On Sunday, the NFL will hold its first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, a city built on gambling. Even in 2003, gambling was as much a part of the NFL as tailgating, helmets and shoulder pads. Yet the change in the league’s relationship with sports gambling couldn’t be more obvious as it prepares for its first Super Bowl in Sin City. That direct spending is only part of the way the NFL has learned to profit from legalized gambling. The column came four years before the Supreme Court opened the door for legal sports gambling.

(AP) — DePauw University has received $200 million in donations, representing the largest gift in the western Indiana school’s history, university officials announced Wednesday. The private 1,800-student liberal arts college said it received a $150 million gift from an anonymous donor and $50 million in supporting matches from other donors. The donations will bolster campus-wide initiatives and the school's strategic plan, announced in 2022, that includes strengthening DePauw's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, its new School of Business and Leadership and its Creative School, which will launch this fall, officials said. The school’s largest previous gift was $128 million it received in 1999 to support teaching and learning. At the top of the year, gyms are typically swarming with newcomers who are looking to meet their fitness goals. But this year, many devoted gym-goers noticed their gyms are rather empty. While some people couldn't be happier to see an unoccupied gym, others took to social media to find out if "anyone still makes resolutions" anymore. But by the third week of 2024, social media users were still wondering why their gyms weren't flooded with people. The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

The Ely Shoshone, Duckwater Shoshone, and the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation — a coalition representing about 1,500 enrolled tribal members — are lobbying the federal government to designate nearly 40 square miles (100 square kilometers) as Bahsahwahbee National Monument. He testified in a multi-decade legal battle alongside ranchers, local officials and environmental groups who all opposed the project by the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Protecting water for sacred trees is not something the agency had previously done, Sullivan said.
