For The New York Times' games app, it filled me with ire; I can't do a Sunday crossword in 10-minute increments. One downloaded it, restricted TikTok, and then texted me: "I'm currently scrolling on TikTok and plan to all day. Royce Branning, a cofounder of Clearspace, says the company started testing the friends feature after hearing that users were taking screenshots of their Clearspace screen tracking and sharing it with one another. I'm not sure where my friends spent all their screen time, but being on a phone doesn't inherently ruin your life. Maybe logging in to an app like Clearspace with friends, family, and romantic partners could help people police each other.

If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. They lost a number of key players in the summer and can’t even play Champions League games at their own home, with the 15,000 capacity Stade Francis-Le Ble not up to Champions League standards (they’re hosting matches at Guingamp’s Stade du Roudourou instead).

Vice presidential nominees traditionally play the role of attack dog for the top of their tickets – in this case, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. Walz earned the Democratic vice presidential nod in part because of his branding of the GOP ticket as “weird” in television interviews that served as semi-auditions for the role. Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have at times struggled to get on the same page on the issue of abortion. Walz could play the part Biden once did in a debate against another rising young conservative, when the then-vice president stymied Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan in a crucial 2012 debate. When Trump brought up Springfield during the presidential debate last month, the moderators fact-checked him in real-time.

Super Typhoon Krathon, equivalent to a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane, is currently situated in the Bashi Channel in the northern part of the Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the Philippines. As of 11:30 a.m. local time Tuesday, it had winds of 240 kph (150 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The storm, known locally in the Philippines as Julien, has already lashed the country’s northernmost islands, prompting evacuations and severe flooding in coastal communities. Rescuers help residents as they negotiate floods caused by powerful Typhoon Krathon locally called "Typhoon Julian" at Bacarra, Ilocos Norte province, northern Philippines on Monday, September 30, 2024. Lawyers for New York Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the bribery charge included in his federal indictment, saying the government’s allegations are “extraordinarily vague” and failed to prove Adams broke the law. Adams was charged last week with five criminal counts, including bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national. He is the first sitting mayor of New York City to face criminal charges in the modern era. “The zealous prosecutors who secured the indictment would have alleged that kind of specific agreement if they had any evidence to support it,” Spiro added. Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment on the defense’s motion to dismiss the bribery charge.

America's absurd war on 'organized retail crime'

Organized retail crime "is not shoplifting," the agency says on its website, "and these crimes are not victimless." AdvertisementOne homeless woman in jail who pleaded guilty to felony organized retail theft tells me she steals out of desperation. Gavin Newsom sent $267 million to cities across California to increase arrests of organized retail crime — and the crackdown has escalated dramatically. Even the guy who says he coined the term "organized retail crime" can't say how much is lost to it. Gavin Newsom has provided California cities with $267 million and signed 10 new bills into law to bolster the prosecution of organized retail crime.

In a court filing Monday, Eric Adams argues his bribery charge should be dismissed. The NYC mayor says it was legal for him to accept lavish travel accommodations from Turkey. AdvertisementIn a court filing Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge in Manhattan to dismiss the bribery charge against him, arguing that the lavish travel accommodations he accepted from Turkish officials were gifts, not bribes. "The indictment does not allege that Mayor Adams agreed to perform any official act at the time that he received a benefit," Adams' motion argues. The other charges in Adams' indictment allege he knowingly sought and accepted illegal campaign contributions from corporations and foreign nationals.

In a statement, the company said it was no longer operating, extended its condolences to relatives of the victims, and noted it has cooperated with the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board investigations. Neubauer said the testimony gave important insight into the potential motivation in Rush and his company. Peter Girguis, a Harvard University professor and oceanographer who monitored the hearing, told CNN evidence of Rush’s ego-driven approach and heedlessness to repeated safety concerns appears to loom large in the disaster. As federal investigations swirled around Eric Adams over the past year, the New York City mayor stuck to a familiar script. In one instance, an unidentified Adams staffer agreed to an interview with FBI agents. In March 2019, an Adams staffer was exchanging text messages with the then-Brooklyn borough president about another possible trip to Turkey. “To be o[n the] safe side Please Delete all messages you send me,” the staffer wrote Adams, according to the indictment. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will step into a Manhattan courtroom and into the history books on Friday when he is arraigned on federal corruption and bribery charges that could force him out of office. Adams is the first sitting New York City mayor to be indicted on criminal charges in the modern era. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said Thursday. Adams' indictment capped two weeks of turmoil in his administration, a period during which Banks, the city’s police commissioner, and the city's top lawyer, have announced their resignations. “You could almost picture them trying to cobble this together and try to tell a story so that they could say, ‘corruption, corruption’ at a press conference,” Spiro said at a Thursday press conference.
