Donald Trump's lawyers went after accountant Donald Bender in court on Thursday. Donald Trump's lawyers tried to put the mental health of his former accountant Donald Bender on trial Thursday as part of an effort to undermine the New York attorney general's fraud lawsuit against them. And one of Trump's lawyers, Jesus Suarez, zoomed in on a disclaimer in a document that Mazars had given to authorities. But Cliff Robert, an attorney for Donald Trump's sons Eric and Donald Jr., challenged Bender's recollection of his interactions with Jeff McConney, a longtime Trump Organization accountant. Bender is no stranger to the witness stand, having previously testified at the criminal trial of the Trump Organization in 2022.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) edged slightly higher Wednesday after Oppenheimer shared a positive outlook for the food operator's stock — a call CNBC's Jim Cramer agrees with. But that's still more than 20% higher than Tuesday's close. If you like this story, sign up for Jim Cramer's Top 10 Morning Thoughts on the Market email newsletter for free. Chipotle has solid fundamentals, Cramer said, citing the pros of the company owning its restaurants directly rather than franchising them out like competitor McDonald's (MCD). Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio used by the CNBC Investing Club, does not own Chipotle shares, but it does hold a position in Starbucks (SBUX).

NEW YORK, Oct 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - All eyes are on Sam Bankman-Fried as the cryptocurrency founder’s criminal trial gets underway this week. The high-profile case bears similarities to past scandals such as Enron and Countrywide Financial, when regulation followed investigations. Lawmakers hauled Wall Street analysts up to Capitol Hill to grill them about their “buy” ratings. Importantly, legislators passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, forcing banks to hold more capital, among other stipulations. It also is less prevalent – less than 20% of Americans have invested in crypto, according to the Pew Research Center.

After a months-long public campaign that began shortly after Mayor Brandon Johnson (right) took office in May, advocates reached a deal with restaurant industry lobbyists to phase out the tipped-minimum wage over five years. "The closest pending victory is in Chicago," said Saru Jayaraman, founder and president of the advocacy group One Fair Wage. Three-fourths said they would reduce the number of tipped workers on their payroll, and nearly half said the cuts would be significant. The $9.48 an hour wage most workers got cost the restaurant $5,449.61, he said, a fraction of the $17,198 in tips workers earned. That's one reason why the restaurant industry engaged in a kind of bidding war against itself, to find a compromise solution that politicians like Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Johnson's floor manager in the City Council, would buy.

CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland forcefully rebuked congressional Republicans who have accused the Justice Department of political bias as he opened a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington on Wednesday. Even with the face-saving indictment last week of Hunter Biden, everyone knows the fix is in,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan said in his opening statement. The House Judiciary Committee has also been probing allegations from an IRS whistleblower that the Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden was politically tainted. “House Republicans will use their time today to talk about long-discredited conspiracy theories and Hunter Biden’s laptop. Several House Republicans – including McCarthy – have floated an impeachment of the attorney general, although those calls have quieted down as House Republicans have turned their impeachment lens on President Joe Biden himself.

When David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, asked for special counsel status, the Justice Department says Mr. Garland approved his request quickly. A widely respected federal judge before becoming attorney general, Mr. Garland has become a favorite target of House Republicans after the Justice Department launched investigations that resulted in felony charges against former President Donald J. Trump. At the heart of the issue are assurances Mr. Weiss and Mr. Garland have given to lawmakers that Mr. Weiss had ultimate authority over the Hunter Biden case and when and where to bring charges. But they have vouched generally for the statements about Mr. Weiss’ limited authority, describing a more nuanced scenario in which Mr. Weiss had sought to partner with prosecutors in Washington, D.C., and California, only to be rebuffed, causing him to try a different approach. When Mr. Weiss eventually asked for special counsel status, the Justice Department says Mr. Garland approved his request quickly.

The council will include four representatives from the fast-food industry, four from the workers' side and one neutral party who will serve as chair. REUTERS/Phil Noble/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMELBOURNE, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Ionic Rare Earths (IXR.AX) said on Tuesday it has received UK government investment to build a commercial rare earth magnet recycling facility in Belfast that will supply Ford's (F.N) electric vehicle production facilities in the country. The UK government will support the partnership with an investment of £2 million ($2.50 million) as part of its push to support circular economy magnet rare earths, as the West diversifies supply chains away from China which produces almost all the world's magnet supply. Rare earths are the most magnetic of all metals, used in applications from wind farms to EVs to defence. To support production at this facility there will be a requirement for over 600 tonnes of magnet raw material per annum, it said in the release.
