The move breathes new life into a group set to rival the G7 and brings the world closer to multi-polarity. BRICS leaders could be forgiven for not knowing whether to exhibit exuberance or concern on Wednesday. (Summit host, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, said it should be seen as an accomplishment for the entire BRICS bloc.) Hours later, just as BRICS leaders were sitting down to dinner, news alerts started to steal the show on the crashed private jet said to be carrying Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. Host South Africa just manages to pull it offThat South Africa managed to pull off hosting the summit is an accomplishment in itself.

In the Republican coalition, it is a moment that has culminated decades of change – and one that points to years of turbulence ahead. Overwhelming majorities of Republican voters dismiss the charges against Trump. In Gallup’s latest annual survey of trust in institutions, Republicans expressed less faith in 10 of the 16 measured. Veteran GOP pollster Whit Ayres points to another, more personal, reason so many GOP voters have discounted the charges against Trump. Trump is the Republican most effectively riding that wave now, but it seems unlikely to recede whenever he fades from the political scene.

The full-time remote work the pandemic brought means she's been more available to her spouse, to her kids, and to just slow down a little bit. The messaging was shifting away from what a boon remote work was, and firms were saying instead that they needed people back in seats. Many, especially parents like Danielle, found themselves reconfiguring their lives around remote work and said it's been productive both professionally and personally. But for those thriving under remote work, firms' attempts — or orders —to get everyone back in has come as an unpleasant shock. Do you have strong feelings about remote work versus in-office work?

This week, a reader handles her family's shopping, and her husband thinks she's wasting money. Our columnist suggests having him make some shopping trips and see how far the money really goes. I've saved our family money, but my husband doesn't seem to understand how hard our budget is being hit by inflation. Have him do the grocery shopping for a few weeks. If that's only "his money," then you're working for your husband for free, which, as we all know, is about as unethical as it gets.

But in order to fully benefit from in-office work, young-tenured employees also need experienced employees to work in the office as well. Now before the pitchforks come for me, I'm 100% supportive of remote work and I'm fully supportive of employee flexibility and all the great things that come with working remotely. But while many people talk about the benefits of remote work, few talk about its consequences. I've witnessed frequent situations where team members are reinventing the wheel due to reduced communication related to remote work. Adobe's Figma deal faces EU competition investigation
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Foo Yun Chee | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationBRUSSELS, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Adobe's (ADBE.O) $20 billion bid for cloud-based designer platform Figma could reduce competition in global markets for interactive product design tools and also shut out rivals, EU antitrust regulators said on Monday. The European Commission said it opened a full-scale investigation into the deal after a preliminary review triggered concerns, confirming a Reuters story last month. The deal would remove an important rival and could allow Photoshop maker Adobe to restrict competition in the global markets for supply of interactive product design tools, the EU antitrust watchdog said. It said the acquisition could also affect Figma's potential for growth into an effective competitor to Adobe's asset creation tools and effectively reduce competition in interactive product design tools by bundling Figma with Adobe's Creative Cloud suite. The EU competition enforcer said it would decide by Dec. 14 whether to clear or block the deal.

Go with a growth mindsetPrior to ChatGPT's public launch, most managers had minimal experience using generative AI. That changed quickly as some businesses — including IBM — suggested that managers start using AI or risk losing their jobs. The better question for leaders is, "Do I believe I can learn to leverage generative AI in a productive way?" We are seeing this at an organizational level with AI, as some leaders put the brakes on using generative AI, based in part on perception of an AI-related skills gap among employees and the challenge of filling that. The conclusion here is that to get the best of generative AI, don't play into a dictator-servant relationship.

The poll found voters divided exactly in half over whether they intended to vote for Democrats or Republicans in the next Congressional election. While surveys now usually show Biden leading Trump, the president’s margin rarely exceeds his four-point margin of victory from 2020. Instead, the pandemic quickly evolved into just another front in the preexisting culture war lines of division between the parties. Yet Biden, as noted above, still maintained his 2020 lead over Trump in these seats of four percentage points. Surveys have found widespread concern among voters that Biden is too old to effectively handle the presidency.

One of the biggest adjustments for me was how everyone looks to you for decision making about even very minor things. I always want things to be collaborative, and often people don’t want that — they want you to lead. The other big thing was trying to balance my time and learning what and how to prioritize. Part of your job involves talking to artists who can feel vulnerable and anxious about their careers. When we are having difficult conversations, I want them to feel they are getting an honest answer, not just being calmed down.

The Fed last week raised its policy rate to the 5.25%-5.50% range, the 11th increase in the last 12 meetings. Core inflation is still pretty elevated," Powell said in a press conference after the end of the Fed's two-day policy meeting. We think we're going to need to hold policy at restrictive levels for some time. The Fed's policy rate influences the economy by changing what lenders charge consumers for credit card, auto, and home loans or what businesses pay on bonds or for credit lines. "Given that inflation is still sticky, they're going to end up with rates either too high or as high as they are for too long.

American Airlines pilots' union said Thursday that they agreed to a sweetened offer for a new labor contract, less than two weeks after a richer deal at rival United Airlines derailed voting at American. "We appreciate the Allied Pilots Association for its collaborative work to reach an updated agreement on a four-year contract for American's pilots," American said in a statement. American's pilots would start voting on the new deal in August. The deal is the latest in the transportation industry where workers are seeking, and getting, higher wages. A shortage of pilots has emboldened unions to seek bigger raises and other improvements after the pandemic stalled negotiations.

The Urban Institute's research, and feedback from experts, points to three changes that may help bolster social supports for long Covid sufferers. Moreover, people who develop long Covid may have a longer amount of time before they have to return to work.
