SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio town at the center of a culture war over debunked claims about Haitian migrants was forced to close its City Hall on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the city announced on its website and social media channels. The bomb threat "was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield,” the city said. The city’s mayor, Rob Rue, indicated Thursday that the threat included complaints about Haitian migrants in the city, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Springfield has recently been thrust into the national political culture war as conservative influencers and Republican politicians have repeated a debunked claim that immigrants from Haiti have been stealing and eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats," he said.

The campaign said Harris plans to do more interviews with local media in battleground states and speak more with her traveling press corps in the coming days. Her campaign’s media strategy has largely been a continuation of Biden’s, which is to minimize interactions with the media. Some allies said that Harris should use the momentum from the debate to change her cadence of interviews. “I don’t think you can hide for 56 more days from media interviews,” said one Democratic strategist, requesting anonymity to speak candidly. The Harris campaign also held a call that day, but it was off the record.

CNN —Pete Buttigieg on Thursday slammed former President Donald Trump’s recent false claims that migrants are eating pets, saying it’s a strategy to distract from the Republican presidential nominee’s record. “There’s even more to it than demonizing immigrants – although that’s obviously part of what he’s doing,” said Buttigieg, appearing on CNN’s “The Source” with Kaitlan Collins. Buttigieg praised Vice President Kamala Harris’ debate performance but stressed that groundwork and organizing is more important to win the race. “No one night, no one event, no one appearance, no one debate is going to decide this,” Buttigieg told Collins. "Polls clearly show that I won the Debate against Comrade Kamala Harris, the Democrats' Radical Left Candidate, on Tuesday night, and she immediately called for a Second Debate," Trump wrote. Harris raises $47 million in 24 hours after Trump debate

US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign rally at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 12, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris raised $47 million in the first 24 hours following her Tuesday night debate against former President Donald Trump, a Harris campaign spokesman told CNBC. The newest Harris fundraising numbers mark the latest blow for the Trump campaign, which has been lagging behind Harris in the fundraising game. The Harris political operation recently announced that it raised $361 million in August, more than double the $130 million Trump's team raised last month. The news of Harris' $47 million day was first reported by The New York Times.

Shares of Trump Media continued to sink on Thursday, closing at a fresh low, following Tuesday's presidential debate between its majority shareholder, former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. Shares of the Truth Social owner, which trade under the ticker "DJT," are down nearly 14% since the debate Tuesday night in Philadelphia, hosted by ABC News. But the slide in Trump Media shares — which often rise and fall in line with Trump's political fortunes — suggests that investors may not be convinced that Trump won the debate. In a Thursday afternoon post on Truth Social, the Republican nominee announced he would not be doing another debate. Shares of Trump Media are down about 60% since their most recent surge in July, after failed assassination attempt on Trump.

Harris’ campaign is also leveraging the endorsement of Taylor Swift, which could open a new seam of interest among the pop megastar’s loyal fanbase. The former president also Wednesday publicly toyed with the idea of a second debate, after the Harris campaign challenged him to another round. There’s a case for the vice president folding her tent given that she might not be able to repeat Tuesday’s performance. He weaved a dismissal of the Swift endorsement for Harris into a wider attack on the vice president on Fox News. The Trump campaign is sure to keep up its drumbeat of complaints that she’s avoiding deeper media scrutiny.

New York CNN —It’s easy to dismiss many presidential candidates’ campaign promises as empty, because Congress would need to approve them. Alex Durante, an economist at the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank, told CNN that 100% tariffs would threaten the economy. It’s possible he is floating 100% tariffs as just a threat designed to change the behavior of other countries. ‘No question it’s inflationary’The Trump campaign did not provide an explanation to CNN about how Trump would implement 100% tariffs nor what the trigger would be. He said Trump’s tariff plan, if enacted, would risk setting off a market panic like former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss did in 2022.

Shortly after Tuesday night's ABC News presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump, Swift posted her long-awaited endorsement of Harris' campaign on Instagram. At the time, he said he had "no idea" about Swift's endorsement. He had more to say on Wednesday, however, when he told "Fox & Friends" that he isn't "a Taylor Swift fan." Despite his criticism of Swift, Trump has previously tried to use the pop star in his campaign messaging. For their part, the Harris-Walz campaign wasted no time churning out merch after Swift's endorsement — launching a pack of two friendship bracelets for $20.

Former President Donald Trump repeated a broad range of false claims, internet rumors and outlandish conspiracy theories during Tuesday night’s presidential debate, many of which might have seemed unintelligible without a deep understanding of obscure corners of far-right social media. Late in the debate right before the second break, Trump released a torrent of vague claims alleging corruption in the Biden administration. “At this debate, it was Trump who relayed a (false) online social media meme about migrants eating cats that showed his team in its own bubble,” he wrote. During Tuesday’s debate, one of Trump’s bizarre claims related to abortion. Midway through the debate, Trump spoke about election security and alleged that an unspecified “they” are trying to get illegal immigrants to vote.

All three undecided voters assembled for a similar exercise in the Philadelphia suburbs remained on the fence, with Harris getting a look from two and former President Donald Trump from one. Undecided voters only account for a few percentage points of the electorate right now, according to public polls, with a closely divided country getting behind Trump and Harris. “Finally, we have someone who’s a woman who gets that it’s about us.”But Lewis said Harris didn’t fully seal the deal with her last night. Trump’s campaign said before the debate that he had already accepted debate invitations from Fox News and NBC News, and that Harris had not. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said he would participate in debates with NBC News or Fox News. Fresh off the perceived win, pushing Harris into several debates seemed like a strategic goal for Trump, and Harris rebuffed a request for one on Fox News in early September. Harris has not accepted a second debate with Trump, but her campaign appeared more open on Wednesday. “But the most important indication here is that Harris failed to explain why she hasn’t already done the things she claims she cares about.

The debate stage clash between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump drew at least 57.5 million viewers, according to preliminary figures from ABC, the network that hosted the high-stakes match-up. ABC's early viewership estimate represents an improvement over the debate between President Joe Biden and Trump in late June, which attracted roughly 51.3 million people, according to the media analytics company Nielsen. The preliminary data encompasses viewership on just seven networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. ABC said roughly 17.8 million viewers were adults ages 25 to 54; another roughly 14.8 million viewers were adults ages 18 to 49. Trump's conspiracy-heavy performance prompted concern from his political allies as he attempts to win a second term in the White House.

“Let’s have a good debate,” Harris said. The debate amounted to a missed opportunity for many Trump allies, who hoped that a solid performance would turn the page on Harris' "honeymoon" period. “She failed to meet the moment, with President Trump effectively reflecting the economic anxieties off Americans.”“Kamala’s joy doesn’t pay the grocery bills,” he added. “It is important that transgender individuals who rely on the state for care receive the treatment they need, which includes access to treatment associated with gender transition,” Harris wrote. In an early morning call-in to "Fox and Friends," Trump once again defended his debate performance and predicted Swift would regret her endorsement.

When the vice president mentioned Trump’s criminal conviction and outstanding legal issues, he bit. Welcome to a post-debate edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter, breaking down all the action from tonight's showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris, who took the Democratic nomination when President Joe Biden stepped aside following a catastrophic debate performance in June, delivered aggressive attacks and coherent rebuttals. He declined to answer questions about committing to a second debate, which Harris’ campaign challenged him to do in a statement earlier in the night. “I made that very clear in 2020, I will not ban fracking,” Harris said. He criticized Biden’s handling of classified documents, knocked him for opposing the Keystone XL pipeline and called the Biden’s administration “the most divisive presidency in the history of our country.”Read more from Sahil →More debate night coverageThat’s all from the Politics Desk for now.

PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.

Former President Donald Trump said he would not sign a federal abortion ban Tuesday night during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, saying he did not think it would be needed. “Democrats, Republicans and everybody else, and every legal scholar, wanted it to be brought back into the states,” Trump said. Harris responded by saying women in states that cracked down on abortion after Roe v. Wade was overturned have faced nightmare scenarios. Abortion has been a politically dominant issue since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, and throughout the race, it has been a tricky one for Trump to navigate. Trump went on to repeat false claims that there was "so much proof" that he won the election. And he dodged when asked about whether he had any regrets about his actions on Jan. 6. Other Jan. 6 defendants continue to maintain their belief in Trump's election lies. Trump's inability to acknowledge the reality of his 2020 election loss, Harris said, raises questions about Trump's "temperament" and his "ability to not be confused about fact," calling it "deeply troubling." Trump, who has called Jan. 6 defendants "hostages" and "unbelievable patriots" and has said he'll pardon "a large portion" of Jan. 6 defendants, said Tuesday that Capitol riot defendants had been "treated so badly."
