CNN —The five days since Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launched at warp speed have remade the 2024 race – and given Democrats new hope of preventing a second Donald Trump presidency. Fundraising exploded, with Harris’ campaign saying she raised $126 million between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evening. And Democrats were more eager to devote their own time to working to elect Harris: More than 100,000 people signed up to volunteer for her bid, and more than 2,000 applied for campaign jobs, Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a Wednesday memo. The strength of Harris’ launch has at times surprised even the former Biden campaign staffers who on Sunday suddenly found themselves working for what was converted into the Harris campaign. Biden’s campaign believed his path to 270 Electoral College votes ran through the “blue wall” states – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The videos began circulating Wednesday, quickly going viral on social media and sparking an outcry from both the public and some politicians. In its statement released on X, Greater Manchester Police outlined what it said were the events that led up to the videos. Police said they were called to Terminal 2 of the airport on Tuesday evening following reports of an assault.

Discovery and Disney launched a cross-studio bundle of Disney+, Hulu, and Max on Thursday, bringing the services together at a discounted price as the entertainment giants look to scale their streaming businesses. Disney+ with Hulu is also available for $9.99 a month with ads. Disney already offers its own streaming bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ at a bargain rate. Earlier this month, Hallmark announced that it, too, will launch its own standalone streaming platform, Hallmark+, ahead of the holiday season. A subsequent pullback saw the price bounce off that breakout level, which also lined up with the 50-day moving average. This is a sector full of low-volatility, high yielding stocks that have often provided downside protection in down market phases. ES just broke to a new three-month high this week, and the stock features a dividend yield around 4.5%. When the broad market averages take a bearish turn, equity investors are often best served by getting defensive. Lamb Weston was the worst-performing stock in the S & P 500 on Wednesday on the back of disappointing quarterly results. The Idaho-based supplier of frozen potato, sweet potato, appetizer and vegetable products to restaurants said fully diluted earnings per share fell more than 70% from the year-earlier period. Consequently, the stock price fell over 28% on Wednesday. At ~ 1.2x price to sales, Lamb Weston is the cheapest it has been in the past ten years. Some of that increase is justifiable; the company demonstrated considerably higher operating volatility than they or investors expected, and the debt-to-equity increase as a function of the stock price decline is also a contributor.

About 10,000 athletes, a record 8.6 million tickets sold and billions of television viewers worldwide: That's the Olympics, and they are set to start on Friday in Paris. Since the 1960s, every city hosting the Olympics exceeded its initial budget by a large margin, according to an Oxford University study. Spending at the 2024 Paris Olympics is expected to come in at under $10 billion — only about 25% over the initial budget, according to an S&P Global Ratings report. About 95% of the venues slated for use during the Paris Olympics existed prior to the city's winning bid to host the Games, according to the S&P Global Ratings report. Stock futures rose modestly on Thursday evening as the major averages head for weekly losses and investors anticipated a reading of the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 42 points, or just over 0.1%. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed about 0.1% each. The activity seemed to be part of a broader rotation into small caps and more cyclical areas of the market. ET, traders will watch for the June reading of the personal consumption expenditures report, an inflation reading that's preferred by central bank policymakers.

More than 10,500 athletes from some 200 countries will participate in the Olympic Games in Paris, but only 15 of them will be from Russia. Back in Russia, the competition will not be shown on television for the first time since 1984. And media commentators expressed disgust that a drag queen carried the Olympic torch — which is antithetical to Russia’s increasing emphasis on what it calls “traditional values” and its crackdown on L.G.B.T.Q. It’s quite a comedown for Russia, a traditional Olympic powerhouse that for years used the competition as a way to project power and foster national pride, and often finished first in the final medal count. And it represents the price the country is paying for its invasion of Ukraine two years ago and the daily mayhem it inflicts there.

The SAG-AFTRA actors’ union on Thursday called a strike against video game companies that use actors’ images or voices in games, echoing its broader strike against television and movie studios last year. The strike will start at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, after more than a year and a half of negotiations. Until the latest strike is resolved, members of the 160,000-person union will no longer “act” in video games produced by Activision Blizzard, WB Games, Electronic Arts and seven other companies covered by an interactive-media agreement. SAG-AFTRA’s demands are similar to those it sought from television and movie studios last year: higher wages and job protections from the threat of artificial intelligence. “We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I.

Middletown, Ohio CNN —Minutes into his first solo event as Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance had already divided his hometown audience here – over donuts. The fallout has left him without a Democratic counterpart after Vice President Kamala Harris quickly emerged as her party’s presumptive nominee. Vance leaned into his biography during his appearance Monday in Middletown, where someone held up a homemade “2028 Vance for President” sign. Andy Beshear – seen as a potential Harris running mate – sought to undermine Monday. “If Joe Biden can’t run for president, he can’t serve as president,” Vance said.

Young men posed in front of posters of the country’s military leader. Over dinner in restaurants, families watched television monitors showing footage of drone strikes. The event was billed as a national cultural festival in the West African nation of Burkina Faso. But it often resembled a mobilization campaign in the all-out war against the Islamist terrorists who have gradually occupied the country in recent years. “The motherland or death,” Alaila Ilboudo, a spoken word artist, shouted onstage to the cheers of crowds at the festival, held in May in Bobo-Dioulasso, the country’s second largest city.

Reuters —Video game voice actors and motion-capture performers have called a strike over failed labor contract negotiations focused around AI-related protections for workers, bringing about another work stoppage in Hollywood. The SAG-AFTRA has called a strike of the Interactive Media Agreement that covers videogame performers, effective July 26, the union said on Thursday. The Interactive Media Agreement expired in November 2022 and was being extended on a monthly basis during the talks. Apart from AI protections, the SAG-AFTRA’s most pressing issues in the contract negotiations for videogame performers are higher pay, medical treatment and breaks for motion capture performers. The offer presented to the SAG-AFTRA features AI protections that include requiring consent and fair compensation to all performers working under the IMA, Cooling said.

In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

It’s just a decisive move toward America First on foreign policy.”Trump’s selection of Vance is one of the clearest barometers of the former president’s tightening hold over the GOP. Those included Christian conservatives, the business community, congressional insiders and traditional Republican foreign policy hawks shaped by Ronald Reagan’s vision of the US as the muscular leader of the free world. Instead, with Vance, Trump chose an acolyte and potential successor who could deepen and extend the direction the former president has set for the party. Vance has been most unequivocal in criticizing the internationalist approach to foreign policy centered on robust alliances. With the selection of Vance, Trump has broadcast his belief that he has conclusively won the internal GOP debate over all aspects of US interactions with the world – foreign policy, immigration and trade.

Heading into earnings next week, Microsoft is positioned to continue capitalizing on the growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services, underscored by the cloud revenue growth reported by Alphabet this week. The company's leading position in the AI and cloud computing makes it a compelling earnings trade for next week. MSFT has recently pulled back to a significant support level at $430, which has previously acted as a resistance. This pullback provides a favorable entry point with reduced downside risk after bouncing off that level this week. Microsoft's relative strength to the S & P 500 and momentum are also positive heading into earnings.

The discovery at the presidential office Wednesday came after South Korean authorities warned the public to beware of falling objects as suspected North Korean trash balloons moved south toward the northern area of Gyeonggi province. “While monitoring trash balloons sent by North Korea in cooperation with the Joint Chiefs of Staff today, we identified trash that fell in the presidential office area in Yongsan,” the presidential security service said later in a statement. “North Korea’s actions clearly violate international law and seriously threaten the safety of our citizens,” JCS said in a statement after an earlier balloon incident. Despite repeated North Korean warnings, the South Korean activists were “not stopping this crude and dirty play” she said. A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday allowed former President Donald J. Trump’s defamation suit against ABC News to move forward, rejecting an effort by the television network to dismiss the litigation as spurious. The lawsuit, filed in March, argued that ABC’s star anchor, George Stephanopoulos, defamed Mr. Trump by saying on-air numerous times, in a March 10 segment on “This Week,” that the former president had been found liable for raping the writer E. Jean Carroll. Mr. Trump was found liable last year in a Manhattan civil case for sexually abusing and defaming Ms. Carroll. The jury did not find Mr. Trump liable on a technical charge of rape, which is narrowly defined in New York State law. “But a reasonable jury could conclude Plaintiff was defamed and, as a result, dismissal is inappropriate.”

XOM is within 7% of its 52-week high of $123.75 from April 12, which also is its all-time high. However, that same volatile trading range since April has become part of a much larger potential bullish pattern — which is best seen on this weekly chart. The area shaded in yellow is the same bullish pattern highlighted above. In other words, a breakout to new highs now finally would help extend the 14-year bullish pattern breakout (2008-2022). The best-case scenario, then, would be seeing XOM breakout on both an absolute and relative basis.

Rupert Murdoch is locked in a secret legal battle against three of his children over the future of the family’s media empire, as he moves to preserve it as a conservative political force after his death, according to a sealed court document obtained by The New York Times. Mr. Murdoch, 93, set the drama in motion late last year, when he made a surprise move to change the terms of the Murdochs’ irrevocable family trust to ensure that his eldest son and chosen successor, Lachlan, would remain in charge of his vast collection of television networks and newspapers. The trust currently hands control of the family business to the four oldest children when Mr. Murdoch dies. Those three siblings — James, Elisabeth and Prudence — were caught completely off-guard by their father’s effort to rewrite what was supposed to be an inviolable trust and have united to stop him. Remarkably, the ensuing battle has been playing out entirely out of public view.

Earnings season is heating up, as Tesla and Google-parent Alphabet are set to report their latest results after the bell Tuesday. I'm considering a bullish trade in QQQ for Wednesday — contingent on a positive market reaction to GOOG and TSLA earnings. This allows you to construct a $1 wide bull call spread and risk as little as $50 to make $50 per winning trade. I've suggested a 482-483 call spread because QQQ is trading at 482 as of writing this. If earnings are strong, QQQ will likely gap up and open at a higher price tomorrow.
