When Kelvin Kiptum, of Kenya, broke the world marathon record in early October, he threatened a landmark barrier of human possibility: running 26.2 miles in less than two hours in a competitive race. Kiptum’s time of 2 hours 35 seconds at the Chicago Marathon brought him tantalizingly close to the milestone, a feat achieved once — by a fellow Kenyan in a 2019 exhibition — but only by using pacing and hydration tactics that rendered the performance ineligible for a record. Yet because Kiptum’s triumph came as Kenyan athletics is struggling with an alarming doping crisis, the 23-year-old record-holder — who has not been accused of doping — found himself discussing not only what he had done in Chicago, but what he had not. The record time, Kiptum told reporters when he returned to Kenya, was the product of running 150 miles or more per week at altitude, not the use of banned substances. “My secret is training,” he said.

GENEVA (AP) — The near certainty that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 men's World Cup unites two of the most influential men in world sports: the leader of soccer's governing body and the kingdom's crown prince. In the case of Saudi Arabia, U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi was slain inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. The men’s World Cup should earn Switzerland-based FIFA more than $10 billion in almost entirely tax-free revenue. “Mohammed bin Salman wants Saudi Arabia to be a hub of anything and everything,” Middle East expert James Dorsey said. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic and FIFA canceled the planned June 2021 relaunch in China of its Club World Cup event.

SANTIAGO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Chileans celebrated one of their biggest nights of the Pan American Games on Tuesday with Santiago Adolfo Ford claiming decathlon gold and the women's soccer team winning a 2-1 thriller over the U.S. to reach the final. The judo competition closed with Cuba beating Brazil to win the mixed team title and the great Idalys Ortiz adding another gold to her glittering resume. It was the perfect Pan Am Games goodbye for the 34-year-old four-times Olympic medallist, who has announced she will retire after next year's Paris Summer Games. Fencing was an all-American battle on Tuesday with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Nick Itkin and Magda Skarbonkiewicz taking gold. The U.S. continues to top the medal table with 76 gold while it closes in on 200 total medals with 178.

While there has been a lack of quality and depth across many of the sports in Santiago, it was never more glaring than at the first day of athletics. The Pan American region has for decades produced some of the world's greatest sprinters, including Usain Bolt. Brazil's Izabela Rodrigues claimed the first gold of the athletics competition winning the women's discus while the women's long jump title went to Colombia's Natalia Linares. Chile's Lucas Nervi delighted a small but supportive opening day home crowd, taking top spot on the podium in the men's discus. CNN —It appeared that Kimberly García of Team Peru had absolutely smashed a world record in the 20km racewalk event at the 2023 Pan American games – until it was revealed that the course had been measured incorrectly. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesThe corporation acknowledged that it hired Mr. Ithurralde, but only after he was appointed for duty by the APA. The final classification of the results still stands, meaning that García and her fellow competitors are permitted to keep their medals. Ranking points used for qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics are handed out based on race times and finishing position – which the athletes who participated in Sunday’s race will now not receive. “I have never seen anything like that before,” Canada’s Evan Dunfee, who competed in the men’s race, told Reuters.

Problems began early on Sunday when it was discovered the route for the women's 20 kilometre race walk won by Peru's Kimberly Garcia was nearly three kilometres short. After hitting the pause button the United States gold medal machine was back in gear on Sunday adding seven to their total. The Americans opened the Games piling up 59 gold over the first five days but managed just two over the next three. The U.S. also won three of the six gold on offer at the canoe slalom while the other three went to Brazil. Brazil finished the day claiming the gold in women's handball beating their great rivals Argentina 30-18 and in women's basketball with a 50-40 win over Colombia.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Peru's Kimberly García thought she set the world record in the women's 20 kilometers walk race at the Pan American Games. They blamed the Association of Pan American Athletics for the mistake. The gross mistake adds to Santiago's woes in the organization of the Pan American Games, which started on Oct. 20 and finish on Nov. 5. SANTIAGO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Peru's Kimberly Garcia won gold in the Pan American Games women's 20 kilometre race walk on Sunday but her time was voided after it was discovered the course was several kilometres short. Ecuador's Glenda Morejon took silver and Peru's Evelyn Inga bronze after completing a route which athletes believe was about 3km short. With women's event completed and the men's race about to get underway organisers delayed the start for over an hour to quickly remeasure the route to the official distance. Ecuador's Alexander Hurtado would win the men's gold in 1:19.20 just four seconds ahead of world championship bronze medallist Caio Bonfim of Brazil. "The expert commissioned by APA, Mr. Marcelo Ithurralde, did not take accurate measurements of the route the athletes took during the race.

While my body was returning to its natural state, the World Anti-Doping Agency discovered that some of my peers were purposely altering theirs. officials to look the other way while they continued competing, even though they had taken illegal drugs. In 2018 the agency announced new regulations that would apply only to athletes with D.S.D. And I would have had to achieve and maintain that level for six months before I was eligible to compete. Donors often give for specific purposes — facilities, faculty research, technology on campus, athletics, scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. The Wexner Foundation said it’s breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ attacks. Lawrence Summers, the former president of Harvard and US Treasury Secretary, has criticized the “morally unconscionable” student statement and Harvard leaders’ response. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues. Organizers of the Palestine Writes festival denied that it embraced antisemitism, according to UPenn student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian.
