During her first day of meetings in Beijing, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen criticized punitive measures the Chinese government has taken against American firms. I’ve made clear that the United States does not seek a wholesale separation of our economies. Ms. Yellen conveyed her objections to China’s top officials, including Premier Li Qiang, in what was the first visit to China by a Treasury secretary in four years. A Treasury Department official said Ms. Yellen had discussed the outlook for the economy in an informal discussion with her former counterparts that lasted more than an hour. “The United States will, in certain circumstances, need to pursue targeted actions to protect its national security,” Ms. Yellen said.

Shares of Xpeng surged in pre-market trade in the U.S. after the Chinese electric vehicle maker reported a quarterly return to growth for car deliveries, following more than a year of declines. Xpeng on Saturday said it delivered 23,205 cars in the second quarter of 2023, logging a 27% quarter-on-quarter rise. That was still lower than the 34,422 cars delivered in the second quarter of last year. Tesla's strategy seems to be working with the company reporting global vehicles deliveries of 466,140 in the second quarter, beating analysts expectations. Nio meanwhile delivered 10,707 vehicles in June and 23,520 cars in the second quarter, not far ahead of Xpeng.

When Sean Liang turned 30, he started thinking of the Curse of 35 — the widespread belief in China that white-collar workers like him confront unavoidable job insecurity after they hit that age. In the eyes of employers, the Curse goes, they’re more expensive than new graduates and not as willing to work overtime. He has been unemployed for much of the past three years, partly because of the pandemic and China’s sagging economy. If the Curse of 35 is a legend, it’s one supported by some facts. That is a double whammy for workers in their mid-30s who are making big decisions about career, marriage and children.

The total tax breaks will amount to 520 billion yuan, Vice Minister of Finance Xu Hongcai said at a press conference. The announcement follows a June 2 Cabinet meeting during which authorities said they would extend and optimise the tax exemption and study policies to promote NEV development. Analysts said the cap on the purchase tax exemption would help drive growth of cheaper models that are mainly produced by domestic firms rather than premium vehicles from foreign makers. NEV sales rose 10.5% in May from a month earlier, showed data from the China Passenger Car Association. The tax break was announced in 2014 and extended in 2017, 2020 and 2022.

Americans are clamoring for new weight-loss drugs, but companies aren't rushing to pay for them. At most, half of US employers help pay for weight-loss drugs for their workers, according to several estimates. "The drug companies, providers, and patient groups are insisting that weight loss will improve health and therefore offset these massive costs. Known as GLP-1 agonists, the drugs — Wegovy and Ozempic from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro — mimic a gut hormone known as glucagon-like peptide 1, helping to suppress people's appetites and slow their digestion. Brent Eberle, the chief pharmacy officer at Navitus, said very few of the employers that worked with his pharmacy-benefit manager paid for weight-loss drugs.

But beneath those positive signals, the two-day visit to Beijing from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted another reality: a wide and dangerous gulf between the two powers. The timing of the visit, which followed two close encounters between Chinese and American armed forces in Asia in recent weeks, underscored the urgency of talking. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway once again increased its stakes in five Japanese trading houses, and Jefferies said watch out for more such buying from the "Oracle of Omaha." Thanh Ha Pham, equity analyst at Jefferies, said Berkshire's holdings in these companies could go even beyond 10% in the future, and collaboration with Berkshire's businesses is another avenue to explore. The 92-year-old Buffett paid a visit to Japan and met with the heads at these Japanese firms earlier this year. Like Berkshire, the Japanese trading firms, also known as sogo shosha, are conglomerates that are involved in a wide range of products and services, including energy, machinery, chemicals, food, finance and banking. "By investing in trading houses, investors obtain a well-diversified business portfolio that is not exposed to any single industry or geography," Pham said.

These consultations will be the first for Mr. Scholz, as well as the first visit to Berlin for Mr. Li as premier, who will be accompanied by a large train of ministers. There is little doubt their missions will be at odds, even as they try to shape areas of common interest. For Germany, the meeting will be an opportunity to assert a new stance, one in which China is still one of its most critical economic partners but also a “systemic rival.” That means Berlin will try to shield its critical technologies and encourage its businesses to diversify away from Beijing. For China, it will be an opportunity to convince its largest European trading partner to stick to business as usual — and drive a wedge between Berlin and Washington. How to maintain necessary economic ties with China, in the shadow of growing U.S. pressure to align with it against Beijing, is a balancing act Germany is still struggling to master.

CNN —Two professional Chinese snooker players have been banned for life and eight others suspended after being found guilty of match-fixing and other charges, the sport’s governing body has announced. Traditionally snooker was dominated by players from the United Kingdom, but in recent years has seen an influx of Chinese talent, with the sport soaring in popularity there. Liang was the first Chinese player to be suspended in connection with the investigation in October. The remaining players either joined in with match fixing or made illegal bets themselves. If any player is involved in fixing a snooker match, they will be caught and will face severe penalties,” he added.

On Saturday, when Austin took to the stage at the summit where global defense leaders gathered, he called out China for refusing to engage in military dialogue. China believes that a major country should behave like one," Li said Sunday in a translation provided by summit organizers. A new video, clearer than an earlier one, of a close call between US and Chinese destroyers in the Taiwan Strait has come out. The US Navy video shows the Chinese ship cutting off the US vessel. This incident follows another in the air in which a Chinese fighter jet flew directly in front of a US plane. "This is wildly unprofessional and provocative behavior on the part of the Chinese Navy," he said. American and Chinese naval vessels have had other close calls like this in the past, such as when a Chinese destroyer sailed dangerously close to the US destroyer USS Decatur near the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea five years ago.

Li Shangfu delivers his speech on the last day of the 20th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's annual defense and security forum, in Singapore, Sunday, June 4, 2023. That invasion has also drawn increased attention to Taiwan as a potential security flashpoint in Asia. “There is no evidence that China has a fixed timetable for invading Taiwan,” the report added. Meanwhile, Beijing’s rhetoric around Taiwan was one of several key triggers accounting for Japan’s growing concern over China, the report said. That has included strengthening trilateral cooperation with allies South Korea and Japan and revamping the Quad security grouping with Australia, Japan and India, widely seen as a counter to China’s military rise. It is Li’s first time attending the conference since stepping into his role as defense minister earlier this year.
