Intense fighting and high casualties in Ukraine have raised new challenges for military medicine. This summer, the US and Chinese militaries both trained on new ways to evacuate wounded troops. Since the Korean War, US soldiers have become accustomed to rapid "medevac" by purpose-built medical vehicles, ships, or aircraft. US Marines conduct medical evacuation drills during an exercise in Bulgaria in August 2018. "This is the first time mobile air forces were introduced in a medical exercise," said Su Xingliang, head of the coastal defense brigade's support department.

Tesla's value has fallen nearly $200 billion in just over a month. That's dragged Tesla's market cap down almost $200 billion to about $730 billion as of Tuesday's close, per Google Finance. A mix of inflation, higher interest rates, and recession fears have driven Tesla's decline. Higher interest rates tend to be bad news for high-growth stocks, including Tesla, because it eats away at company profitably through expensive borrowing costs. Investors also get deterred from piling into equities as rising interest rates tend to push up returns on bond investments, making them a safer investment compared to stocks.

Strong economic growth has spurred expectations that the Federal Reserve will leave rates higher for longer, pushing Treasury yields this month to their highest levels since 2007. The S&P 500 has lost 4% this month as the U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed to a more than 15-year high of 4.366% on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 technology sector (.SPLRCT) has dropped 5.7%, bitcoin has fallen over 10% and the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK.P) - a bastion of many high-growth names - has dropped 18.5%. Stocks rose on Monday, with the S&P 500 closing up 0.7% and futures pointed to a further rise on Tuesday. The S&P 500 is over 8% below its January 2022 closing high.

Jeremy Grantham compared the post-pandemic boom in stocks to the dot-com bubble. The GMO cofounder doubts AI buzz can offset the impact of higher interest rates and tech woes. The buying frenzy was fueled by rock-bottom interest rates, stimulus checks, federal grants and loans, lockdown boredom, and other factors. The resulting surge in stocks was "in many ways about equal to the 2000 tech bubble," the veteran investor and GMO cofounder added. Grantham added that a recession could still hit this year, and forecasted moderately higher inflation and interest rates in the years to come versus the last decade.

MORE THAN a decade after the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opened in 2011 in Bentonville, Ark., I found myself wondering if more art, culture and good food had followed in its wake. Founded by Alice Walton , daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, and designed by convention-flouting architect Moshe Safdie, the museum turned a spotlight on this southern city in the Ozarks. Named for the spring that feeds the two ponds that flank it, the museum holds work by artists such as Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A swift sell-off in technology stocks and surge in Treasury yields are punishing Cathie Wood's flagship ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK.P), leaving the closely followed fund down more than 20% for the month of August. Much of the gains for the year came as inflation concerns ebbed and longer-duration Treasury yields subsided. Yet signs of strength in the U.S. economy have helped push 10-year Treasury yields up nearly 30 basis points this month to 10-month highs and within inches of their highest levels since 2007. Higher yields often weigh heavily on technology stocks by decreasing the value of their future profit. August has been particularly challenging for the fund, which has lost ground every trading day but two this month.

The United States and PNG signed a defence cooperation agreement in May. STRATEGIC CHESSBOARDThe events in Vanuatu this week highlighted the challenges Pacific nations face in seeking to benefit from both the United States and its allies, and China. The U.S. Coast Guard has yet to gain clearance to enter Vanuatu's port, as it does in other Pacific Islands, Coast Guard officials said. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manesseh Sogavare is also reluctant to accept U.S. support. The project was the largest infrastructure donation China had made to the Pacific Islands so far, Chinese ambassador Li Ming said at the ceremony.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Vanuatu Prime Minister Ishmael Kalsakau faces a no-confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday, after the opposition accused his government of abandoning a non-aligned foreign policy by signing a security pact with Australia. The petition, lodged a fortnight ago, was signed by 29 lawmakers, enough to topple the prime minister. Loughman drew Vanuatu closer to China as the previous prime minister. Kalsakau has said the constitution requires an absolute majority for the removal of a prime minister. Kalsakau has reshuffled his cabinet in an effort to win support ahead of the vote, with the new deputy prime minister making a show of support for China.

Nicknamed “Moon Museum,” it was attached to a leg of the spacecraft and then left on the moon with it. Called the Lunar Codex, it will be split across three launches planned over the next 18 months. The artworks that make up the Lunar Codex will be miniaturized in nickel NanoFiche. Peralta originally intended the Lunar Codex to include only his own works, such as "Sonnets from the Labrador," but reconceived the project as a global endeavor during the pandemic. Jack Burns, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder, thinks the Lunar Codex is a cool concept.

Boeing said it is making an investment in Archer "that will support the integration of Wisk’s autonomous technology in future variants of Archer’s aircraft." REUTERS/Andrew KellyAug 11 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delayed a decision on whether to approve Cathie Wood-led Ark Investment Management's (ARK) spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), a filing by the regulator showed on Friday. The SEC is seeking public comment on the Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF application, and has pushed back the decision date by several weeks to potentially months. In June, BlackRock (BLK.N), the world's biggest asset manager, also filed for a bitcoin ETF, a move that many viewed as a gamechanger for the industry. In 2021, Wood's ARK and crypto investment firm 21Shares US LLC had first teamed up to file an application for a spot bitcoin ETF with the regulator.

Ark Invest CIO Cathie Wood told Bloomberg News earlier this week that she expected the SEC to make a decision on multiple funds at once. Crypto investment firm Grayscale is still awaiting a court decision after the SEC repeatedly rejected its proposal to convert the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust into an ETF. The Cboe BZX exchange filed with the SEC for a rule change in April that would allow the listing of the Ark21 spot bitcoin fund. The filing has since been amended several times and now includes a surveillance-sharing provision that was introduced in BlackRock's filing for a bitcoin fund. The SEC has rejected dozens of prior applications to create a spot bitcoin ETF, and SEC Chair Gary Gensler appeared to be leading a crackdown against the crypto industry earlier this year.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File PhotoSYDNEY, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Vanuatu Prime Minister Ishmael Kalsakau said political instability in the Pacific Islands nation could impact investment and tourism, after his government boycotted a no-confidence vote in parliament on Thursday. The reasons given for removing the prime minister had "no basis", he added. Loughman drew Vanuatu closer to China as the previous prime minister, until his government lost a snap national election in 2022. In a bid to boost government numbers, Jotham Napat stepped down as foreign minister and deputy prime minister on Monday, allowing a cabinet reshuffle that won back two lawmakers. Loughman countered that he had the numbers to form government next week, Vanuatu Daily Post reported.

While a decision from the Securities and Exchange Commission on the future of spot bitcoin ETFs could come as soon as this weekend, Bitwise Asset Management CIO Matt Hougan warns that crypto investors might have to wait a while longer. "In every case since 2016, [the SEC] has taken up to or entirety of the 240 days they have to review these applications," Hougan told CNBC's Bob Pisani on "ETF Edge" on Monday. Besides Ark, eight other organizations including Hougan's firm, Bitwise, have filed applications for a spot bitcoin ETF. Grayscale has also filed to convert its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust into a spot fund. "I think there should be a fair playing field that allows us to have multiple spot Bitcoin ETFs that compete in the market," Hougan said.

The Politburo meeting signaled policy easing, but outstanding issues — of debt, property, jobs and geopolitics — need significant improvement for sustainable inflows, the Morgan Stanley analysts said. In October 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had his administration send letters to thousands of clergy across the country, asking if the New Deal was helping their communities. Ellis, a Black pastor in Hot Springs, Ark., wrote, “especially as it relates to the Negro group.” J.W. The New Deal, more than one newspaper proclaimed, was also a “Raw Deal.”Eight decades later, that charge still hangs in the air. Conservatives have long assailed the New Deal, which radically expanded the government’s involvement in the economy, as the epitome of big-government overreach. But in recent years, progressives have increasingly argued that this pillar of 20th-century liberalism rested on a Jim Crow foundation, and laid the groundwork for the yawning Black wealth gap that persists today.
