Odesa CNN —As Washington prepares to welcome world leaders for a landmark summit commemorating 75 years of NATO, some 5,000 miles away I was having a heart wrenching dinner conversation. Michael Bociurkiw Chrystia Chudczak“My dreams have been shattered,” a Ukrainian friend, Inna Ivanova, told me at a restaurant tucked away in an obscure corner of Odesa. The question on everyone’s lipsLooming over the summit will be the question of Ukraine’s desperately sought NATO membership. Meanwhile in WashingtonThe forecasted record heat won’t be the only thing making NATO leaders in Washington break into a sweat. Given the high stakes for Ukraine, people here will be watching developments in Washington closely.

The NATO summit is being held in Washington, DC, this week. It comes amid rising global conflict and turmoil. But questions about President Joe Biden's political future will overshadow the meeting. But it's the political future of the alliance's most powerful member, the US, that will be among the core focus of discussions. Following his disastrous debate performance against former US President Donald Trump on June 28, President Joe Biden's political future is in question just months before the November election.

It could help former President Donald Trump's hush-money conviction survive the US Supreme Court immunity opinion. Trump's lawyers are about to file what's known as a 330.30 motion to set aside the verdict. The Supreme Court presidential immunity opinion bars official-act evidence. US Supreme Court/BITrump's lawyers now say there were at least four times that the judge improperly let Manhattan prosecutors show official-act evidence to the jury. Trump's hush-money conviction appeal will take years and could even lead back to the US Supreme Court.

Two Democrats with a powerful network of friends are circulating a proposal for President Joe Biden to bow out of the 2024 race and launch an expedited Democratic primary to choose a new nominee before the August convention. The proposal comes as pressure builds on Biden to exit the race following his stumbling debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump. "Overnight, Biden is hailed as a modern-day George Washington, not an octogenarian clinging to power with a 37% approval rating," the proposal reads. The next phase of the plan is a "blitz primary," where prospective Democratic candidates submit their bids and delegates of the Democratic National Convention ultimately narrow down the list to six contenders. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposal.

At a campaign event in late June, Trump called Biden-era student debt relief measures "vile," suggesting that student loan borrowers shouldn't count on forgiveness under a second Trump administration. A recent Supreme Court ruling striking down the Chevron doctrine has already weakened the Education Department. Biden-era student loan forgiveness measures, as well as his new income-driven SAVE repayment plan, are making their way through court challenges led by conservative groups, which are not likely to be resolved before 2025. CNN —If President Joe Biden is not the Democratic nominee coming out of the August party convention, it will have to be Vice President Kamala Harris. African Americans make up about 14% of the American population, yet in 2020 nearly 20% of Biden voters were Black, according to Pew Research Center. You think the ignominy of Harris campaigning for someone else is going to bring Black voters into the fold? The vice president is in the best position to receive Biden’s campaign funds, since her name is already listed on the campaign account. Biden beat Trump 87% to 12% among Black voters in 2020, according to CNN exit polls. Harris attempted to convince festival attendees that “we can see it through” if they once again vote in record numbers. Many look to Harris as the obvious successor if Biden steps aside, with a recent CNN poll conducted after the debate showing the vice president outpacing Biden in a hypothetical race against Trump. The vice president was able to avoid talking about worries within her own party Saturday as the moderator did not specifically ask about concerns over Biden’s reelection bid. Meanwhile, other Biden surrogates at the event tackled the issue head-on, throwing their support behind the president and telling voters that he’s not going anywhere.

CNN —A federal judge paused some filing deadlines in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump in a brief order Saturday, and agreed to additional briefings on whether she should pause the case to consider what effect the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling may have on the criminal proceedings in Florida. Judge Aileen Cannon set a two-week briefing schedule for those arguments and paused three unrelated filing deadlines that were scheduled to take place during that period. Trump is charged in the case with taking classified documents from the White House and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Trump may claim immunity from criminal prosecution for some of the actions he took in the waning days of his presidency. The court’s decision directly applies to his federal election subversion case in Washington, DC, but it could impact all four of the criminal cases against the former president.

CNN —Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a former papal ambassador to the United States who became an ultra-conservative critic of Pope Francis, has been excommunicated for schism. As a Vatican diplomat, the archbishop was tasked with serving the pope, which makes his excommunication for schism highly unusual. The Vatican explained Friday that Viganò was excommunicated following an “extrajudicial penal process,” although the archbishop has said he did not “recognize the legitimacy” of the process. “I don’t know what happened,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State, said recently about the now-excommunicated archbishop. The Vatican said Viganò had been told of the excommunication and that only the Holy See could lift the sanction.

The concern is compounded because many believe Trump poses a threat to the future of NATO. Questions about Biden and his political future inject further uncertainty into a summit where key allies are also dealing with major political changes. However, as one former senior US diplomat said, there will “certainly be a spotlight” on Biden at the NATO summit. Adding to the pressure is the increased significance of this year’s NATO summit. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has sought to focus attention on the content of the summit and away from Biden’s debate performance.

CNN —Attorneys for former President Donald Trump are now seeking to use the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity decision to help him in his criminal case in Florida over the mishandling of classified documents. In a new court filing Friday, Trump’s team said they want an updated schedule in the federal classified documents case so they can argue points related to the Supreme Court decision. The decision “guts the Office’s position that President Trump has ‘no immunity’ and further demonstrates the politically-motivated nature of their contention that the motion is ‘frivolous,’” Trump’s attorneys wrote. The Supreme Court’s decision directly applies to the federal case over 2020 election subversion efforts in Washington, DC, but it could impact all four of the criminal cases against the former president. Trump’s attorneys argue the concurrence “adds force” to motions Trump has filed against how Smith was appointed and funded.

Biden is 81 years old and, if he completes another term, would be 86 by the end of his presidency. There is a move he can take to help turn the tides: Release the Hur tapes. In later testimony before Congress, Hur said Biden "himself put his memory squarely at issue." His White House lawyers also wrote letters objecting to the language, writing Hur characterized Biden's memory "in sweeping, quasi-medical terms." The audio of Biden's interview could be manipulated by deepfakes in a politically volatile moment, they say.

He has openly courted the oil industry at fundraising events, the Washington Post reported, promising regulation rollbacks in exchange for campaign cash.
