South Carolina state Rep. Seth Rose, a Democrat in Columbia and one of Marsh’s attorneys, called it a “really tragic” case. But at the hospital, Marsh learned that her infant, a girl, had not survived. Historically, birth outcomes for Black women in Orangeburg County, where Marsh lost her pregnancy, have ranked among the worst in South Carolina. She is taking classes at a local community college and hopes to reenroll at South Carolina State University to earn a four-year degree.

It came a day after a joint fleet of Chinese and Russian warships sailed around Japanese northern coasts. Earlier in September, Russian military aircraft flew around southern Japanese airspace. The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by two destroyers, sailed between Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni and nearby Iriomote, entering close to Japan’s waters. According to Japan’s military, it scrambled jets nearly 669 times between April 2023 and March 2024, about 70% of the time against Chinese military aircraft, though that did not include airspace violations.

A 16-year-old boy died Wednesday after he was apparently struck by lightning while riding a bicycle in Florida, police said. The crystal is stored in the Memory of Mankind archive in Hallstatt, Austria. “The visual key inscribed on the crystal gives the finder knowledge of what data is stored inside and how it could be used,” said Kazansky. In 2018, Kazansky and his team used the memory crystal technology to store Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” trilogy of science fiction books, which were then launched into space aboard a Tesla Roadster. In May 2000, the group managed to drive Israel out of southern Lebanon after a grueling guerilla conflict. On the evening of July 30, an Israeli drone fired two missiles into a residential building in southern Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commander Fu’ad Shukr. Taken together, the missile attack and the exploding devices represent a dramatic infiltration by Israel of Hezbollah’s critical command and control networks. Israel denied any important targets were struck and no evidence has been made public to contradict that denial. Israel is no longer willing to tolerate the slow-burn war on its northern border and is resorting to ever more extreme and potentially escalatory measures.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. New York officials released Monday forensic sketches and informational flyers about a possible new victim in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, in an effort to identify them and get new leads in the roughly 20-year-old homicide. The remains of the victim, referred to as “Asian Doe,” were found in 2011 near the bodies of at least 10 others near Long Island, New York’s Gilgo Beach. Long Island architect Rex Heuermann, 61, was arrested last year in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Heuermann was initially charged with killing three women — Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Melissa Barthelemy — and dumping their bodies near Gilgo Beach. Authorities previously disclosed that “Asian Doe” was wearing women’s clothing, but did not provide further details.

Adverse weather from Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, has killed hundreds of people in Vietnam and Thailand, and floodwaters from swollen rivers have inundated cities in both countries. The flooding in Myanmar began last Monday, with at least 74 people killed by Friday, based on state media reports. Myanmar has been in turmoil since a military coup in February 2021, and violence has engulfed large parts of the country. “Central Myanmar is currently the hardest hit, with numerous rivers and creeks flowing down from Shan hills,” the OCHA said. State media also reported that five dams, four pagodas and more than 65,000 houses were destroyed by the flooding.

I applied for a green card after working on my H-1B visa for a year. By this point, I had lived in the US for about six years and created a whole life here, but the green card process was very painful. The process makes life pretty horribleHaving a work visa and going through the green card process are privileges, but it is very hard to separate the emotional component. Luckily, Microsoft paid for the attorneys in the green card process, and no cost came out of my pocket. In 2022, I finally received my green card after three years.
