The FBI claims North Korea-linked hackers were behind a $100 million crypto heist on the so-called Horizon bridge in 2022. North Korea-linked hackers attacked a record number of crypto platforms in 2023, according to Chainalysis in its latest report on Wednesday. Data collected from 2016 to 2023 showed that North Korea hacked 20 crypto platforms last year — the highest level recorded in that time period, according to the blockchain analytics firm. North Korea-affiliated hackers stole slightly over $1 billion worth of crypto assets last year, which was lower than the record $1.7 billion stolen by North Korea-affiliated hackers in 2022. Another report by blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs said hackers tied to North Korea stole at least $600 million in crypto in 2023.

While its cybersecurity business pulls in about $20 billion in annual sales, Microsoft's revenue jumped 7% in 2023 to nearly $212 billion. The Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) new disclosure rules around cybersecurity attacks could be another catalyst for Palo Alto, Jim added.

In a Monday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz discussed Microsoft 's high-profile security breach by a Russian intelligence group, saying these adversaries have a determined "low and slow" approach to hacking that's especially tough to beat. Thought to be part of the Russian foreign intelligence service SVR, Nobelium is also known as Midnight Blizzard and Cozy Bear. Nobelium has tried to breach the systems of U.S. allies as well as the Department of Defense. He said CrowdStrike uses its algorithms to string together these "low signals" and identify such adversaries. Kurtz added that CrowdStrike has been able to stop the group in the past, saying that some of Microsoft's customers seek additional support from his company.

Luis Alvarez | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesWhile rent payments do not traditionally affect your credit, a growing number of so-called rent-reporting services are trying to change that. But these services don't all operate the same way, and some may have less value for renters. There are also services geared to landlords that offer rent reporting for tenants, including ClearNow, Esusu and PayYourRent. Landlords usually shoulder the cost of these programs, but there may be processing fees depending on how you make your rent payments. When rent payments are included in credit reports, consumers see an average increase of nearly 60 points to their credit score, according to a 2021 TransUnion report.

Prince Harry dropped his libel lawsuit Friday against the publisher of the Daily Mail tabloid following a ruling in which a judge cast doubt on his case as it was headed to trial. The action will leave him on the hook to pay the publisher's legal fees, which the Daily Mail reported to be 250,000 pounds ($316,000). The publisher argued the article expressed an honest opinion and caused no serious harm to his reputation. In March, Harry sought summary judgment — to win the case without going to trial — and tried to knock out the Mail's defense but a judge didn't buy it. He claims that hostility toward him and his wife on social media and relentless hounding by the news media threaten their safety.

It said the same highly skilled Russian hacking team behind the SolarWinds breach was responsible. “A very small percentage” of Microsoft corporate accounts were accessed, the company said, and some emails and attached documents were stolen. A company spokesperson said Microsoft had no immediate comment on which or how many members of its senior leadership had their email accounts breached. In a regulatory filing Friday, Microsoft said it was able to remove the hackers' access from the compromised accounts on or about Jan. 13. After gaining a foothold, they used the account's permissions to access the accounts of the senior leadership team and others.

The veteran actresses Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht, reprising their stage roles, portray Diana and Alice, two women looking back at an unlikely friendship formed over one summer decades past. Alice, in turn, initially judges Diana to be “uptight,” but she grudgingly revises her opinion when Diana accepts her offer of weed on their daughters’ play date.

Microsoft said in a Friday regulatory filing that a Russian intelligence group accessed some of the software maker's top executives' email accounts. Microsoft and the U.S. government consider Nobelium to be a part of the Russian foreign intelligence service SVR. The hacking group was responsible for one of the most prolific breaches in U.S. history, when it breached government supplier SolarWinds in 2020. It was also implicated alongside another Russian hacking group in the 2016 breach of the Democratic National Committee's systems.

A false statement saying the regulator had approved a bitcoin ETF was published Tuesday on the SEC's social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter. CNBC runs through everything you need to know about the bitcoin ETF milestone. As crypto investors look to assess what the market impact of a bitcoin ETF might be, many are comparing Wednesday's news to the greenlighting of the SPDR Gold Shares ETF — the first-ever spot gold ETF — in 2004. A bitcoin ETF opens up the audience of people and institutions that can buy and sell bitcoin to those with little experience trading cryptocurrency. "There is now a U.S. bitcoin spot ETF, and bitcoin is no longer considered shady or infamous.
