Private-asset binge exposes insurance to new risks
  + stars: | 2023-11-30 | by ( John Foley | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
The concept is not new: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has used its insurance premiums to help fund everything from railways to cowboy-boot makers. The prospect of insurance companies buying risky loans or private equity investments has raised eyebrows. Many private credit assets, for example, rely on so-called private letter ratings based on confidential data. Given the private nature of private credit, it’s hard to see from the outside how big these risks are, or where they lurk. Besides, even if the share of life insurance assets that are mis-rated or undercapitalized is tiny, smaller insurers could carry more concentrated risk.

GM’s stock jumped nearly 10% on the news. The announcement comes just weeks after GM executives argued the company couldn’t afford to give the union the wage and benefit gains it wanted. The UAW strike dragged on for six weeks and shut down production in key manufacturing plants. New contracts for GM’s unionized workers in the United States and Canada will cost the company an additional $9.3 billion through 2028. Even with Wednesday’s surge in GM’s share price, the stock is trading for less than it did at the start of the strike.

Gas prices drop more than 60 days in a row
  + stars: | 2023-11-28 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Gas prices have now fallen every day since the peak on September 18, AAA data shows. However, it’s normal for gas prices to cool off once the summer driving season ends because demand drops. Gas prices are now down 63 cents since hitting $3.88 in September. Yet oil prices — the main driver of retail pump prices — also have tumbled about 20% since briefly topping $95 a barrel on September 28. No matter the reason, gas prices are falling around the country.

Hafez, who CNN has reached out to for comment, is now suing Accuracy in Media for defamation and emotional distress, and the violation of his civil rights. Hafez is among the politically and ethnically diverse students across the country who are filing lawsuits in the wake of October 7. The S&P 500 currently sits around 4,550. BMO’s chief investment strategist Brian Belski has predicted that the S&P 500 will close out 2024 at a healthy 5,100. The S&P 500 has gained about 18.5% so far this year after falling nearly 20% in 2022. Despite elevated borrowing costs, three years of high inflation and increasing numbers of Americans dipping into their retirement plans, consumers continue to keep the US economy chugging. Google accounts include everything from Gmail to Docs to Drive to Photos, meaning all content sitting across an inactive user’s Google suite is at risk of erasure.

New York CNN —Enticed by deep discounts, Americans are expected to celebrate Cyber Monday by spending a record-setting $12 billion online shopping. The early results suggest the holiday shopping season is off to a positive start, aided in part by lower gas prices. Another popular measure of holiday spending, Mastercard SpendingPulse, found e-commerce sales jumped by an even stronger 8.5% year-over-year on Black Friday. In another sign of sturdy consumer spending, Americans continue to travel aggressively. That’s down 63 cents from the peak in September and marks 60 consecutive days of falling gas prices.

WORTHY, by Jada Pinkett Smith. Let’s get one thing out of the way: If you’re downloading Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir just to hear about the Slap, you have 14 hours, 3 minutes and 6 seconds of listening to do before you reach your goal. Smith’s voice is calm and steady throughout this chapter; it quavers elsewhere, especially when she describes the 1996 death of Tupac Shakur, who had been her friend, protector and ardent supporter since her sophomore year of high school. The chapter “The Holy Joke, the Holy Slap and Holy Lessons” appears near the end of her book for a reason: It’s not the point. Smith also opens up, generously, about her depression, her therapeutic journey and her spirituality.

Binance is also expected to expected to plead guilty to the charges. Zhao, the founder and CEO of Binance, has amassed a fortune that Bloomberg pegs at more than $23 billion. This alleged misconduct paved the way for Binance to become king of the crypto exchanges, prosecutors allege. Prosecutors allege Binance, “knowingly failed” to register as a money service business, willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to implement and maintain an effective anti-money laundering program and willfully caused violations of US economic sanctions. The SEC also alleged that Zhao and Binance commingled customer assets and even diverted some to an entity controlled by Zhao.

Thanksgiving gas prices set to be the cheapest since 2020
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush, gas prices are tumbling fast. This exceeds the typical seasonal drop in gas prices during the fall and leaves the national average at a 10-month low. If prices stay near current levels, this would be the cheapest gas price on Thanksgiving Day since 2020 when Covid-19 caused many Americans to stay off the roads altogether. GasBuddy projects the national average will slide to $3.25 a gallon or lower by Thanksgiving Day, marking the lowest priced Thanksgiving Day for fuel prices in three years. By comparison, gas prices stood at $3.57 a gallon on last year’s holiday following a year of notoriously high prices.

Oil tumbles nearly 6% to four-month lows

US oil prices tumbled almost 6% to a low of $72.16 a barrel — the lowest level since July 7. The selloff continues a sharp reversal from earlier this fall when oil prices threatened to hit $100 a barrel. The latest plunge in oil prices could help drive gasoline prices even lower for Thanksgiving. Analysts blamed the oil market selling on growing concerns about oversupply and weakening demand, including in China. The oil market is now in what’s known as contango, meaning prices are higher for the future than they are now.

New York CNN —A coalition of Muslim bar associations is accusing leading law firms of contributing to Islamophobia and a climate of fear in the legal community. In a letter to more than 100 of America’s top law firms, 13 national and regional bar associations called for the law firms to address Islamophobia and anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian hate. The new letter, sent Monday, went out to leading law firms including Davis Polk; Dechert; Kirkland & Ellis; Paul, Weiss; and Sullivan & Cromwell. It notes that while some law firms issued statements of support for Israel after the October 7th attacks, in the weeks since some firms “refused to even acknowledge the killing of thousands of innocent Palestinians” even though employees have loved ones killed in Gaza. “Everyone at our law firms is entitled to be treated with respect and be free of any conduct that targets their identity and is offensive, hostile, intimidating or inconsistent with their personal dignity and rights,” the letter said.

Trump Media and Digital World said the filing of the financial documents on Monday mark a key step forward towards finalizing their merger. That merger is key for the survival of Trump Media as it would unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. The SEC filings indicate Trump Media lost $59.1 million in 2021 before posting a net profit of $50.5 million in 2022. Still, Digital World, the blank-check firm seeking to merge with Trump Media, is bullish on the venture.
