The newest U.S. aircraft carrier - and the world's largest - is already in the eastern Mediterranean and set to be joined by a second U.S. aircraft carrier in the next 10 days. While the White House says there are "no plans or intentions" for their use, it means U.S. military assets would be in place to provide air support to protect U.S. national security interests if needed. The U.S. also has an array of bases in the Middle East with troops, fighter aircraft and warships. "That said, we take our national security interests seriously and we have ample military force in the region to protect and defend those interests as needed," Kirby added. Any decision to launch military action in the Middle East would come from U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democract, himself.

Footage released by the IDF showed members of the navy's "Snapir" unit fighting off Hamas militants. The IDF said militants "were swimming toward the shoreline in an attempt to infiltrate Israel by sea." The Palestinian militant group Hamas' sea attack came as part of a wider wave of surprise attacks by land, sea, and air on October 7. The footage appears to show Israeli troops shooting and throwing grenades or depth charges from Defender-class boats at Hamas fighters. The insurgents on-board were thrown into the Mediterranean Sea and then attempted to swim toward the coast, the IDF said.

REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Oct 14 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered 7,000 soldiers to be mobilised for increased security patrols, his office said on Saturday, a day after a teacher was stabbed to death in an Islamist attack. France was put on its highest security alert on Friday after a 20-year-old man fatally stabbed a teacher and gravely wounded two other people in an attack at a school in the city of Arras in northern France. The security alert comes as France hosts the Rugby World Cup and prepares to face South Africa on Saturday evening in their quarter-final. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Friday the Arras attack bore a link to events in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military offensive to root out Hamas fighters after their deadly rampage into Israel last Saturday.

The Eisenhower, accompanied by aircraft, a guided-missile cruiser and two guided-missile destroyers, will join the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group, which arrived in the region earlier this week, Austin said in a statement. The deployments are meant to dissuade others, particularly Lebanon-based Hezbollah, from joining the conflict, officials have said.

ARRAS, France (AP) — France will mobilize up to 7,000 soldiers to increase security around the country after a teacher was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student suspected of Islamic radicalization, the president’s office said Saturday. Counterterrorism authorities are investigating the stabbing, and the suspected assailant and several others are in custody, prosecutors said. The suspect is a Chechen who had attended the school and had been under recent surveillance by intelligence services for radicalization. The “Attack Emergency” threat posture allows the government to temporarily mobilize the military to protect public places among other measures. For many in France, the attack echoed the killing of another teacher, Samuel Paty, almost exactly three years ago near his Paris area school.

Biden said this week he will ask Congress to send Israel additional aid in the wake of Hamas' terror attacks. Between 2001 and 2020, Israel received more military aid from the US than all other nations combined. Despite concerns that Israel will continue killing civilians and children in Gaza, there is bipartisan support for aid to Israel. In 2016, the US signed its third 10-year Memorandum of Understanding on military aid to Israel, pledging to send it $38 billion between 2019 and 2028. In 2022, the US spent a total of $4.8 billion on military, economic, and missile defense aid for Israel.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in Israel on Friday for meetings with senior government leaders and to see firsthand some of the U.S. weapons and security assistance that Washington rapidly delivered to Israel in the first week of its war with the militant Hamas group. Austin is the second high-level U.S. official sent by President Joe Biden to visit Israel in two days. His quick trip from Brussels, where he was attending a NATO defense ministers meeting, came a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the region. Gaza's Hamas rulers responded by calling on Palestinians to “remain steadfast in your homes and to stand firm" against Israel. Within hours after the brutal Hamas attack across the border into Israel, the U.S. moved warships and aircraft to the region.

Israel's invasion of Gaza could turn the war into a regional conflict, experts said. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael's invasion of Gaza could escalate the war into a full-blown regional conflict, military analysts said. AdvertisementAdvertisementOn Sunday, Israel declared a state of war and a day later announced a "complete siege" of Gaza . Buckner pointed to signs of escalations across Israel's borders that could tilt a possible Israeli-Hamas war into a regional conflict. Israel's incursion into Gaza could create a "domino effect" that triggers all its neighbors in the region to join the conflict, Buckner said.

REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Oct 12 (Reuters) - President Emmanuel Macron will meet political party leaders on Thursday and address the nation on TV to call for unity and try to prevent any spillover of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in France, where there has been a rise in antisemitic acts. France has Europe's largest Muslim and Jewish populations and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has in the past contributed to tensions between the two. Antisemitic acts have risen in France since Hamas attacked Israeli towns on Saturday, killing more than 1,300 people, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. Israel has responded by launching the most powerful bombing campaign on Gaza, ruled by Hamas, in the 75-year history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, killing more than 1,200 and destroying whole neighbourhoods. Darmanin said France had seen a spike in online hatred but also more direct threats.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean amid a growing crisis in Israel. Carrier strike groups host significant airpower and firepower, and the Ford's new technological capabilities make it a major presence. US officials announced the movement of the carrier strike group toward Israel on Sunday, the day after Hamas carried out deadly terror attacks against the US ally. The amount of firepower each vessel brings adds up, especially considering the capabilities of the air wing aboard USS Gerald R. Ford. It set out on a short maiden deployment last year and its first full deployment as part of a fully certified carrier strike group earlier this year.

Macron's interior minister had earlier banned pro-Palestinian protests, saying they were "likely to generate disturbances to public order". "This event is an earthquake for Israel, the Middle East and beyond," Macron said in a solemn TV address. BANNED RALLYDespite the ban, several hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in central Paris in separate groups that police forces sought to keep from merging. Macron has previously condemned the deadly attack by the Palestinian militant Hamas group and voiced solidarity with Israel. Two pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Paris had already been banned on Thursday for fear of outbursts when interior minister Gerald Darmanin told prefects to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the country.
