The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday sued Visa , the world's biggest payments network, saying it propped up an illegal monopoly over debit payments by imposing "exclusionary" agreements on partners and smothering upstart firms. "Merchants and banks pass along those costs to consumers, either by raising prices or reducing quality or service," Garland said. "As a result, Visa's unlawful conduct affects not just the price of one thing – but the price of nearly everything." "These agreements penalize Visa's customers who route transactions to a different debit network or alternative payment system." 4 behind Visa, MasterCard and American Express .

U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. But given the geopolitical backdrop for Biden's speech, there will be little time for victory laps. Since Biden's last UNGA address in September 2023, ongoing wars in Ukraine and Sudan have persisted, while long-simmering tensions in the Middle East have erupted into deadly conflicts. Still, the Biden administration regularly emphasizes its commitment to a ceasefire and hostage deal. "This is one of the advantages of the UN General Assembly: You literally have the whole world here," said the administration official, who was granted anonymity to preview the president's agenda.

War death tolls are estimates, and exact comparisons between conflicts are difficult. “Prior to the Gaza war, munitions deployed with this intensity and with this frequency would have been almost unheard-of,” Ms. Tripp said. The Lebanese health ministry said that 94 women and 50 children were killed on Monday, or just over 25 percent of the total death toll. Those numbers suggest that the number of civilian men killed in Lebanon on Monday exceeded the combined number of slain women and children. And it is far higher than the average daily toll during the Syrian war in 2014, the deadliest year of that decade-long conflict.

California's attorney general sued ExxonMobil on Monday, alleging that the company had waged a "campaign of deception" for decades to mislead consumers and convince them that recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste. I hope this is going to open the floodgates," said Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics, a nationwide project seeking to end plastic pollution. In 1973, industry leaders called those concerned about plastic waste "enemies," according to internal communications from the Society of the Plastics Industry (now known as the Plastics Industry Association), which are cited in the lawsuit. "They were having problems with plastic pollution — people being concerned about it — and they have internal discussions where they say, 'What are we going to do about this?'" In the U.S., the plastic recycling rate has never exceeded 9%, the lawsuit says.

CNN —Police in Spain have arrested five people accused of scamming two women out of 325,000 euros ($362,000) by pretending to be Hollywood star Brad Pitt online. One woman lost 175,000 euros ($195,000) to the fraudsters, while another lost 150,000 euros ($167,000). Both victims were contacted via a Brad Pitt fan site by fraudsters who managed to convince them that the actor wanted to invest in various projects with them, police said. Investigators found that, as part of the scam, a network of bank accounts were created using fake identity documents. “Mules” were also used to help to launder money through their own bank accounts in exchange for a small payment.

New York CNN —The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Visa of illegally monopolizing the debit card market. The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. Visa, in turn, is able to charge more than $7 billion in processing fees on those transactions, the department says.

AP —Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill was officially written into law Tuesday, allowing same-sex couples to legally wed. The law was published in the Royal Gazette after endorsement by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and will come into effect in 120 days. This means LGBTQ+ couples will be able to register their marriage in January next year, making Thailand the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex marriage. Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity but struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon said last week that the city officials will be ready to register same-sex marriages as soon as the law gets enacted.

Other documented charges against pregnant women include criminal homicide and drug-related charges, along with one charge related to a portion of a criminal abortion statute that has since been repealed and one charge of abuse of a corpse. Certain groups have been advocating for fetal personhood for decades, she said. So instead, fetal personhood was indirectly written into other areas of law, with a particular focus on advocating for prosecutions of pregnant women. “The goal was not just to have these individual people go to prison, it was meant to set a precedent about what fetal rights look like,” she said. Marsh’s case is a “prime example of how pregnancy loss can become a criminal investigation very quickly,” Dana Sussman, senior vice president of Pregnancy Justice, told KFF.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. But the greater the harm inflicted on Hezbollah recently, the more likely a shorter-term Israeli success has seemed. New York CNN —In 2017, adult party game Cards Against Humanity bought land on the US-Mexico border to meddle with former President Donald Trump’s border wall. Now it’s suing over that land after another controversial billionaire has allegedly moved in without permission. Chicago-based Cards Against Humanity LLC, the publisher of the popular card game, filed a $15 million civil lawsuit Thursday against Elon Musk’s SpaceX over alleged trespassing on its lot in Cameron County, Texas. While the Cards Against Humanity’s land was vacant when purchased, the lawsuit claimed SpaceX began encroaching on its property, which is located just three miles away from SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility. The lawsuit claimed by allowing Musk’s company “to essentially steal the Property from CAH without remorse or even explanation,” CAH’s reputation with its supporters would be damaged.

That, after all, is what Project 2025 was actually meant to be. When he said, during his debate with Kamala Harris, that he hadn’t read Project 2025 and has no intention of doing so, I believed him. But Project 2025 — and much else like it that has gotten less press — is more than a compendium of policy proposals: It is an effort to build a deep state of Trump’s own. This is the problem groups like Project 2025 set out to solve. Behind the policy playbook sits a database of around 20,000 applicants ready to be part of the next Trump administration.

The Government Media Office in Gaza said 13 children, including a 3-month-old infant were killed. The Israeli military said that the compound was being used as a Hamas command center and precautions had been taken to avoid civilian casualties.
