I took a fantastic drive the other day across the top of Connecticut, from Simsbury over to Kingston, N.Y., through old tobacco fields and cow pastures and apple orchards and into the Hudson Valley under a bluebird sky. Slow-roasted salmon with salsa verde? I settled on artichoke carbonara (above), with bucatini and a garnish of raw egg yolk, to almost literally gild the lily. I drove over the bridge from Rhinecliff in afternoon sunlight and could almost see the dish glimmering below me on the river. I like it on any Sunday, but if you’re in need of a fantastic Mother’s Day meal, it’d be extra nice this evening.

It's great that banks and credit-card companies are getting better at discerning which payments are fraudulent and which are legit. Credit-card fraud protection is still far from perfect, but there's no denying that the technology is improving. So I reached out to some credit-card companies and academics to learn more. On Friday night, in the premiere of his appealingly chaotic livestreaming variety show “Everybody’s in L.A.,” which runs every night this week, John Mulaney delivered a monologue about his adopted city next to a map that broke it down into a crooked jigsaw puzzle of neighborhoods. It’s the biggest comedy showcase of the year (with more than 500 offerings, a 40 percent increase from the festival’s already mammoth debut event in 2022) but also something of a corporate flex. Who else could get Hannah Gadsby and Shane Gillis in the same festival or draw the talk-show titans Jon Stewart and David Letterman to host events? The most newsworthy shift this year was the aggressive move into livestreaming events, following the blockbuster success of Chris Rock’s 2023 special, “Selective Outrage,” about being slapped at the Oscars. London CNN —Two of Europe’s biggest oil companies, Shell and TotalEnergies, are considering abandoning their stock exchanges for Wall Street in a move that would deal a hammer blow to London and Paris. Shares of TotalEnergies and Shell trade on a price-to-cash flow ratio of 4.7 and 5.2 respectively, compared with a ratio of 8.4 for Exxon Mobil (XOM) and 7.6 for Chevron (CVX). Alastair Syme, managing director of global energy equity research at Citi, says Shell and TotalEnergies have long traded at a discount. Investors would “be much more comfortable” buying European energy companies if they were part of the more valuable S&P 500 benchmark index of US equities, according to Syme.
