Rioters have torched cars and public transport but also targeted town halls, police stations and schools - buildings that represent the French state. Some said Nahel, who was shot dead on Tuesday, could have been any of them, or their sons, brothers or friends. Yann Bastiere, a representative of the Unite SGP police union, said the officer who shot Nahel was innocent until proven guilty. Belaidi said teachers were not replaced and hospitals lacked resources, which has led to a feeling of abandonment by the state. In anticipation of violence stretching into a second evening, 2,000 extra police officers were mobilized Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Darmanin expressed support for police and firefighters, saying: “shame on those who did not call for calm.”The officer who allegedly shot the teenager was taken into custody Tuesday and will undergo questioning by prosecutors, Nanterre prosecutor’s office told CNN. The death of the 17-year-old was pronounced Tuesday morning “following at least one gunshot wound” and despite the intervention of emergency medics, the Nanterre prosecutor’s office said earlier.

And while Biden’s growing list of Republican challengers differ on many issues, when it comes to the economy, they’re in agreement that Biden failed. In addition, a tight labor market has left many small businesses with ongoing hiring difficulties. Here’s what Biden can take credit for – and what he can’t. In other aspects, the labor market certainly had a boost from Biden’s fiscal policies. Since then, the American workforce has consistently outpaced the pre-pandemic workforce.

The James Webb Space Telescope detected a key carbon molecule in space for the first time ever. The methyl cation, or CH3 + , molecule was found in a young star system in the Orion Nebula. CNN —Astronomers have detected a crucial carbon molecule in space for the first time using the James Webb Space Telescope. Methyl cation is considered a key component that helps form more complex carbon-based molecules. The space observatory detected methyl cation in a protoplanetary disk, called d203-506, swirling around a young red dwarf star. ESA/Webb/NASA/CSAWhile methyl cation doesn’t react efficiently with hydrogen, the most abundant molecule in the universe, it reacts well with a wide range of other molecules. But methyl cation wasn’t detected in space until now.

How to repel mosquitoes, according to science
  + stars: | 2023-06-24 | by ( Kate Golembiewski | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Here’s the lowdown on how mosquitoes hunt us, what attracts them, and what scientists recommend for keeping them at bay. The science of mosquito bitesMost of the time, mosquitoes drink plant nectars and juices, and even help pollinate flowers. “How attractive you think you are to mosquitoes might not necessarily correlate with how attractive you actually are to the mosquitoes,” McMeniman said. The itchiness and discomfort from mosquito bites come later when the perpetrator is no longer at risk of getting swatted. No silver bullet exists to protect yourself from mosquito bites, but get a good bug spray and reapply it as needed.

PARIS, June 21 (Reuters) - A French robot that can dive to 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) underwater is on its way to help find a tourist submersible that vanished as it descended to the Titanic wreck and it could help free the sub if it is trapped, its operator said on Wednesday. "Victor is not capable of lifting the submarine up on its own," said Olivier Lefort, the head of naval operations at Ifremer, the state-run French ocean research institute which operates the robot. But he told Reuters the robot could help hook the 10-tonne submersible called Titan to a ship with the capacity to lift it to the surface. Ifremer was part of the team that located the wreck of the Titanic in 1985 with American underwater archaeologist Robert Ballard. French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who is reported to be among the five people inside the missing submersible, previously worked at Ifremer and piloted its flagship Nautile submarine that was used to examine the Titanic wreck.

LONDON, June 21 (Reuters) - Telecoms company Veon (VON.AS) said on Wednesday it would invest $600 million in the infrastructure of its Ukrainian subsidiary Kyivstar, the war-ravaged country's largest mobile network. The Amsterdam-listed company said the funds would help upgrade the mobile operator's infrastructure, including improving connectivity and 4G services throughout Ukraine. The country has seen much of its mobile infrastructure hit by Russian rocket attacks. Kyivstar's technical teams have performed nearly 150,000 repairs since Russia invaded last year, Veon said, adding it ensured that 93% of the network is operational. Kyivstar has lost around 7% of its active customer base - or roughly 1.7 million subscribers - since the war started last February.

Johann convinced Nargeolet to write his book 'In the depths of the Titanic' because he said his kids were super-fans. The underwater explorer needed convincing to write a book, Johann said, because he wanted to spend all of his time diving. CAREER IN FRENCH NAVYDirector of underwater research for RMS Titanic, which owns the rights to the ship's remains, Nargeolet started researching and exploring the Titanic wreck when he joined the French ocean research institute Ifremer in 1986, after a 22-year career in the French navy. They met after Marsh contacted the explorer to ask for the contact of a Frenchman who had survived the Titanic. A Word That Became a Point of Pride
  + stars: | 2023-06-18 | by ( Sarah Diamond | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In Word Through The Times, we trace how one word or phrase has changed throughout the history of the newspaper. The word “pride” originally had a negative connotation, in which a person exhibiting pride had an “unduly high opinion of oneself,” according to the Webster’s New World College Dictionary. One can feel pride in a personal accomplishment, another person or a city or country. For example, in 1863, a Times article called Central Park “the pride of New-York.”During the civil rights and gay rights movements of the 1960s and ’70s, “pride” experienced a significant transformation. Of course, the event is now known as the uprising at the Stonewall Inn, a moment that brought on the modern gay rights movement.

It’s no surprise that the courtship between the noble Romeo — here played by the sweet-faced Toheeb Jimoh, from TV’s “Ted Lasso” — and the teenage Juliet will end in calamity. Her “Romeo and Juliet,” performed without an intermission, begins with the cast clawing feverishly at a stage wall, onto which are projected crucial lines from the prologue. But as if in haste to get straight to the meat of the play, the wall soon collapses to reveal the citizenry of Verona mid-combat.

Spokespeople for Safran and Raytheon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Safran said on June 5 it was participating in a "competitive process" for Raytheon's flight controls business, without commenting on the chances of an agreement or the terms of a deal.
