Lawyers for Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, are recommending no prison time for their client’s role in the implosion of the crypto empire that was run by her former boss and ex-boyfriend. Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over Bankman-Fried’s case, cited Ellison’s testimony when he decided in March to sentence the FTX founder to 25 years behind bars. Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, agreed to a plea deal in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried forced Ellison into a sort-of isolation, culminating in her moral compass being “warped,” the lawyers say. Her former roommates and ex-FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, will be sentenced in October and November, respectively.

While Trump tried to re-create the conditions of June’s fateful debate stage matchup, Harris reminded him, “You’re not running against Joe Biden. Harris tried to get under Trump’s skin, baiting him into a defensive posture that prevented him from attacking her weaknesses. And when Trump scolded Harris’ attempt to interrupt him, some allies lamented that he lost control at a key moment. PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.

Gen Z's fall travel trend requires participants to conceptualize, style, and photograph their personal belongings at the TSA's airport security checkpoint before hopping on their flight. The issue with high-achieving women, Byars says, is they focus on meeting only two of those needs — security (money) and esteem — while neglecting the rest. BOSTON — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to kill a group of Asian Americans and repeatedly hitting one of them with his car. “This defendant targeted this man solely because he was Asian American. He yelled “go back to China” and threatened to kill them before repeatedly hitting one of them, a Vietnamese man, with his car. There had been a dramatic spike in verbal, physical and online attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which was thought to have originated in China. “There are bad people who do bad things and good people that do a bad thing,” the attorney wrote in the sentencing memorandum.

I live in the great state of New York, where online sports gambling has been legal since 2022. Different state, different gambling rulesMy trash-chute gambling pilgrimage is specific to me, but it represents one of the many quirks of the legalized gambling industry. When you're in New York, you're not allowed to bet on in-state colleges. Leagues love gambling, until they don'tBut what makes this new era of sports gambling particularly confusing is the relationship between sportsbooks and the leagues they're setting lines for. Yet despite all the promotion (and sponsorship money) touting sports gambling, athletes betting on their own games is still very much banned.

I’m 36 — when do I have to give up crop tops?
  + stars: | 2024-09-01 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —As a pre-teen in Y2K, the (small) shadows of crop tops loomed large. In a decade when unforgiving low-rise jeans were the norm — and criticism over women’s bodies perfunctory — crop tops were not casual, easy wear; any softness of the torso was considered an aberration. Now that I’m 36, crop tops have become an unlikely staple in my wardrobe, and I’m reluctant to let them go. Can I still wear crop tops in my forties? I can also keep wearing crop tops for as long as I feel like it — after all, whenever I see a woman a generation ahead of me owning her personal style and at ease with herself, it gives me something to aspire to.

"Airbnb essentially allows anyone to sign up to be a host, which will always prove to be problematic," she told BI. Duncan Greenfield-Turk, the chief travel designer at Global Travel Moments, told BI that hosts had "without a doubt" played a big part in Airbnb's unpopularity. Hotels are making the most of the backlash by offering more personalized services and often matching or undercutting Airbnb prices.

Just as importantly, it’s also sent a political message to Kyiv’s allies that has changed the prevailing narrative of the war - that Ukrainian forces are doomed to fight an endless rearguard action against superior Russian firepower. A Ukrainian soldier walks past at a city hall in Sudzha, Kursk region, Russia, Friday, Aug. 16, 2024. But Ukrainian forces have shown that the conflict is not a one-way street. But his track record of handling recent crises in Russia reveals a different side of his presidential persona: one of paralysis and indecision. Despite a claim of responsibility from ISIS-K, he continued to insist that Ukraine, and the West had played a role. How much is too much to spend on jeans?

Of course, there were the aghast social media comments, those are to be expected, but the moment also inspired a reasonable question: How much is too much to spend on jeans? These jeans are something of an outlier, having been designed — undoubtedly — with celebrities and the 1% in mind. Cheaper options are plentiful across the market — from classic $100 Levi’s to newer denim brands, such as MUD Jeans or ELV Denim, emphasizing their sustainable or circular credentials (jeans in this category tend to be priced around $200 to $500.)
