An American nurse and her child in Haiti have been freed by their abductors after their kidnapping in late July drew international attention to a wave of anarchic violence gripping the capital, Port-au-Prince. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says nearly half of Haiti's population - some 4.9 million people - are going hungry. An American nurse and her daughter have been abducted in Haiti, in the latest kidnapping episode to draw international notice, as a resurgence of violence grips the capital, Port-au-Prince. In a brief statement on Saturday, El Roi Haiti, a faith-focused humanitarian organization, identified the woman as Alix Dorsainvil, the group’s community nurse and the wife of the group’s director. She and her child were taken from El Roi’s campus near the capital on Thursday, according to the statement. Kidnappings in recent years had become a part of daily life in Port-au-Prince, where gangs have taken over many parts of the city. But, recently, the capital experienced a sharp decline in abductions, according to a report in early July from CARDH, a Haitian human rights group.

CNN —The Hubble Space Telescope captured an unexpected observation of a nearby planet that’s having its atmosphere blasted away by energetic outbursts from its star. As the planet is blasted by radiation, its atmosphere heats to the point that it escapes the planet’s gravity and puffs out into space. The planet gets hit with flares, X-rays and stellar wind, or a charged stream of particles released from the star. “This creates a really unconstrained and frankly, scary, stellar wind environment that’s impacting the planet’s atmosphere,” Rockcliffe said. Astronomers will conduct more follow-up observations of the system with Hubble to track how the planet changes in the future.

CNN —Before Alix Dorsainvil was kidnapped with her child in Haiti, the American nurse described Haitians as a “resilient people” who are “full of joy and life and love.”Her comments came in a video on the website of El Roi Haiti, the Christian humanitarian aid organization for which she works. Dorsainvil, the wife of El Roi Haiti Director Sandro Dorsainvil, and their child were reportedly abducted Thursday morning while serving in their community ministry on El Roi Haiti’s campus near the capital city Port-au-Prince, according to a statement from the non-profit. The same day, the US State Department ordered the departure of nonemergency government personnel from Haiti as the security situation in the country deteriorates. Dorsainvil, a nurse from New Hampshire, moved to Haiti after her husband invited her to the Haitian school to provide nursing care for the children, Dorsainvil explained in an undated video on the organization’s website. “Please pray for Alix Dorsainvil,” the school said.
