AI stocks plunged on Wednesday after AMD reported guidance that put a cloud over future AI chip demand. AdvertisementAI stocks plunged on Wednesday after AMD offered analysts 2024 revenue guidance for its AI chip that was below analyst estimates. AMD raised its 2024 revenue guidance for its MI300 AI chip by $500 million to $4 billion. While supply constraints seem to be a headwind for AMD's AI chip business, so too could be competition. The company's MI300 chip is a direct competitor to Nvidia's immensely popular H100 chip, and AMD claims that its chip outperforms Nvidia's.

AMD reported first-quarter earnings and sales on Tuesday that were slightly ahead of Wall Street expectations, and provided an in-line forecast for the current quarter. AMD said its closely-watched Data Center segment grew 80% on a year-over-year basis to $2.3 billion thanks to sales of its MI300 AI chip, which competes with Nvidia's AI graphics processors. AMD said it had sold over $1 billion of the AI chips since it launched in the fourth quarter of 2023. AMD also makes central processors which are often paired with advanced AI chips in servers. How CEOs are preparing for possible employee protests

You can always choose to move on, but remember you don’t have a right to work at most companies. We can’t keep re-litigating when we also have a business to runYou speak with CEOs every day. Most of the CEOs I’ve talked to said they haven’t seen their employees protest, but they’re bracing for it. But I will say that I don’t think it will become that widespread because of how swiftly and unapologetically Google addressed it. I don’t think it will become a thing.

From Princeton University in New Jersey to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the same chant can be heard: “Disclose! The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary in scope from school to school. Other students, like those at Cornell University and Yale, are asking their schools to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. Other common threads include demanding universities disclose their investments, sever academic ties with Israeli universities and support a ceasefire in Gaza. Proponents for divestment counter that its value lies in raising awareness and stigmatizing partnerships with targeted regimes or industries.

Chip stocks fell on Wednesday after ASML, a key developer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, said that bookings fell by 61% sequentially during the first quarter, a steeper drop than investors had expected. During trading on Wednesday, AMD's stock fell over 4%, Nvidia shares fell about 3%, Intel shares fell nearly 2% and Qualcomm was off 2%. But the biggest drop affected chip technology firm Arm , which was trading nearly 10% lower on Wednesday. ASML fell over 8% on a day when the entire S&P 500 index was only down less than 1%. ASML also said that it expected that government subsidies for chip factories, such as the CHIPS Act in the U.S., would boost its sales.
