Hurricane Helene ravaged western North Carolina over the weekend, leaving behind a trail of death and devastation. North Carolina emergency crews were racing Monday to deliver food and other essential supplies to areas hit hard by Helene. At least 40 people were dead in Buncombe County, home of the thriving mountain city of Asheville, according to law enforcement officials. Photos and videos from Asheville, home to some 95,000 people, captured harrowing scenes and showed neighborhoods rendered unrecognizable by Helene’s impact. The approximately 44 people dead in North Carolina represent a third of all fatalities from the storm.

It’s an elite club that enjoys private jet travel, which can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000-plus for a single leg. Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. Southwest left four airports altogether in August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. This means Icelandair passengers can connect in the US on Southwest flights, and vice versa.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines raised its third-quarter revenue forecast on Thursday, announced its board authorized $2.5 billion in share buybacks and detailed a host of changes to its business model as it seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management. Southwest executives are presenting their vision for the company's future at the airline's Dallas headquarters on Thursday in an investor day presentation. Southwest executives will try to convince investors that it is on the right track to boost profits and increase revenue. A day earlier, Southwest told staff it will slash its service in Atlanta next year and could cut more than 300 flight attendants and pilots from the city in an effort to reduce costs. Elliott later told Southwest mechanics' union that it still wanted a leadership change at the top of the carrier.
