MUNICH, Germany — A night at the opera conjures images of elegant outfits and spectacular vocals. But at one German opera house, 18 audience members required medical treatment after watching recent performances featuring explicit lesbian sex scenes, piercing, and lots of blood. The opera, Sancta, premiered at the Mecklenburg state theatre in Schwerin in May. It was based on the controversial 1920s opera Sancta Susanna, whose story follows a nun facing her repressed desires. The new version of Sancta, directed by Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger, shows naked nuns roller-skating on a half-pipe and a wall of crucified unclothed bodies.

A German national who was under home detention in New York City on a $5 million bond guaranteed by his domestic partner and children in a case in which he was charged with overseeing a $150 million cryptocurrency fraud is now a fugitive. After noticing that Jicha's ankle bracelet was not working, Pretrial Services officials sent him an email directing him to visit their office the next day. Jicha did not show up, the prosecutor told U.S. District Court Judge Orelia Merchant. Only then did Pretrial Services inform prosecutors that Jicha's ankle bracelet had ceased working, 26 hours after becoming aware of that fact, the prosecutor told the judge. CNBC has requested comment from Pretrial Services in Brooklyn federal court.

The Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, founded by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, will back the campaign called “Timeout Against Hate.” Kraft met with the commissioners of the aforementioned sports leagues earlier this year to discuss a potential campaign, and they are committing $50 million to spread the message. “Why in sports do you take a timeout?,” Kraft told NBC News. Last year, Kraft met with more than 80 sports figures to discuss how sports could be used to combat hate in America. The commissioners ultimately gathered in the NFL’s “main conference room,” per Kraft.

OpenAI is increasingly becoming a platform of choice for cyber actors looking to influence democratic elections across the globe. The threats ranged from AI-generated website articles to social media posts by fake accounts. The social media content related mostly to elections in the U.S. and Rwanda, and to a lesser extent, elections in India and the EU, OpenAI said. And in May, an Israeli company used ChatGPT to generate social media comments about elections in India. The company said that while most social media posts it identified received few likes or shares, some real people did reply to the AI-generated posts.

President Joe Biden has postponed his overseas trip this week due to Hurricane Milton, according to two sources familiar with the planning. Biden was scheduled to depart for Berlin on Thursday and then travel to Angola in Southern Africa, returning to the U.S. on Oct. 15. "Given the projected trajectory and strength of Hurricane Milton, President Biden is postponing his upcoming trip to Germany and Angola in order to oversee preparations for and the response to Hurricane Milton, in addition to the ongoing response to the impacts of Hurricane Helene across the Southeast," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. Residents there are still reeling from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene last month. Criswell will be in Florida providing guidance and coordinating disaster response to Milton, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday.

BRUNSWICK, Germany — A suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann was acquitted of unrelated sexual abuse charges by a court in the German city of Brunswick on Tuesday. Christian Brueckner has been formally identified as a suspect in the case of “Maddie” McCann, who disappeared from her bedroom in 2007 during a family holiday in Portugal. In the trial in Brunswick, which started in February, Brueckner faced three charges of aggravated rape and two of sexual abuse of children committed between 2000 and 2017. The disappearance sparked a media frenzy in Britain and Portugal as the McCanns sought publicity to help find their daughter. German police said in June 2020 that McCann was assumed dead and that Brueckner, in his 40s, was likely responsible for it, but they have never brought charges against him.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden will no longer travel abroad this week as a major hurricane speeds toward Florida. The statement comes ahead of Biden’s expected remarks this morning on Hurricane Milton’s anticipated impact and ongoing recovery efforts for Helene. There have not yet been any discussions in earnest about when the postponed trip would be rescheduled, another White House official said. The White House had appeared aware of the optics of the president potentially being abroad after a catastrophic storm. “He’s gotten updates about the hurricane and (is) obviously continuing to get updates on what is happening on the ground as after the horrible hurricane, Hurricane Helene, and so that will continue.”There is little time remaining in his presidency to reschedule.
