It will also be the first time a US president has visited Angola, with which Biden has sought to shore up relations in recent years. As he hosted African leaders in Washington for a 2022 summit, Biden vowed to visit the continent the following year but ultimately missed that deadline. He scheduled a trip to Angola for this October, which was postponed due to a pair of devastating hurricanes hitting the US. The initiative is at the center of the Biden administration’s efforts to boost investment in Africa to blunt China’s growing influence in the region, which has outpaced that of the US. In an interview with The New York Times ahead of Biden’s visit to Angola, Lourenço said he is “ready to work” with Trump in the White House.

Freezer cookies are like cookies on demand. So I’m going to do this over a double boiler, which is my preferred method for melting chocolate. The idea is that basically, you have a lower piece that has a little bit of simmering water in it. You should have plenty of coating to get through all three logs, plus probably a little bit left over. Once you have those formed cookies, that’s actually the perfect time to freeze them solid.

Countries fail to reach agreement in UN plastic talks
  + stars: | 2024-12-01 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
BUSAN, South Korea Reuters —Countries negotiating a global treaty to curb plastic pollution have failed to reach agreement, with more than 100 nations wanting to cap production while a handful of oil-producers were prepared only to target plastic waste. The most divisive issues included capping plastic production, managing plastic products and chemicals of concern, and financing to help developing countries implement the treaty. An option proposed by Panama, backed by more than 100 countries, would have created a path for a global plastic production reduction target, while another proposal did not include production caps. At Baku, countries set a new global target for mobilizing $300 billion annually in climate finance, a deal deemed woefully insufficient by small island states and many developing countries. Plastic production is on track to triple by 2050, and microplastics have been found in the air, fresh produce and even human breast milk.

CNN —Instead of lounging on the couch after Thanksgiving, Americans headed to movie theaters, as the premiere of Disney’s “Moana 2” and the draw of “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” provided a big boost to the domestic box office. The success of the three films brought a new perspective on where the box office year can wind up, he said, since no one expected this to be a $420 million Thanksgiving weekend. Reviving the moviegoing experienceLoria said Universal, Paramount and Disney focused on theatrical-driven marketing campaigns, which movie theater companies could lean into. It meant movie theaters stepped up to cater to three very different audiences: those looking for epic historical action, musical fantasy and animated adventure. Dergarabedian said the theater screen goes hand-in-hand with streaming services at home and can build up the success of a movie long-term.

Volkswagen workers prepare to strike across Germany
  + stars: | 2024-12-01 | by ( Hanna Ziady | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
London CNN —Tens of thousands of Volkswagen workers will participate Monday in strikes at plants across Germany, labor union IG Metall said, marking the largest walkouts at the carmaker’s domestic operations since 2018. “If necessary, this will become the toughest wage dispute Volkswagen has ever seen,” IG Metall’s chief negotiator Thorsten Groeger said in a statement Sunday. The walkouts will be the first large-scale strikes that Volkswagen has faced since 2018, according to IG Metall, when 50,000 workers idled plants over pay. Indefinite strikes could also be called as a last resort, but only after members have been consulted again, IG Metall said. Volkswagen has said it may need to close plants in Germany for the first time in its 87-year history.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s determination to crash over traditional governmental guardrails will present a fundamental test of whether the Republican-controlled Senate can maintain its constitutional role as an independent institution and a check on presidential power. The clearest and most immediate point of tension is likely to be Mr. Trump’s efforts to skip the Senate’s traditional confirmation process to install loyalists, including some with checkered backgrounds, in his cabinet. But the president-elect has also signaled he expects Republicans on Capitol Hill to accede to his wishes on policy, even if that means ceding Congress’s control over federal spending. Both are powers explicitly given to the legislative branch in the Constitution. Lawmakers and analysts say allowing Mr. Trump to erode the Senate’s authority to pass judgment on nominees by sidestepping it through recess appointments or watered-down background checks could do permanent damage to the Senate and undermine the constitutional system.

CNN —Police in Australia said a woman was forced to fend off a deadly tiger snake in her vehicle while driving 50 miles per hour on a freeway outside Melbourne. The woman told the officers that she had been traveling 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) when she felt something on her foot and looked down to find a tiger snake — one of the world’s most venomous serpents — slithering up her leg. Tim Nanninga of Melbourne Snake Control, who was called to the scene to capture and relocate the snake, said the woman in Melbourne was very fortunate. “It’s a miracle how she got off the road and safely parked the car,” he told CNN affiliate 9News. CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a record-breaking defense budget, setting aside a staggering third of the government’s total spending as the war in Ukraine drains resources from both sides nearly three years on. The budget for 2025, which was published Sunday, allocates about $126 billion (13.5 trillion rubles) to national defense – amounting to 32.5% of government spending. The defense budget is about $28 billion (three trillion rubles) higher than the previous record set this year. The new three-year budget forecasts a slight reduction in military spending for 2026 and 2027. The North Korean troops may help Russia’s efforts for some time – but the material losses could be harder to make up for.
