One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

The Democratic National Committee has launched an "informational campaign" that includes bilingual billboards across the city ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris’ Univision town hall in Las Vegas on Thursday night. The campaign directs Latino voters and union members to check their registration status and look at options on how to cast their ballots through IWillVote.com and VoyAVotar.com. The majority of U.S. labor unions have endorsed Harris though many union members support Trump. “Nevada’s Latino and union voters have the power to decide who wins the Silver State in November,” DNC spokesperson Marco Frieri said in a statement. Latino voters are a critical voting bloc and can swing outcomes in battleground states across the country including Nevada, Arizona and Pennsylvania.

In addition to the “unprecedented spike in threats” that Mr. Garland cited, there is other worrisome evidence suggesting the possibility of violence. At the Chicago Project on Security and Threats, a research institute that I run at the University of Chicago, we have been conducting quarterly national surveys of Americans’ attitudes toward political violence since the summer of 2021. In our most recent survey, conducted from Sept. 12 through Sept. 16, we found disturbingly high levels of support for political violence. And in this area, public attitudes can become reality: Historically, the higher the level of support for political violence, the more likely actual political violence is. If you’re wondering what “use of force” means to our respondents, for more than half of them it means serious violence.

As myths about Milton and Helene spread, interest in chemtrails increased too on Google search and social media. Despite the lack of evidence to support it, the so-called chemtrail conspiracy theory has endured for decades. Some of the promotion of the conspiracy theory has taken on a distinctively antisemitic tone. Peters previously promoted the unhinged conspiracy theory that ballots were flown from Asia as part of a plot to steal the 2020 election from President Trump. Friedrich suggested the conspiracy theories blaming weather manipulation for the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton is a way to distract from the real effects of climate change.

Favorito has also made connections with election officials around Georgia, some in Republican-leaning districts. Still, after Donald Trump lost the presidency, VoterGA began peddling claims that “significant evidence of fraud” existed in Georgia’s 2020 election. Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC affiliated with the Koch network of political advocacy groups, is launching a slate of new ads backing Republicans across multiple Senate battleground races, spending $8.75 million on a campaign focused largely on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration. With party control of both chambers of Congress up for grabs in November, the group has spent about $60 million on election advertising already in 2024, according to FEC filings. Americans for Prosperity Action backed Nikki Haley for president in 2023 but has focused its efforts since then on promoting conservative down-ballot candidates through digital advertising, door-knocking, phone-banking and election mailers. The group is not investing in efforts to promote Donald Trump this fall. It has contacted more than 9 million voters about congressional races nationwide this election cycle.

On Nov. 5, the Decision Desk will project 610 races across all 50 states, from the presidential election to statewide and congressional contests. Early on election night, the Decision Desk uses exit poll data to determine whether it can project uncompetitive races. When a party has gained a majority of 218 seats in the House, the Decision Desk will project control for that party. Other sources for election vote data include state and county vote computer feeds and websites, when they are available. Exit poll results are independently analyzed in real time, and NBC News calls all races as soon as the Decision Desk is fully confident in the winner.

But GOP members of the state-election board told CNN neither Germany nor the Carter Center should be allowed to be a monitor because of bias. Fellow election board Republican Janelle King alleged that Fulton County is operating in bad faith. Key swing states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are still experiencing a high volume of mail-in and absentee voting. That has prompted multiple lawsuits in battleground states where Republicans are suing to challenge everything from whether mail-in ballot envelopes are properly sealed to whether they are postmarked correctly. After his 2020 loss, he has railed against mail-in voting, saying this summer it “isn’t working, it’s corrupt.” But he also emphasizes that every vote matters, including early voting and absentee ballots. The Republican National Committee and Republican Party of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit to the state’s Supreme Court, seeking to end the mail-in ballot “notice-and-cure” procedures. North Carolina’s election board voted Monday to give residents in the western part of the state, which was hit hardest by Hurricane Helene, greater flexibility to vote by mail and run their elections. Previously, voters were limited to dropping absentee ballots off at the board of elections or early voting sites in their counties. Some of the planned voting sites are being used as shelters and warehouses for incoming sites, state officials said, while others were damaged or made inaccessible by the storm. The state’s voter registration deadline of Friday was not extended. South Carolina extended its voter registration deadline to Oct. 14, while Georgia officials say election operations are expected to continue smoothly.

The new nine-month Supreme Court term officially starts Monday, with the justices appearing in the courtroom to hear oral arguments. Major cases at the Supreme Court: U.S. v. Republicans challenged those changes, but the Supreme Court never took up a case about the issue at the time. CNN —Editor’s Note: This essay is adapted from Chris Wallace’s book, “Countdown 1960.”The 1960 presidential election changed everything. Countdown 1960 is the riveting new history by Chris Wallace, bestselling author of Countdown 1945 and Countdown bin Laden, offering a fresh take on 1960 and the dramatic 11 months leading up to a deeply relevant election for the ages. To put it simply: There is good reason to believe the presidential election of 1960 was stolen. And yet, in 1960, the candidate who “lost” refused to contest the results and interfere with the peaceful transfer of power. Kennedy won Illinois and its 27 electoral votes by just 8,858 votes out of more than 4.7 million cast.

And Trump is all but guaranteed to resurface at the Supreme Court in coming weeks to clarify the sweeping criminal immunity the court bestowed on him in July. “As matters stand now, this feels like the court is keeping its powder dry in case the election explodes,” Carter Phillips, a veteran Supreme Court litigator, told CNN early last week. A poll released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center on Wednesday found 56% of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court. Take, for instance, Trump’s ban on travel from predominately Muslim nations, which made repeat trips to the Supreme Court. Assuming the Senate continues confirming pending nominees when it returns in November, the next president is poised to inherit the smallest number of judicial vacancies since when George H.W. 'Set their sights on getting judges confirmed'The amount of judicial vacancies at any one time is fluid and can rise or fall based on circumstances. During his four years in office, Trump appointed 234 federal judges, the second-highest amount by a one-term president. “If Trump is elected, the judiciary becomes the Trump judiciary,” said Maggie Jo Buchanan, managing director of Demand Justice. Some Republicans believe that tradition will continue in the coming years, which could limit the amount of judicial vacancies the next president is able to fill.

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. One month to Election Day. Here’s what to watch

The (Donald) Trump campaign, on the other hand, is looking to the Sun Belt. Instead of knocking on doors in key states, Trump’s allies are using funding from tech billionaire Elon Musk to do some nontraditional things. But some things are still going to be much more expensive on Election Day than they were when Trump was president. It’s one month to Election Day, but that’s a little bit of a misnomer. No matter what happens with the 2024 election, Trump is unlikely to accept the results if Harris wins.

Former President Barack Obama is wading into the Senate race in Michigan, endorsing Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and starring in a new ad for her as some voters start to receive absentee ballots in the critical state. It’s the first time this election that voters will see a Senate ad from Obama as Democrats try to keep hold of the chamber, where they hold a 51-49 advantage. In the new ad, called “Make You Proud,” Obama underscores Slotkin’s national security experience before she represented Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “In the Situation Room, Elissa delivered national security briefings on some of the toughest issues we were dealing with. That’s why I sent Elissa to negotiate on my behalf because she understood when to compromise and when to stand firm,” Obama says in the ad.

And they’ve kept up a drumbeat of dubious claims about voting, along with the lie that the election was stolen in 2020. Prosecutors allege that the Trump campaign used similarly aggressive tactics in Philadelphia to force confrontation with election officials, which Trump and his allies used to claim his supporters were denied access to observe the count. Election officials have been operating in an increasingly hostile environment as GOP skepticism of election administration has climbed. Among them: shifting numbers of noncitizens Trump allies claimed had voted in the 2020 election. In Georgia, state courts are reviewing new rules from the State Election Board that Democrats say give county election officials broad authority to delay certification of the results in search of purported election irregularities.

And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.

MILWAUKEE — Former President Donald Trump has never stopped propagating falsehoods that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. “The Democrat Party is guilty of the Worst Election Interference in American History,” Trump wrote Wednesday on social media after the judge overseeing his federal election interference case in Washington released a redacted filing from special counsel Jack Smith. Trump’s campaign did not provide a response to questions about his repeated use of the “election interference” label. It’s part of an extensive pattern of false election-rigging claims from Trump — beyond his well-documented lies about the 2020 election. He was among the 139 GOP House members who objected to the 2020 election certification.
