TOKYO (AP) — Data from a Japanese auto industry association show that China overtook Japan as the world’s largest vehicle exporter last year. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association reported Japan exported 4.42 million vehicles in 2023, up 16% from a year earlier, while domestic auto sales totaled nearly 4.78 million vehicles. According to figures released earlier by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China exported 4.91 million vehicles last year. Japan’s car exports totaled 4.2 million in 2022. Overall, auto sales in Japan have been mostly on the decline since 2000.

These compounds enter healthy plants through pore-like holes called stomata, and travel throughout the leaf, spreading the information around the plant. Scientists think healthy plants can use warning signals from damaged plants for defense. The scientists separated healthy plants from damaged plants but chemicals were able to pass between the plants via an air pump. There is no border between animals and plants," Toyota said.

Musk's Tesla pay was structured without a salary to involve 12 stock option awards that would only be given once performance goals for each of them were met. Though Musk can appeal the decision, there are signs that this battle is about more than just the massive pay package that has propelled him to a $205 billion fortune. The carmaker is currently worth $600 billion, up from roughly $50 billion in 2018, when Musk received his pay plan. So it's reasonable to take Musk at face value when he says his Tesla pay, as McCormick put it, is a "means of bankrolling that mission." Closer to home, Musk's legal battle could trigger a rethink of where Corporate America goes to do business.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. But production has been halted on some of the models, including the 10 models affected by the latest cheating. Sato has acknowledged Toyota group companies need better communication and education about the importance of complying with rules.

The Japanese manufacturer said Tuesday it had sold a record 11.2 million vehicles worldwide in 2023, including its Daihatsu and Hino lineups. By comparison, Volkswagen Group announced earlier this month that it had delivered 9.2 million vehicles last year, up 12% compared to 2022. Volkswagen later gained on the Japanese company, unseating Toyota in 2017. That compared with 104,000 battery-powered vehicles sold by Toyota, which has long lagged behind in the global EV race. The company, which is a leader of hybrid cars, sold 3.7 million electric vehicles total in 2023 when including hybrids.

A Toyota unit used software to measure horse power output that made “values appear smoother with less variation,” Toyota, the parent company, said in a statement. The vehicles “meet engine output standards,” and there is no need to stop using the engines or vehicles, the company said. The company named the affected models and engines, but did not say how many vehicles it would stop shipping. Still, Toyota decided to stop shipping the 10 models that use three diesel engines at issue. Then, it reported that Japan’s government was investigating Daihatsu, the subsidiary, for safety problems that dated back decades.

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota is telling the owners of about 50,000 older Corolla, Corolla Matrix and RAV4 models to stop driving them because their Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel. The recalled RAV4s have Takata driver's air bags while the Corolla and Matrix models have them on the passenger side. The Corolla and Matrix also are under a separate recall because their air bags can be deployed without a crash, the company said. Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. The exploding air bags sent Takata of Japan into bankruptcy.

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota chief Koji Sato apologized Monday to customers, suppliers and dealers for flawed testing at a group company, following a series of similar problems in recent years. The apology came a day before Chairman Akio Toyoda is to announce a “global vision” for the Toyota Motor Corp. group. The latest woes at Japan’s top automaker involve testing required for Japanese government approval at Toyota Industries Corp., which makes diesel engines. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. They include the Land Cruiser and Hilux sport utility vehicles, according to Toyota.

A special investigative committee found irregularities during horsepower output testing for the certification of three diesel engine models. Ten models use the affected engines globally, Toyota (TM) said, including the Hiace van, Fortuner SUV, Innova multi-purpose vehicle and Lexus-branded LX500D SUV. The company said it would take measures such as running new engine certification tests in the presence of regulators as needed. The company holds a near 25% stake in Toyota Industries, which is a key Toyota group company. Shares in Toyota Industries sank into negative territory shortly after the news and ended down 4%.

While EV sales are continuing to grow, they are doing so at a slower pace, research shows. Elon Musk warned a slowdown in sales growth was coming when Tesla reported earnings on Wednesday. The Warren Buffett-backed EV maker, which sells its vehicles in more than 60 countries and recently overtook Tesla on global EV sales, put an early focus on affordable models such as the $10,000 Seagull. EV sales surged 40% year-on-year in the last three months of 2023 —a "strong result by any measure," as the industry research noted. Aran Waid, senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, said growth in EV sales globally was continuing but that it had "fallen short of automaker expectations."

"These are not the same kind of customers who created the initial EV market," GBK President Jeremy Korst told Business Insider in an interview. A new wave of EV shoppers is hitting the market, and the industry appears to be unprepared to meet their needs. Among the group of EV considerers surveyed, Toyota was the most considered brand, with 47% showing a preference for the Japanese automaker compared to 41% favoring Elon Musk's Tesla. Plug-in hybrids ranked very high on EV considerer's preference lists in GBK's study. GBK's study found that EV considerers are willing to pay $7,650 more on average for an EV than a gas-powered car with similar features.

I'll describe how options traders will bet the bottom is in and the levels they may find attractive to do so. Tesla's margins of nearly 11% are twice those of the 2 biggest U.S. automakers, but a bear will point out that Porsche margins are 13%. Japanese economic delegations had visited China every year since 1975, but those visits lapsed during the COVID-19 era when China largely shuttered its borders due to its stringent pandemic policies. During their visit this week, the Japanese business delegates, which included Masakazu Tokura, chairman of the powerful Keidanren, as the Japan Business Federation is known, are due to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday. Japan is heavily reliant on China, where Japanese companies have for years invested in building manufacturing supply chains and forged relationships with local partners. China last year arrested a Japanese executive, an employee of the drugmaker Astellas Pharma, on suspicion of espionage. The move has had a chilling effect on business, Japanese officials say.

The police in Joliet, Ill., were searching on Monday for a suspect in the fatal shooting of eight people, seven of whom were found dead in two homes on the same block on the city’s east side, the authorities said. The suspect, Romeo Nance, 23, was believed to be driving a red Toyota Camry, and “should be regarded as armed and dangerous,” the Joliet Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook. The authorities said that they had discovered seven of the bodies — two in one home, and five in another — on Monday, and that they believed that a fatal shooting on Sunday afternoon about four miles southeast was connected. The police were notified of the seven bodies by the Will County Sheriff’s Office just after 12 p.m. Monday, Chief William Evans of the Joliet Police Department said at a news conference on Monday evening. The motive for the killings was unclear, but the police believe that Mr. Nance knew the victims, who appeared to have been related to one another, Chief Evans said.

TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese automaker that cheated on safety tests for decades said Monday it doesn't expect to resume shipping cars any time soon. The Japanese government ordered a subsidiary of Toyota to halt production of its entire lineup after reports of faked safety test results emerged last year. The Daihatsu Motor Co. skipped mandatory safety tests by copying data from testing on one side of cars to the other, and used timers to ensure airbags went off in tests, a review found. An investigation including third-party experts found 174 cases of faked tests affecting dozens of models, including cars sold under the Toyota Motor Corp. nameplate. The review found that cheating went back 30 years.

As Teslas and other electric vehicles dazzled car buyers with futuristic technology and dreams of a gasoline-free future, hybrid cars began to seem like yesterday’s news. Now, a slowdown in the growth of electric car sales has led General Motors, Ford Motor and Volkswagen to walk back ambitious targets for those vehicles. “Consumers want the same experience they’ve had” with a combustion engine car, said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights for Cox Automotive. But hybrid sales rose even faster, up 65 percent to more than 1.2 million, lifting their market share to 8 percent from 5.5 percent, according to Edmunds. Throw in plug-in hybrids, and nearly one in 10 new cars pairs a gasoline engine with electric motors to save fuel and boost performance.

Here are the most interesting tiny cars I saw on a recent trip to Japan, along with my top pick. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and other locations were awash with tiny "kei" trucks, cars and vans. Kei cars are also lighter, so even though most are still gas-powered, they are efficient. For passengers, these small vehicles may not perform as well as big vehicles in crashes. Still, I was won over by these kei cars.

AdvertisementFor car buyers, the COE is an extra cost that can easily eclipse the actual price of a car. These BMW family cars cost around $103,000 in 2017. COE prices went up to $67,000 that year for lower-end cars, despite more than 13,000 certificates being made available. On Thursday, COE prices for lower-end cars fell to about $48,000, a steep drop that shocked the market. Meanwhile, while unpopular, Singapore's COE prices are working for now.
