Cruise operators lowered prices to lure passengers onboard following the pandemic, banking on onboard spending that has now reached record levels. Onboard spending in the second quarter rose 49.9% for Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH.N), compared with the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. Onboard spending rose about 36.8% for Royal Caribbean Cruises and 17.2% for Carnival in the same period. Susquehanna said it's "setting sail" on Norwegian Cruise Line . The firm downgraded its rating on Norwegian Cruise Line shares to neutral from positive. To be sure, Stathoulopoulos highlighted various enterprise initiatives and efforts toward changing the company's core culture. He added that the company is "leaving no stone unturned" toward cost-cutting measures across the board. "While we view NCLH's 'soft' long-term plan as strategically sound, absent a more formal or explicit long-term guide … and given lingering macro uncertainty, we see better risk/reward in peer [Royal Caribbean]," Stathoulopoulos added.

The Norwegian Pearl cruise ship is seen docked at Miami port, after Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd cancelled sailings amid rising fears of Omicron-related coronavirus infections, in Miami, Florida, U.S. January 5, 2022. Rival Royal Caribbean (RCL.N) last week forecast an upbeat third-quarter profit as well as lifted its annual profit expectations. Norwegian Cruise forecast its annual adjusted EBITDA, a key measure of profitability, between $1.85 billion and $1.95 billion, up from $1.80 billion to $1.95 billion previously. Despite undertaking price hikes on its itineraries, Norwegian Cruise has been bogged down by inflation and higher labor costs. Rival Carnival (CCL.N) has also forecast third-quarter profit below estimates on higher costs.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH.N) forecast third-quarter profit below estimates on Tuesday as higher costs offset its gains from pent-up demand for leisure travel and raised ticket prices, sending its shares down about 10% before the bell. Despite undertaking price hikes, higher costs and spiraling marketing expenses have eroded the benefits of a recent resurgence in demand from affluent customers. Rival Carnival (CCL.N) has forecast third-quarter profit below estimates, signalling that rising marketing and labor costs were eating into its gains from higher ticket prices and steady demand. Norwegian Cruise expects third-quarter adjusted profit of 70 cents per share, compared with analysts' average estimate of 79 cents, according to data from Refinitiv. However, the cruise operator expects full-year adjusted profit of 80 cents per share, compared with its earlier forecast of 75 cents.

Analysts point to receding recession concerns and the prospect of a less aggressive policy stance from the U.S. Federal Reserve as factors fuelling hopes for a broader market rally. The second quarter earnings season has started positively for cyclical sectors, with over a quarter of the global companies announcing their results so far, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. "The upcoming earnings season has the potential to broaden the rally for sure. However, there are plenty of laggards especially in cyclical sectors such as financials and consumer discretionary, which are available at attractive valuations, analysts say. Over the past month, the communication services, mining and financial sectors have all posted about 5% gains, outpacing the tech sector's modest 2% rise.

REUTERS/Manuel Silvestri/File PhotoJuly 31 (Reuters) - UNESCO experts have recommended that Venice and its lagoon be added to its list of World Heritage in Danger as Italy is not doing enough to protect the city from the impact of climate change and mass tourism. UNESCO World Heritage Centre experts regularly review the state of the UN cultural agency's 1,157 World Heritage sites, and at a meeting in Riyadh in September, a committee of 21 UNESCO member states will review more than 200 sites and decide which to add to the danger list. Other sites recommended to be put on the danger list this year are the cities of Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine. A spokesperson for the Venice municipality told Reuters the city "will carefully read the proposed decision published today by the Center for UNESCO's World Heritage Committee and will discuss it with the government".

Cruise lines are seemingly adopting the budget airline model: Charge a base fare and pile on extras. Newer cruise ships have "more opportunities to upsell" with restaurant and entertainment options. In fact, cruise lines have told their investors recently that passengers are embracing these add-on costs — and enhancing their bottom lines. "Cruise lines are creative to try to make you forget you actually bought some things nine months ago," Scholes said. However, many consumers — and even business leaders — are still confused about what the metaverse actually is and how it will work. No matter what you call it — the metaverse, spatial computing, the 3D web – when the metaverse is broken down into its component parts, more realistic applications emerge. "We call it Metaverse Technologies for a reason." PwCIt's not just retail; events that have traditionally relied on in-person participation are also embracing a combination of metaverse technologies. The Venice Carnival is just one example of how metaverse technologies can create new ways for people to connect, learn, and experience the world.

Passenger ticket and onboard spending revenue is expected to increase 66% and 36%, respectively. Cabin bookings in the second quarter were up 58% compared to this time last year. For Carnival, booking volumes in the second quarter were 17% higher than in 2019, Carnival CEO Josh Weinstein told investors in June. Meanwhile, investors will be watching if record nightly rates for on-shore accommodations can offset revenue in the second quarter. Hotel and short-term rental rates were about 18% and 35% more expensive in the second quarter than in 2019, according to analytics firms CoStar and AirDNA.

If the message of the movie is that all of us are Barbie and Barbie is all of us, the pink carpet did a good job of reinforcing that message (at least that’s what the cryptic trailers imply, but we’re not sure, as no screeners have been made available). Would Ms. Sontag have found the event sufficiently earnest? Many of the attendees paid homage to the plastic icon’s palette and smoothness of skin, but that’s par for the course in Hollywood. Following a cavalcade of YouTube personalities and influencers like David Dobrik, stars like Greta Gerwig and Issa Rae arrived in head to toe pink. Cast members like Helen Mirren and Will Ferrell did not make appearances on the carpet — a shame, as Mr. Ferrell surely would have looked great dressed as Barbie.

Many top performers in the stock market for the first half of this year were exactly what you would expect, if you’ve been following the news. Tesla, the electric vehicle champion, wasn’t far behind. But what were cruise ships doing near the very pinnacle of the stock market listings? At midyear, three of the big cruise companies — Carnival, Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings — were among the top 10 stocks in the S&P 500. Consider that only three years ago, in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, all cruise lines suspended operations and that in the ensuing months, the shares of publicly traded cruise companies were devastated.

The good news is market breadth improved beginning in late May and leadership has expanded to include cyclical sectors and industries. 63 cruise ships owned by Carnival Corp. emitted more sulfur oxides than all the cars in Europe in 2022. The cruise industry is investing in alternative energy sources such as LNG fuel and shore power. Though the IMO rule slashes the sulfur emissions of individual ships, it has done nothing to limit the increasing number of cruise ships in recent years. Compared to 2019, cruise ships are also spending more time at European ports and consuming more fuel, per the report. As a result, cruise ships overall emitted 9% more sulfur oxides in 2022 than in 2017, according to Transport & Environment.
