CNBC's Jim Cramer knows that executives rarely sound the alarm when something is wrong at their company. Cramer broke down the companies he's watching into categories: Continually good quarter (or continued excellence), first good quarter, last bad quarter, first bad quarter and confusing quarter. Cramer first listed companies that are experiencing "continually good quarters," including homebuilder PulteGroup and paint maker Sherwin-Williams . Cramer said he thinks the company is having its "last bad quarter," which could present a buying opportunity. Cramer pointed to aerospace giant RTX , formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, as a company likely experiencing a "first bad quarter," plagued by an engine recall.

The S & P 500 is up 2.3% this month, but the market really is broadening out , and former market leaders (tech and consumer discretionary) are lagging. You might be surprised to discover that about 60 of the 100 companies in the Nasdaq 100 are not technology companies. The Nasdaq 100 includes Airbnb, Marriott, Costco, GE Healthcare, Ross Stores, and Honeywell. First Trust Nasdaq-100 Ex-Technology ( QQXT ) tracks an equal-weighted index of Nasdaq 100 stocks that excludes technology companies. The ProShares S & P Ex-Technology ETF ( SPXT ) tracks a market-cap-weighted index of U.S. large-cap stocks, excluding firms in the technology sector.

The IPO market had been in the doldrums since February 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. It was a small but positive sign for the many tech deals waiting for a better IPO market." Some signs are emerging that the IPO market is starting to thaw out. Ultimately, that's what we need for the IPO market to heat back up," said Daniels.

Investors looking for some outperformance may want to check out stocks that are spun off from their parent companies, according to Morgan Stanley. Two years after completion, spinoffs outperformed the market by an average of 10.2%, the investment bank found. Parent companies, on the other hand, underperformed by 8%. "Spinoffs present investors with a unique opportunity to capitalize on unlocked and potentially underappreciated value," analyst Todd Castagno wrote in a note Monday. One of the biggest spinoffs in the past year was GE Healthcare Technologies , which split from General Electric in December.

UnitedHealth Group' s stock price jumped Friday after the health-care conglomerate reported second-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped Wall Street's expectations despite rising medical costs. UnitedHealth Group is the biggest health-care company in the U.S. by market cap and revenue, and is even bigger than the nation's largest banks. Given its size, UnitedHealth Group is considered a bellwether for the broader health insurance sector. UnitedHealth Care said that was driven by the previously noted uptick in elective surgeries and outpatient care activity, primarily among seniors. But UnitedHealth Group executives indicated that the trend may be reversing.

In April, alongside its first-quarter results, J & J raised its full-year sales guidance by about $1 billion and its earnings-per-share outlook by 15 cents. Clearing this overhang would help reduce the discount at which J & J shares to pharmaceutical peers, the firm said. The Club's take: JPMorgan's thinking on J & J aligns quite closely with our own. The dark cloud of talc lawsuits continues to keep a lid on J & J's stock price. Here's a rapid-fire update on all 35 stocks in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use for the CNBC Investing Club. Coterra Energy (CTRA): At roughly 10 times forward earnings, Jim said he'd classify Coterra shares as dirt cheap. Estee Lauder (EL): We're downgrading Estee Lauder to a 2 rating Wednesday, meaning we're no longer recommending investors buy the stock at current levels. But we're sticking with Estee Lauder because eventually we expect China's economy to turn around, and with it EL's stock price. The semiconductor firm, which has seen its stock price nearly triple this year, is reportedly considering taking a long-term stake in chip designer Arm Holdings.

Here's a deeper look at the headlines and their implications for our investment theses in these two health-care companies. The Club's take: The first-of-their-kind FDA and CMS actions came in generally as anticipated, and represent incremental positives for Eli Lilly. That's why some of the decline seen Friday in Eli Lilly shares – down over 2%, to around $453 each – could simply represent a sell-the-news situation. Eli Lilly has said donanemab could be approved by the FDA late this year or in early 2024. Our expectations around donanemab sales also are measured, and the drug is not the primary driver of our multiyear optimism for Eli Lilly.

While the natural inclination is to cheer a strong jobs market, investors are responding with a boo and bailing out of risk assets. The thinking goes like this: If people are at work and the labor market is stronger than expected, the ability of the consumer to absorb higher prices is also greater than previously thought. If the ability to absorb higher prices is greater than expected, above target (2%) inflation can last longer than estimated, regardless of the current fed funds rate. If the current fed funds rate isn't stopping hiring and consumers' ability to absorb higher prices, the rate simply isn't high enough. Energy is tough: We really need China's reopening to pick up as demand will be the key to higher energy prices.

Moderna on Wednesday said it struck a deal with Chinese officials to research, develop and manufacture messenger RNA medicines in the country, despite rising tensions between the U.S. and China. The Massachusetts-based biotech company signed a memorandum of understanding and a related land collaboration deal to develop drugs that will "be exclusively for the Chinese people" and won't "be exported," a Moderna spokesperson told CNBC. The Moderna spokesperson did not confirm the report or comment on the size of the deal. Moderna in May said it was keen to sell its mRNA Covid vaccine to China after registering a legal entity in the world's second-largest economy. The country has also struggled to develop mRNA technology at home during the pandemic.

NEW YORK/LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - A lackluster IPO market is showing signs of life as a flurry of deals in the United States and Europe raise hopes that a recovery may be in sight. With investors now predicting an end to the Federal Reserve's rate hikes later this year, optimism has resumed. This allowed thrift shop chain Savers Value Village (SVV.N) to raise $401 million in its New York IPO this week, more than it originally set out to. Investors continued to snap up its shares, with the stock closing up 27% on its first day of trading. New York CNN Business —The Covid-19 pandemic exposed glaring weaknesses in America’s medical supply chains, causing a frantic scramble for masks, respirators and other gear needed to fight the virus. Now, a bipartisan effort in Congress is attempting to boost medical supply chain resilience and ease the country’s reliance on less friendly nations like China for critical medical supplies – before the next disaster strikes. The bill aims to improve supply chain resilience by giving the White House the ability to diversify and expand supply networks while simultaneously eliminating unneeded trade barriers. Earlier this month, the White House hailed the end of the supply chain nightmare that had sent consumer prices surging and left some store shelves empty. The administration released a scorecard that indicated dozens of recommendations from a 2021 supply chain review have been implemented, including some related to strained medical supply chains.

This spike bodes well for the IPO market, bankers say, because both new listings and secondary stock sales rely on strong demand from equity investors. "Historically, follow-on activity of this magnitude should lead to animal spirits in the IPO market," said Daniel Burton-Morgan, head of Americas syndicate for equity capital markets at Bank of America Corp (BAC.N). The IPO market has been in the doldrums since the start of 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a spike in inflation fueled a bout of market volatility as investors fretted over U.S. interest rate hikes. The week of June 5 saw 19 follow-on and secondary stock sales in the United States, totaling proceeds of $6.6 billion, one of the highest weekly tallies since the end of 2021. IPO HOPEFULSMajor companies are waiting in the wings to launch their market debut come September, when the IPO window traditionally opens after a summer lull.
