My HomePod is now a very expensive doorstop

So, in November 2020, I dropped $299 on an Apple HomePod speaker to replace the records and turntable. I chose the HomePod because we've been an Apple family. The HomePod sounded great, working equally well across lots of different types of music — jazz, rock, hip-hop, '80s dance hits, ambient — you name it. It would often choke on songs that weren't available on Apple Music. I interrupted what I recognized as her AppleCare upsell pitch, thinking maybe I could get something out of the old HomePod before I sent it to the landfill.

Shekhinah Bass cut her teeth — and built her career — at one of the most competitive, powerful firms on Wall Street: Goldman Sachs. The most important soft skill that distinguishes high performers at Goldman Sachs, and propels people to successful careers on Wall Street at large, she's discovered, isn't creative dealmaking or a confident attitude — it's having a growth mindset. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is when you see your abilities, talent and knowledge as skills you can continue to grow and improve upon. In the workplace, Bass says, you can measure your growth mindset based on how you respond to feedback from your manager and co-workers. "With a growth mindset, you will see those blind spots as things that are within your control to improve."

Sean Paul Is Still Busy
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( Iva Dixit | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Long before he became the bandannaed and cornrowed Sean Paul who entranced the American public, Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques was just another young offshoot of Jamaica’s famous Henriques clan, one of the oldest Jewish families on the island, who immigrated there from Portugal in the 17th century. Kingston is a city that takes parties seriously, and the sound system was a key 20th-century innovation — a portable setup of amplifiers, turntables and mountains of speakers, all orchestrated by a D.J. Paul and his younger brother, Jason, were both enamored of this family business; Jason actually recalls falling asleep in a bass box as a child. When Paul was 13, his father was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. This devastated Paul — not because his father had been much of a presence in his life but because what little he had of him would now be gone.

Prominent China hawk Kyle Bass told CNBC on Tuesday that he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping is determined to "bring war to the West," with an invasion of Taiwan likely before the end of 2024. Bass, who is founder and chief investment officer at U.S. investment firm Hayman Capital Management, said that the West — and particularly Wall Street — is too preoccupied by the apparent economic unviability of such an attack. But, much like Russian President Vladimir Putin — whose war in Ukraine has isolated his country from the West — Xi is not solely concerned with the potential economic fallout, Bass said. Too Short’s Long (and Very Raunchy) Life in Rap

It’s a lesson rap has never forgotten — and only one among many it learned, in large part, from this rapper. To understand Too Short’s influence, it’s useful to consider that he found national success at a moment when rap still seemed like it might head in a very different direction. As his records crept across the country, another Oakland rapper took off like a rocket. MC Hammer was Too Short’s opposite: glitzy, energetic and so family-friendly that he had his own Saturday-morning cartoon. This failure didn’t bother Too Short: “I understand why they didn’t get it,” he says of New Yorkers.

[1/6] Los Angeles city workers hold a rally outside the city hall during a one-day walkout strike in protest over labor negotiations, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., August 8, 2023. Hundreds of city workers, including mechanics, lifeguards and traffic officers marched in picket lines at city hall and the Los Angeles International Airport, saying city management has engaged in unfair labor practices during negotiations over recruitment, retention and hiring issues. Some city services will be unavailable during the one-day strike, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. Passengers departing from Los Angeles Airport should arrive an hour earlier than usual in case of delays, Bass said. In July, thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles staged a three-day strike over wages, benefits and working conditions.

Northwestern researchers have created the world's first audio simulation of twinkling stars. They did this by converting simulations of gas waves produced inside stars into sound waves. They then converted these heat-produced waves into sound waves — a process known as sonification — to produce an "eerily fascinating" recreation of what this flickering phenomenon should sound like. "I think we were expecting it to sound unpleasant, but we were surprised by the sounds we heard!" Anders explained to Insider that many types of waves produce inherent twinkling in stars (the field of asteroseismology is dedicated to observing them).

CNN —Rising temperatures have sucked more than 10 trillion gallons of water out of the Colorado River Basin between 2000 and 2021 – a volume about the size of Lake Mead – according to a recent study. The Tier 1 shortage took effect in January 2022; a Tier 2 shortage – due to even lower water levels at Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir – was implemented in January 2023. Last summer in particular set off alarm bells when the water level in Lake Mead dropped an astonishing 20 feet over the course of four months. Although part of Kosovo’s legal system, the institution is headquartered in The Hague and staffed by international judges and personnel — which is how Mr. Smith, a U.S. citizen, wound up serving as its specialist prosecutor. It is always difficult and risky to prosecute national leaders with some popularity among their people. Even so, the Truman administration quietly undercut that pledge of unconditional surrender for Emperor Hirohito, fearing that the Japanese might fight on if he was prosecuted as a war criminal. The Truman administration left the emperor securely in the Imperial Palace while his prime ministers and generals were tried and convicted by an Allied international military tribunal in Tokyo.
