In a fresh broadside against one of the world's most popular technology companies, the Justice Department is accusing TikTok of harnessing the capability to gather bulk information on users based on views on divisive social issues like gun control, abortion and religion. The Justice Department warned, in stark terms, of the potential for what it called "covert content manipulation" by the Chinese government, saying the algorithm could be designed to shape content that users receive. In the redacted version of the court documents, the Justice Department said another tool triggered the suppression of content based on the use of certain words. Certain policies of the tool applied to ByteDance users in China, where the company operates a similar app called Douyin that follows Beijing's strict censorship rules. But Justice Department officials said other policies may have been applied to TikTok users outside of China.

"It was never just going to stop," said Confino, a career coach who helps her clients break their perfectionist streaks and an adjunct law professor at the Fordham University School of Law. "Then 150 hurdles later, you realize, 'Wait a second, maybe that's not going to happen unless I do something different,'" she added. Perfectionism has risen significantly over the past four decades, according to a 2018 American Psychological Association study. The WNBA's new media rights deal includes a price reevaluation after the 2028 season to account for the league's rising popularity, according to people familiar with the agreement. The WNBA deal has been negotiated within a broader $77 billion NBA agreement with media partners announced earlier this week. Instead, the NBA worked with Endeavor Group's media consulting team, led by Karen Brodkin and Hillary Mandel, to assess the value of WNBA rights, said the people. The media partners aren't forced to pay more based on the conclusion of the reevaluation, but they will be incentivized to do so, the people said. A little more than halfway through its current season, the WNBA has already had 16 nationally televised games break the 1 million viewership mark — a league record.
