Editor’s Note: Fareed Zakaria is the host of Fareed Zakaria GPS, airing at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET and PT tonight on CNN, Fareed’s latest special report, “Taiwan: Unfinished Business,” will examine the complicated history and present dangers surrounding Taiwan. The backdrop to the tensions over Taiwan is, of course, the expanding geopolitical rivalry between China and the United States. Washington has been willing to accept China’s claims on Taiwan as long as it did not use coercion to achieve them. This is one place on Earth where there should be little room for macho rhetoric and provocative actions.

China News Service | China News Service | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market. Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing's priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China's annual parliamentary meetings. Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers' high reliance on debt for growth. Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

CNN —A London judge has ordered former President Donald Trump to pay six figures in legal fees to a company he sued over a controversial dossier that made unverified and salacious allegations about him, according to court documents released Thursday. After dismissing the former president’s case last month against retired British intelligence officer Christopher Steele and his company, Orbis Business Intelligence, Judge Karen Steyn has ordered Trump to pay £300,000 ($385,000) to the company, according to court documents. Steyn ultimately ordered Trump to pay less than 50% of Orbis Business Intelligence’s stated costs. CNN has reached out to Orbis Business Intelligence and the Trump campaign for comment. CNN —The clock is ticking for Donald Trump to pony up roughly half a billion dollars to satisfy two recent courtroom losses. An appeals court judge denied Trump’s emergency request to stay, or pause, the deadline. A panel of judges has now taken up the motion to delay posting bond until Trump appeals the verdict. The appeals court is expected to reach a decision by the end of March – roughly the same timing as the deadline. Trump offered to post a bond of $100 million but that was rejected by the appeals court judge.

As he emerges victorious from the Republican primary race, Trump faces considerable challenges both inside and outside the political arena. Wednesday’s inauspicious start to Trump’s outreach efforts is reflective of the longstanding concerns about his temperament and style that inspired many Republicans to support Haley, Florida Gov. In cruising to his party’s nomination, Trump left little doubt that he remains the dominant figure in the GOP. From Iowa and New Hampshire through Super Tuesday, Haley especially exposed persistent divisions in the party and headwinds for Trump recapturing moderate support. Meanwhile, nearly three in 10 of all primary voters said Trump wouldn’t be fit for the presidency if he is convicted of a crime.

CNN —Donald Trump has put America on notice – his second term would be even more disruptive and turbulent than his first. He’s portraying America as a dystopian, failed state overwhelmed by lawlessness, urban blight and slipping toward World War III abroad. For Trump, America is not Ronald Reagan’s “shining city on a Hill.” It is a banana republic. Who are these people that would ruin our country?” Trump asked. After Trump demoralized US allies in his first term, Biden has reinvigorated and expanded NATO in responding to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – an illegal land grab Trump suggests he will reward.

October 1 has been the official kickoff date for the federal fiscal year since 1977. Lawmakers have passed at least one continuing resolution in all but three of the years in the nearly half-century since. Instead, they will wrap the spending bills into larger packages – frequently called an “omnibus” that is passed in December or later. In 1997, for instance, there was no CR, but the spending bills were all passed together as an omnibus. Don’t hold your breath for them to get the 2025 spending bills done on time.

Donald J. Trump was minutes away from being grilled under oath by the New York attorney general and he was itching to talk. But his lawyer at the time, Ronald P. Fischetti, directed Mr. Trump to keep quiet. Mr. Fischetti warned Mr. Trump that he was risking perjury charges, and that he would come to regret it. Over the past year, he was indicted four times and faced three civil trials. And as the former president’s first criminal trial approaches on March 25, it has become clear — as it was to Mr. Fischetti — that the single person who poses the greatest danger to Donald J. Trump may just be Donald J. Trump.

New York CNN —Donald Trump is facing a cash crunch as deadlines are quickly approaching to find over half a billion dollars he owes in judgments. The scramble over the past week reveals challenges Trump is facing in raising the combined judgments totaling $537 million. It’s unclear how much cash Trump has on hand. Trump offered to post a $100 million bond to cover the New York attorney general’s case, but the appeals court judge rejected it. The sheer size of the judgments raises practical questions about how the Trump could feasibly come up with the cash.

Team owners will meet at the annual league meeting in March to discuss private equity. The investment ownership model is favored in the NBA, MLB and NHL— but not in the NFL. So, what will a rule change mean for institutional investors and their Wall Street brokers, as well as owners and sports fans? Experts also think NFL team owners' "wealth would increase drastically," said Rotthoff— due to the considerable profits they've already made from team valuations in the past decade. Wall Street investment banks could also benefit in their role as advisors to wealthy investors and sports teams, including helping to connect buyers with sellers.
