While investigating Gabriel for the international hoax in Norway, prosecutors said they learned that Gabriel emailed another fictitious threat earlier this year – this time to the University of Iowa. In March, Gabriel emailed the university indicating the same fantasy football group member was threatening to “blow up the school,” which Gabriel knew was untrue, prosecutors said. So far, there is no evidence indicating the suspect was motivated or instructed by foreign elements to target Trump. But prosecutors and investigators have made clear that they view the incident as an apparent plot to kill the former president and are working to build a case with those additional charges. He had not made any threats, for instance, against the president or former president Trump,” Berger said. “You are free to assassinate Trump,” Routh also wrote of Iran in the apparently self-published book. Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong aviation investigators say an engine problem that caused Cathay Pacific to ground its entire fleet of Airbus A350 jets for inspection earlier this month could have escalated into “extensive damage.”Cathay canceled dozens of flights in early September, citing the need to inspect its A350 planes after the engine issue forced a Zurich-bound flight to return to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff on September 2. The airline had previously identified an engine component failure on the affected aircraft, though it stopped short of revealing what the problem was. The AAIA recommended the European Union Aviation Safety Agency to require Rolls-Royce, the engine maker behind the popular A350 long-haul jets, to “develop continuing airworthiness information” on the problem. Following the incident, Cathay conducted a thorough inspection of its 48-strong A350 fleet and replaced components on 15 of the planes. CNN has reached out to Cathay and Rolls-Royce for comment.

The fact no details about the operation were given meant US officials were in the dark until reports of hundreds of exploding pagers emerged a short time later, the sources said. Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon was injured by the exploding pagers, according to Iranian state media. The notification from Israel was far more generic and vague, leaving US officials with questions about what the operation could be, the sources said. Since Hamas’ October 7 attack, Israel has regularly carried out strikes in Lebanon in response to the launch of Hezbollah drones and missiles. The breadth of Israeli operations in Lebanon over the past 11 months added to the questions about what Israel could be planning.

CNN —Iranian hackers sent unsolicited information they stole from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to people who were affiliated with Joe Biden’s campaign over the summer, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The law enforcement statement Wednesday said that the hackers’ efforts to send information to US media outlets have continued. Law enforcement officials have previously said that those efforts also included an unsuccessful attempt to hack the Biden-Harris campaign. The Iranian hackers did breach the email account of longtime Trump ally Roger Stone to target campaign staff in June, CNN has reported. Investigators believe the suspected Iranian hackers breached Stone’s account and then used that email account to try to break into the account of a senior Trump campaign official as part of a persistent effort to access campaign networks.

CNN —Microsoft said Tuesday that Russian operatives have in recent weeks intensified their online attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign by producing and disseminating videos promoting “outlandish conspiracy theories” aimed at stoking US racial and political divisions. One of the inauthentic videos, which Microsoft said had been viewed millions of times, claimed to show Harris supporters attacking an attendee of a Donald Trump rally. Russian operatives promoted the latter story through a website pretending to be a local San Francisco media outlet, Microsoft researchers said. CNN has requested comment on the Microsoft report from the Harris-Walz campaign and from the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. The Iran-backed militant group said the wireless devices began to explode around 3:30 p.m. local time in a targeted Israeli attack on Hezbollah operatives. Experts say the explosions, unprecedented in their scale and nature, underscore Hezbollah’s vulnerability as its communication network was compromised to deadly effect. CNN could not geolocate the image, but has verified it was published Tuesday, the same day as the explosions. CNN —US military aid packages for Ukraine have been smaller in recent months, as the stockpiles of weapons and equipment that the Pentagon is willing to send Kyiv from its own inventory have dwindled. The shift comes amid concerns about US military readiness being impacted as US arms manufacturers play catchup to the huge demand created by the war against Russia. In April, Congress gave the Biden administration an additional $13.4 billion to use specifically to send Ukraine weapons and equipment drawn from US stockpiles. There are also limits, the official added, to how quickly Ukraine can absorb the equipment and distribute it effectively. Austin acknowledged at the meeting that the US is working to ramp up production and “speed up deliveries” to Ukraine.

CNN —A district court judge in San Antonio ruled against the Texas attorney general’s attempt to stop one of the state’s biggest counties from mailing voter registration applications to a large number of unregistered voters. Judge Antonia Arteaga on Monday dismissed a temporary restraining order and a temporary injunction filed by Attorney General Ken Paxton as moot, since Bexar County had already mailed out the applications. County commissioners approved a plan on September 3 to mail roughly 210,000 applications through a contract with an outside vendor. The attorney general argued in his challenge that it was illegal for the county to arrange for the unsolicited, mass mailing of voter registration applications. US military completes withdrawal from Niger
  + stars: | 2024-09-16 | by ( Haley Britzky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —The US military completed its withdrawal from Niger on Sunday, US Africa Command announced in a news release. The US had previously said that the withdrawal would be complete by September 15. The withdrawal comes months after Niger’s military government — which took power in a coup in 2023 — ended an agreement signed with the US that allowed military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in Niger. A Niger military spokesman said in March that the agreement “is not only profoundly unfair in its substance but it also does not meet the aspirations and interests of the Nigerien people.”The announcement was made just days after a US delegation visited Niger in March. Those concerns were only furthered when, weeks after Niger announced the end of its military agreement with the US, Russian forces were operating out of the same military base as US troops in the country.
