Following the comments from top Fed officials on Monday, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said the U.S. central bank does not need to raise interest rates any further, and that he sees no recession ahead. "Everybody has one eye on the Middle East conflict and one eye on what's happening with bond yields. The decline in bond yields is the key driver today," said John Praveen, managing director & co-chief investment officer at Paleo Leon. "If tensions escalate bond yields might decline further because they're a safe haven but equities would sell off in that instance because of increased uncertainty and risk aversion," he said. But the flight to safety has made Treasury yields fall enough to push up equities," Tuz said.

The Kremlin will likely wait until after the next election to announce any mobilizations, the UK MOD said. AdvertisementAdvertisementRussia doesn't want to announce an "unpopular" big mobilization of troops until after its next presidential election, according to UK intelligence. "It is therefore highly unlikely that any further mobilisation wave will be implemented before the March 2024 presidential election," it said. Putin has not yet announced that he will seek a new term in office, but the UK MOD said he "will almost certainly run again." The UK MOD said that, despite this, the election process remains "a core tool of political legitimisation" for the Kremlin.

"There's been very little marking down of (private) assets," said Con Keating, head of research at Brighton Rock Group, an insurance company for pension schemes. "No-one knows where the next big blow-up for pensions will come from," said Henry Tapper, founder of pension market analysis group AgeWage. He said heavy selling of commercial property and private equity stakes by pension schemes is raising questions over private capital valuations. "It's the right approach to obviously put some scrutiny on private market valuations." But in deals where private equity firms and investors buy and sell portfolios of investments, assets are being valued at less.

A retired US general called it a "classic failure of technology," given Israel's surveillance apparatus. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe latest attack on Israel by the militant group Hamas was a failure of Israel's huge surveillance and defense systems, a retired US general told CNN. Retired US Air Force Colonel Cedric Leighton called the deadly attacks a ''classic failure of technology," given the strength of Israel's defenses. But Leighton said that Hamas launched missiles with a short, lower trajectory, making them harder for Israel to shoot down. In a separate CNN interview, Leighton said it doesn't make sense that this attack could happen, given Israel's vast intelligence apparatus.

Failure to secure the cash they need at rates they can afford, could lead to insolvencies and layoffs. "I think we're now starting to finally see the fall of some of the zombies," she added. This can include restructuring loan repayments, offering reduced rates or other more relaxed terms and can help banks avoid loan write-offs. "Banks and private equity shops have waited to see if the tide turned but higher rates don't allow hiding anymore." LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) has told London-based staff it will track their entry-gate swipes against logins to the bank's computer network to ensure employees meet targets for working from the office, a staff memo seen by Reuters shows. BNP employs more 4,500 people in Britain, with London regarded as its "second headquarters" after Paris, according to its website. BNP's memo, presented in the format of a Q&A, said staff would not be able to opt out of the tracking. The bank's USA & Canada divisions have also updated their policy to include "visibility into in-office presence of staff monitoring". While it sympathised with staff whose commutes were impeded by adverse weather or industrial action affecting London's public transport systems, the memo advised staff those days would still count as "in office" working days.
