Others in my generation — I'm on the cusp between Gen Z and millennial — were on the same page, determined to seek out "authentic experiences." Travel agents felt like vestiges of the preinternet world, like video-store clerks or pay phones, and I couldn't imagine ever needing them. And in a 2023 survey of 2,000 American travelers, 38% of Gen Z and millennial respondents said they preferred a traditional travel agent over online booking. There are travel agents specializing in just about every type of travel imaginable, from multicountry group tours to luxury all-inclusive trips. New Delhi CNN —A one-of-its-kind insurance policy has started making payouts to tens of thousands of women across India to help them cope with the impact of extreme heat. Indian women working in agriculture typically earn about 300 rupees ($3.60) per day. Outdoor work in such extreme heat can lead to chronic rashes, dizziness, burns, infections, and miscarriage, according to Climate Resilience for All. More than 46,000 women were given additional insurance payments, with some receiving up to $19.80 each. Overall payments across the program amounted to over $340,000, Climate Resilience for All said in a statement on Wednesday.

Then, three healthy ferrets were placed in the same enclosures with three of the sick animals. These animals could touch, nose and lick the sick animals, and all of them became ill.Next, the CDC tested airborne transmission by putting three healthy ferrets into an enclosure where they could breathe the same air as sick animals but couldn’t touch them. In her lab, ferrets with previous exposures to seasonal flu strains didn’t get as sick when exposed to new flu viruses compared to those with no prior exposure to seasonal strains. How much help we might get from past exposures to flu viruses is difficult to predict, however, which is why vaccination would still be important to tune up our immunity. They never spread the virus to any of the other animals in the facility — including themselves.

No One Told the Cows Not to Lick the Artwork
  + stars: | 2024-06-10 | by ( Thomas Rogers | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
On Sunday morning, Roman Mathis, a farmer on the outskirts of the bucolic Swiss city of Basel, noted with concern that one of his cows was standing in a small wading pool filled with beans that had recently been installed next to his barn. It wasn’t wholly unexpected: Mathis had allowed gallerists and artists to use his property as part of a freewheeling art event called the Basel Social Club. As he stared at the pool, he couldn’t tell if it was it was an artwork or a random piece of detritus, and if he should shoo the animal away. “Some of this art speaks to me, though at a certain point it passes a threshold,” Mathis said, gesturing to black inflatable tubes that had been affixed to his barn’s facade. “But it’s been interesting to go along with it.”

Payden's assets have grown with the firm: As majority owner, she boasts an estimated net worth of roughly $700 million and is a "newcomer" on Forbes' recently published 2024 list of America's Richest Self-Made Women. "I was hired at a 25% discount because I didn't know the difference between a bond and stock," Payden told the Los Angeles Times in 1999. Within a couple years, she moved to Los Angeles to join Scudder, Stevens & Clark, a prestigious money management firm. She failed at least one of those attempts because she "didn't play golf" at an annual meeting on a men-only course, Payden told students at Notre Dame in 2011. Since then, she's built her firm into one of the largest private money management firms in the U.S.

Can Big Art Make It in Las Vegas? Urs Fischer Weighs In.

The Swiss artist Urs Fischer suggests beginning our day together with coffee in the Village. No, this is the Las Vegas version, tucked beyond an ocean of slot machines in the far corner of the timeworn, low-lit New York-New York Hotel and Casino on that notorious stretch of real estate called the Strip. “There’s more to see here that’s interesting than some other newer places,” he says, leaning back on a metal bistro chair in front of the faux glassed-in storefront of a stage-set tenement building that showcases a top-hatted mannequin wrapped like a mummy, holding a wicker basket of prosthetic hands and feet. “It’s artificial, but in a good way.”That, of course, is a matter of taste, as is the very notion of Las Vegas itself. That’s where he lives with his two daughters — Charlotte, 15, and Grace, 8 — in a modest-sized but lushly gardened 1920s home near Dodger Stadium.

It marked the first time since 1991 that the Swiss air force has operated from a highway. During the Cold War, aircraft in Europe trained to operate from non-traditional airstrips and improvised runways to reduce vulnerability. To reduce their vulnerability to long-range strikes, the air force is focusing on disaggregating and using improvised runways to conduct operations. The fighter aircraft were quickly refueled while their engines were running — a tactic known as hot-pit refueling — before they took off again. US Dollar notes and euro coins are arranged for a photograph on Sept. 11, 2017. The dollar steadied on Wednesday as traders pared back on riskier bets in emerging markets while waiting on an interest rate decision in Canada and on U.S. services data. Japanese real wages fell for a 25th straight month in April, data on Wednesday showed, as inflation outpaces nominal pay rises. The Swiss franc rose for a fourth straight session on the dollar overnight and at 0.8902 per dollar is close to breaking through its 200-day moving average. The New Zealand dollar was steady at $0.6173, while the Canadian dollar held the middle of a months-long range at C$1.3678 per dollar.

Update: On Thursday the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that the federal bankruptcy code does not shield members of the Sackler family from liability for civil claims stemming from the opioid crisis. The United States Supreme Court is now considering whether the bankruptcy system should have given this wealthy family a permanent shield against civil liability. But there is a bigger question at stake, too: Why is a company with no lenders turning to the federal bankruptcy system in response to accusations of harm and misconduct? The maker of OxyContin is one in a long line of companies that have turned Chapter 11 into a legal Swiss Army knife, tackling problems that are a mismatch for its rules. But Chapter 11 was designed around the goal of helping financially distressed businesses restructure loans and other contract obligations.

China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning attends a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing on January 15, 2024. China has denied allegations by Ukraine's president that Beijing is pressuring other countries not to attend an upcoming Ukraine peace summit, with the foreign ministry claiming that Beijing's position on the matter remains "fair and just." Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning, denied those charges on Monday, saying that "hegemonism and power politics are not China's diplomatic style." The peace talks, scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 15-16, will focus on the over two-year Russian invasion of Ukraine started in February 2022. China has repeatedly called for a cease-fire and dialogue concerning the war in Ukraine, and said it will help facilitate peace talks.

Although recent reports suggest the plans have been scaled back, the 2.4km still due to be built will be the largest linear city in existence if it is completed. The Spanish architect Arturo Soria is widely credited with designing the first linear city, "La Ciudad Lineal," in 1882 on the outskirts of Madrid. "Linear cities are an extreme form of urban dispersal — community development and social cohesion still need centrality," Gold told BI. A linear city may not have this capability," explained Lovgreen. In my opinion, linear city schemes are best left as design exercises for third-year architectural students," Gold said.

There is a reason the value meals are only returning on a limited basis, says Shubhranshu Singh, associate professor of marketing at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, who has studied the economics of fast-food value meals. "They want customers to get the value meal and then buy more, the idea isn't that the consumer will buy a value meal and walk away," Singh said. "If consumers do that, selling that value meal will be such a bad idea." "How can they serve $5 value meals with that minimum wage and still make a profit?
