Journal Editorial Report: Pushback emerges among donors and employers. Images: AP Composite: Mark KellyThe barbaric attack by Hamas against Israel—the intentional slaughter of defenseless civilians, including children and babies, and the taking of hostages—should have been a unifying moment for America. Shamefully, it has become something else: a wake-up call about a crisis in higher education. It has been painful to watch students at elite colleges implicitly or explicitly endorse Hamas’s attack. They aren’t old enough to remember 9/11, and it’s clear they never learned its lesson: Intentionally targeting civilians for slaughter is inexcusable no matter the political circumstances.

The account, Why I Wear My Star, featured posts containing people’s reasons for wearing Star of David jewelry and other Judaica. Ms. Adams and Ms. Gabbai, who are both Jewish, said they had largely stopped updating the account until recently. Ms. Gabbai, now 21 and a senior at Florida State University, said the Instagram account is not intended to be pro-Israel. Rachie Shnay, a jewelry designer in Manhattan, said she saw several people wearing star accessories at a rally for Israel held by Jewish groups in Washington on Tuesday. The Star of David, called Magen David in Hebrew, was used by Jews in Prague as early as the 1600s.

By now, you probably know a lot about George Santos, the congressman who scammed with abandon and made up almost everything. But the fact that he remains in Congress highlights something crucial about the people’s House. Even in that company, Mr. Santos stands out by exposing just how much craziness the Republican Party is willing to tolerate in pursuit of narrow partisan gains. The biographical lies and widely reported small-time hustles that boosted Mr. Santos pale in comparison with his penchant for “just throwing ideas.”I’m borrowing that phrase directly from Mr. Santos, who said it in a Spaces conversation on X, formerly Twitter, in October, shortly after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. “I don’t care if we go into a police state for a couple of months.”

The Israel-Hamas war has created a crisis of protest and confrontation on American campuses. At Cooper Union in New York, pro-Palestinian student demonstrators pounded on the door of a library as fearful Jewish classmates sheltered inside. A Cornell undergraduate used a campus website to post threats to attack the school’s center for Jewish life. Both Brandeis and Columbia have taken steps to penalize pro-Palestinian student groups for activity they argue violates university policies, prompting charges that they are selectively suppressing activism. As the conflict continues in the Middle East, college students are alternately emboldened and alarmed, faculty are at loggerheads, donors are irate, and college presidents are embattled.

Israel’s military said it was close to dismantling Hamas’s military system in the north of the Gaza Strip, as the enclave was plunged into a communications blackout when fuel ran out. As the war stretches to six weeks, the Israeli military said Friday “there remains work to be completed” in northern Gaza, but that it would target more areas in the strip. In the south of the enclave, where Israel had told people to go in October as it prepared to mount a ground offensive in the north, displaced families crowded in homes and shelters worried that the Israeli military would expand operations there.

TEL AVIV—Israeli forces have taken control of much of northern Gaza—at least the parts that are above ground. Beneath the strip’s devastated urban landscape, Hamas still reigns. The war is entering a new phase, as the Israeli military takes its fight underground and into Gaza’s legendary subterranean tunnel network.

CNN —Hamas has demanded that Israel stop flying surveillance drones over Gaza as part of its request that Israel pause its military operations in exchange for freeing hostages held by the terrorist group, according to two Israeli officials and a third source familiar with the ongoing negotiations. The Israeli military has been flying drones in the skies over Gaza for hours on end virtually every day during their military operation, using them as a primary means of surveillance to monitor the battlefield. The Pentagon has also been flying American surveillance drones over Gaza in its support of Israel’s efforts to find the hostages, which includes an estimated 10 Americans. The negotiating parties – Israel, Hamas and the US, with Qatar mediating between them – continue to grind away, as they try to reach an agreement on a number of sticking points. Other demands made by Hamas during the negotiations are more aid and fuel into Gaza, sources say, as well as allowing Palestinians who have fled south for safety to return to northern Gaza, where Israel now has control.

Should a few members of the Squad lose their primaries, the blow to Democratic unity could be severe. “And they’ll either stay at home or they’ll go to a third party.”Already, there are signs that the party is fracturing over Israel. Advocates for the freedom and safety of Palestinians, horror-struck by more than 10,000 civilian deaths in Gaza, believe that the Democratic Party is giving its approval to atrocities. These big-footed donors, who are overwhelmingly targeting representatives of color, are going to exacerbate the fissures in the Democratic Party. Israeli soldiers from the 7th Brigade escorted journalists to see a stone and concrete shaft, on the grounds of the Al-Shifa hospital, in Gaza City on Thursday. But Col. Elad Tsury, commander of Israel’s Seventh Brigade, said Israeli forces, fearing booby traps, had not ventured down the shaft at the hospital, Al-Shifa. CNN cannot independently verify the claim by Israel that the image is of a Hamas tunnel. The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Israel to grant independent investigators access to Gaza to probe the competing claims. “This is precisely where you need an independent international investigation, because we have different narratives,” said Türk on Thursday. Why Ending the Occupation and Peace with Israel is Still the Palestinian National Goal.” The views expressed in this commentary are his own. Hamas’ unwavering commitment to armed struggle and violence allowed the Israeli right to paint the entire Palestinian national movement as hopelessly extreme. He reportedly said that this was part of Israel’s strategy — to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank. But the old, infirm and chain-smoking politician, who at least has time and again proven his unwavering rejection of violence as a Palestinian national strategy, represents exactly this trend among Palestinians. The Biden administration appears to understand the challenge in theory, but how much they can or will do to implement such a revised policy towards the Palestinian political scene is uncertain at best.

By placing military targets in and under civilian structures, it is Hamas that violates laws of war. Mr. Bartov is mute about Israel’s hundreds of phone calls to Gazans warning them to leave buildings in which Hamas fighters were located. To the Editor:In an urgent effort to prevent genocide, Omer Bartov writes about the horrific carnage committed by Israel in Gaza. But to live and die in a world that makes distinctions between crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide, proportionality, etc., you can lose sight how all of it is utter madness. The Israeli military released footage of a tunnel opening from within the largest hospital in Gaza on Thursday, the first evidence to support its claims that Hamas’s vast tunnel network runs underneath the medical facility. With pressure mounting on Israel to show proof to justify sending troops into the Al-Shifa Hospital, Israel said it was still in the process of combing through the complex. Hamas has denied the claims that it has used the medical facility as a command center and has requested that the hospital be reviewed by international organizations.

Many residents of northern Gaza used four-hour long humanitarian pauses to flee the area toward the south of the strip. The resolution passed with twelve votes, with the remaining three members — the United States, Britain and Russia — abstaining. The majority of Security Council member states, voted for a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire on Oct 26. But she said the United States supported many of the resolution’s provisions such as the release of hostages and humanitarian pauses. “Humanitarian pauses cannot be a replacement for a cease-fire or even a truce,” Russia’s ambassador to the U.N., Vasily Nebenzya, said.

But since these provisions are considered a norm of customary international law, they are nonetheless binding on all states. Is there evidence of war crimes in the fighting between Hamas and Israel? The report said Israel may be committing the war crime of collective punishment, after officials ordered the “complete siege” of Gaza. However, ethnic cleansing still lacks a precise legal definition, and it is not recognized as an independent crime under international law. The ICC is an international court established to investigate individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes, such as war crimes.

The Israeli military said it is conducting a raid inside Gaza’s biggest hospital Al-Shifa as it targets Hamas militants it claims are operating beneath the structure — which the militant group and hospital officials deny. The United States on Tuesday cited intelligence suggesting Hamas has a command node under the hospital, seeming to back Israel’s assertion. What’s happening on the ground: Khaled Abu Samra, a doctor at the hospital, told CNN they were given 30 minutes’ warning before the Israeli operation on the complex began. Khader Al Za’anoun, a journalist inside the hospital, told CNN that Israeli tanks had moved into the hospital complex, and there were gunfire exchanges across the yard. It’s unclear whether there are IDF soldiers inside the hospital buildings, Al Za’anoun said.

Israel released footage from Gaza’s largest hospital on Wednesday that it said proved the site was being used by Hamas militants, after searching buildings in an operation that carries high stakes for both sides of the war. The footage showed the MRI wing of the sprawling Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where Israel said it found AK-47s, grenades, military uniforms and a battle vest with the insignia of Hamas’s military wing. In a video, an Israeli military spokesman pointed to a laptop, a hand-held tactical radio and a set of discs as evidence of a Hamas command center in the hospital, although the laptop screen was blurred and he didn’t specify what was found on it.

The Israeli military said its forces carried out a targeted operation inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital. Israel and the U.S. allege Hamas hides a key command center under the hospital, a claim which Hamas denies. Photo: Ahmed El Mokhallalati/ReutersWASHINGTON—The U.S. assessment this week that Hamas and other Palestinian militants were operating within Gaza’s largest hospital complex was based in part on intercepted communications of fighters inside the compound, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday. The signals intelligence, which was picked up in recent weeks, was among several pieces of U.S.-gathered information, the people said. And it was among the information that led the White House and Pentagon to announce Tuesday for the first time that the U.S. believed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, also known as PIJ, were using Al-Shifa Hospital “as a way to conceal and support their military operations and hold hostages.”

CNN —Israeli forces launched a raid Wednesday on Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, after accusing Hamas of operating from tunnels beneath the vast complex – a claim denied by the militant group and hospital officials. A satellite image shows Al-Shifa hospital, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in Gaza on November 7. Thousands of civilians are sheltering at the hospital, along with gravely ill patients and premature infants whose care has been interrupted. Fuel and medical supplies have dwindled as Israeli troops drew nearer in recent days. Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, has denied that was the case, and hospital officials have also refuted the allegation. There was no immediate information on the scope, scale or timeline of Israel’s operation inside the hospital. The Israeli military said that the goal of the raid Wednesday was not to harm civilians and that their troops were accompanied by medical teams and Arabic speakers.

Last week, I gave a lecture at the University of California at San Diego about politics and social justice. Afterward, as I was signing books, a young Black woman approached my table and whispered a question, asking me what I thought about the horrors playing out in Gaza. Almost all of them described themselves as anti-Zionist, but in our conversations, all of them also condemned antisemitism. When I talked to the pro-Palestinian activists and scholars, I posed a simple question that is often asked: Do you believe that Israel has a right to exist? When I told Greenblatt that none of my interviewees gave a direct “yes” to the right-to-exist question, he said that was “almost indescribably offensive” because he connects any hesitation on the question to historical antisemitism and a denial of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination.

Since Israel’s ground troops invaded Gaza 19 days ago, the fate of its war has become largely entwined with the fate of the territory’s largest hospital. Israeli soldiers on Wednesday morning stormed that hospital, Al-Shifa, searching its corridors and rooms for evidence to support Israel’s assertion that the sprawling medical complex doubles as a secret military command center. Over the course of the day, they hunted for weapons and interrogated those they found inside, according to both Israeli officials and Palestinians at the hospital. Israel says Al-Shifa, a sprawling complex in Gaza City, conceals an underground military base and has presented its capture as a key metric of Israeli success. The Israelis also say that Hamas’s use of the hospital highlights how the group defends itself with human shields.

President Biden said on Wednesday that the endpoint of the Israel-Hamas conflict has to be a Palestinian state that is “real,” existing alongside an Israeli one. Mr. Biden and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken have been publicly emphasizing the need for a two-state solution in recent days. The last major push along those lines came from John Kerry when he was secretary of state in the Obama administration. Mr. Biden said he did not have a specific idea of when to tell Israel it should halt its war in Gaza. Israeli officials have said Hamas has at least 100 women and children and should release them all, the official said.
