July 31 (Reuters) - The judge presiding over a Georgia grand jury investigation into Donald Trump on Monday rejected the former U.S. president's bid to disqualify the lead prosecutor and block any indictments stemming from the probe, which is expected to yield charges in the coming weeks. Trump's lawyers have filed a separate long-shot bid to disqualify Willis that will be heard by another judge next week. The special grand jury was convened at Willis's request to aid in her investigation. The jury, which had subpoena power but not the authority to issue charges, heard testimony from dozens of witnesses. CNN —A judge in Fulton County, Georgia, on Monday rejected efforts by Donald Trump’s legal team to toss evidence in the criminal investigation into the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia and to disqualify the district attorney investigating him. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney also rejected efforts by Cathy Latham, who served as one of the GOP fake electors in Georgia, to join Trump’s push. CNN previously reported that Willis is considering bringing racketeering and conspiracy charges in connection with Trump and his allies’ efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump’s team already raised their arguments before the Georgia Supreme Court, which dismissed Trump’s attempt to shut down the investigation. A hearing on that matter is currently scheduled before another judge on August 10.

Trump said his attorneys met on Thursday with U.S. Justice Department officials, in a sign charges could come soon. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that the Department of Justice had not told his attorneys when action was likely. Officials have testified that during his final months in office, Trump pressured them with false voter fraud claims. Legal experts said Trump may have violated at least three Georgia criminal laws: conspiracy to commit election fraud, criminal solicitation to commit election fraud and intentional interference with performance of election duties.

CNN —Donald Trump’s legal troubles deepened earlier this week when he was informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he’s the target of the criminal investigation into the aftermath of the 2020 election – the clearest sign yet that the former president could soon face more criminal charges. But without more detail, it’s hard to know exactly what shape the charges will take or what Trump 2020 election-related conduct they are aimed at. Among the potential charges Trump has been warned about is one pertaining to witness tampering, according to the Wall Street Journal and other outlets. Trump’s alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy has been invoked in the litigation around the House select committee that investigated January 6’s pursuit of Trump lawyer John Eastman’s emails. In the classified documents case, Trump received a target letter from the special counsel’s office on May 19. Three days after that, on June 8, the grand jury returned an indictment against Trump and his co-defendant and aide Walt Nauta. The special counsel has also probed Trump’s knowledge that he lost the 2020 election, pressure within the Justice Department to help with efforts to overturn the election and fundraising efforts after the election. Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, told CNN that Giuliani has not received a target letter. The 16 people each face eight charges, including election law forgery, uttering and publishing and conspiracy, state Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a video announcement. The case is the first time that any members of fake Electoral College slates for Trump have been criminally charged. Smith's investigation is focused on, among other things, the attempted use of fake Electoral College slates to thwart Biden's victory.

Some will say the case is not broad or bold enough, that Mr. Trump and the other alleged national ringleaders should have been charged as well. Others will say Ms. Nessel cast too wide a net, pulling in low-level party functionaries who did not know better. Ms. Nessel got it just right, prosecuting crimes firmly within her jurisdiction, while opening the way for federal authorities to net even bigger fish. Ms. Nessel brought the same eight counts against all 16 defendants. Until now there have been no charges centered on the fake electors plot.

Donald Trump received a letter informing him that he was a target of the special counsel’s investigation into his role in the events surrounding the Capitol riot. The letter is a signal that Trump is likely to be indicted on federal criminal charges relating to his attempts to retain power after the 2020 election. It is not clear what charges the prosecutors are considering or when indictments may arise. But when the special counsel, Jack Smith, sent a similar letter last month relating to Trump’s handling of national defense material, the former president was charged with 37 criminal counts within days. Prosecutors have also sought information about Trump’s post-election fund-raising.

CNN —The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a long shot legal bid from former President Donald Trump to essentially shut down the Fulton County criminal probe into his attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in Georgia. Eight of the nine members of the Georgia Supreme Court were appointed by Republican governors. Trump has other legal challenges related to the Fulton County criminal investigation that are still pending. Charging decisions are expected soon in the investigation, which is led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. A special purpose grand jury in Fulton County previously heard evidence from 75 witnesses, including Trump White House officials, former Trump lawyers and advisers, Georgia officials and election experts.
