Hong Kong CNN —Two tickets for passage on what could be the first Chinese rocket ship to take tourists to space were sold Thursday, according to a livestream held by the company, as the country’s commercial space firms aim to join a small but expanding global space tourism industry. Some 3 million people tuned in to the broadcast on Chinese shopping platform Taobao, which was the first time a Chinese firm has put tickets for space tourism up for public sale. Deep Blue Aerospace CEO Huo Liang (center) sells two tickets for his company's 2027 spaceflight alongside two hosts during a livestream on commerce platform Taobao. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin completed its first commercial human space flight with four private citizens in 2021, while Virgin Galactic, the space tourism venture founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, began offering regular trips to the edge of space last year. A report from travel news site Skift shows that seven major airlines have retreated from the country in the past four months. Longer flights require more fuel, which make flights more expensive. "Indeed U.S. carriers are making hard but very commercial decisions to drop Chinese services and redeploy the aircraft elsewhere," he said. So how can you talk politics when traveling abroad without offending others, looking stupid or starting a bar fight? Now, when I travel, I like to ask people about how American politics directly affect their lives. Let the other person talk firstPeople have different intentions of why they want to talk politics with you. But if you want to talk about politics abroad, you might want to consider how the locals communicate and adapt your style. She is American by birth, with European ancestry and British residence, giving her a global perspective on what it’s like to be an American abroad.

APIA, Samoa — The leaders of the Commonwealth grouping of nations met on Thursday ahead of a summit in the South Pacific nation of Samoa that will feature talks on climate change and the question of reparations for Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. More than half of the Commonwealth’s members are small nations, many of them low-lying islands at risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change. Among them is Tuvalu, whose climate change minister, Maina Vakafua Talia, urged the grouping to strive for the Paris Accord’s warming goal of 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), calling new fossil fuel projects a “death sentence” for his country. Island leaders are expected to issue a declaration on ocean protection at the summit, with climate change being a central topic of discussion. “Climate change is an existential threat,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong told a press conference after a meeting with counterparts.

The Atlantic magazine has found itself in Elon Musk’s crosshairs after it fact-checked a fake image he shared that depicted an article with a headline that never actually ran in the publication. The statement did not mention Musk by name. According to The Atlantic, it is one of several notable instances in the last several years in which faked images of articles from the magazine have gone viral. Both Musk’s and the user’s posts with the fake article were later marked with “Community Note” that clarified that the image was “not a real article.” The Community Note also attributed the edited image to the user and said it was “a satirical edit/photoshop of another article.” Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Forbes reported that in August, Musk reshared a post including a manipulated headline that resembled the British newspaper The Telegraph.

Former British nurse and convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby on Thursday lost an attempt to appeal against her conviction for trying to murder a newborn baby, amid questions over the fairness of her trials. Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. Letby attended the hearing by videolink from prison and sat impassively as the judge stated the court’s reasons for refusing her application. She can now only challenge those convictions if the Criminal Cases Review Commission refer those cases back to the Court of Appeal. Since her trials, Letby’s conviction has come under a spotlight, following criticism by some experts of medical and statistical evidence presented by the prosecution.

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

London CNN —Paddington Bear, probably fiction’s best-known Peruvian, has been granted a passport by authorities in his adoptive country of Britain. Rob Silva, co-producer of the upcoming film “Paddington in Peru,” revealed the existence of the British passport in an interview with Radio Times magazine published Monday. In the film, the third in the hit series, the little bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) travels home to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy. The movie is inspired by the work of late children’s author Michael Bond, who created the character of Paddington Bear in 1958 book “A Bear Called Paddington,” which follows the adventures of a small orphaned bear as he travels from Peru to the British capital. “Paddington in Peru” follows his return to his homeland to visit his Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton) after he is issued with a passport.
