central bank could raise rates "depending on economic, price and financial data and information available at the time," Reuters reported. "Our decision on bond-buying taper and interest rate hikes are two different things," Ueda told the country's parliament. The headline inflation rate has been above the BOJ's 2% target for more than two years.

AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, are built by running complex algorithms on large amounts of data. Ackman delays his big betMonday isn’t going to be the day that Bill Ackman prices the I.P.O. of his Pershing Square USA investment vehicle, as had been planned. But the long-awaited fund, whose investors will probably include many who follow Ackman’s provocations on social media, is still coming, it says. The context: Pershing Square USA is a so-called closed-end fund that’s raising money to make the sort of concentrated investments that Ackman is now known for. The fund had faced big expectations after Ackman set an initial I.P.O.

"For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said at this year's Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Kennedy went further than Trump, promising to establish a 4 million bitcoin strategic reserve to match the country's current stake in gold, some of which is held near the military base at Fort Knox. But Trump's reservation speaks to the complications of promising a bitcoin strategic reserve on par with the gold standard. An executive order would not be enough to bring a U.S. bitcoin reserve into existence. That existing bitcoin stockpile could act as the foundation for the bitcoin strategic reserve, which the U.S. government would build on by regularly buying a certain number of bitcoin.

China's military is loyal and will faithfully execute the policies set down by the Communist Party. In June, Chinese Leader Xi Jinping reminded the Central Military Commission — the country's top political-military body — that the military reports to the Communist Party. "Xi stressed that political work is always the lifeline of the country's military. "Xi stresses PLA's political loyalty at crucial meeting held in old revolutionary base," read the Global Times headline. Beyond military corruption, Xi also is concerned about what he sees as decadence in Chinese society — especially among young people — which is undermining Chinese military power.

For years, China ramped up green energy production capacity, becoming the global leader in renewable energy manufacturing, from solar to wind to battery. In a second Trump administration, prices for imports from China are likely to surge for green energy producers. The view is that First Solar will benefit the most within the U.S. solar sector from greater trade restrictions, according to Baird. Ultimately, that may curtail the number of green energy startups and private companies that want to go public, Schleif said. "It's been really hard to compete with Chinese companies in any way, shape or form."

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, the first such meeting between the two men since Trump left the White House more than three years ago. Trump, who often claims he was the most pro-Israel president in modern history, once touted his close, personal relationship with Netanyahu. Netanyahu called Trump the greatest friend Israel has ever had and heralded him for “unequivocally” standing by Israel during Trump’s tenure as commander in chief. In posting that engagement with Abbas, Trump was trying to “strike a balance” going into the meeting, Bahbah said, adding that he hopes Trump will come out of the Netanyahu meeting calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. “At the table, the most important question is asking the prime minister what he needs to win.

CNN —Ex-FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page reached settlements with the Justice Department that will see the government paying out a total of $2 million in their lawsuits over the department’s 2018 release of their text messages. Former agent Strzok will get $1.2 million and Page, who was an FBI lawyer, will get $800,000, according to settlement agreements obtained by CNN. The Justice Department declined to comment on the matter. Page, who had also briefly served on Mueller’s team, resigned from her role as a lawyer for the FBI after the messages were discovered. About six hours before Celine Dion gutted out the final number of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, the streaming service Peacock emailed a promo for its coverage with the headline, “We’ll all be crying by the end of this.” So maybe they knew more than they were letting on. The homestretch of the marathon four-hour broadcast, when the celebrating athletes and dance extravaganzas and speeches were out of the way, had some starkly lovely images and moving moments: the speedboat carrying former champions up the Seine in the dark (like a real-life echo of Leos Carax’s great water-skiing scene in “Les Amants du Pont-Neuf”). The grand scale and dramatic lighting of the Louvre as the torch was carried, like a firefly’s flame, through its courtyards. The torch coming to the hand of a 100-year-old French cyclist, steady in his wheelchair, and Dion defying her illness to belt out “Hymne à l’Amour” on the Eiffel Tower.

Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Friday after Thursday's sell-off saw some indexes in the region hit their lowest level in months. "There's a changing of the guard happening on Wall Street. In Asia, traders assessed July inflation data out of Japan's capital city of Tokyo, which is widely considered a leading indicator of nationwide trends. Tokyo's headline inflation slowed slightly to 2.2% in July from 2.3% in May, while its core inflation rate — which strips out prices of fresh food — remained unchanged at 2.2%, in line with expectations. The so called "core-core" inflation rate, which strips out prices of fresh food and energy and is watched by the Bank of Japan, fell to 1.5% from 1.8%.
