This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Jackson Heights, Queens, has been called “the most culturally diverse neighborhood in New York, if not on the planet.” It is also a neighborhood with the some of the least green space in New York. On Roosevelt Avenue, the elevated subway line rattles above a steady stream of car traffic. Storefronts and pushcarts on the narrow, bustling sidewalks offer all kinds of food — Thai, Chinese, Mexican, Himalayan, Indian, Colombian, Guatemalan, Ecuadorean, Peruvian and more — but it’s tough to find any calm. Yet just three blocks north, running parallel to Roosevelt, is 34th Avenue, where a stretch of 26 blocks, running east to west, has been closed to cars from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day since 2020.

CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

So he can see why some might think he is taking a risk by focusing on abortion rights in campaigning to Latino men. For decades, Democrats saw the issue as a losing one with Latinos, who tended to be more religious and to say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. Some strategists still consider it a risky subject among Hispanic men, who have typically expressed more concern about the economy. But Mr. Vasquez, who represents a border district in New Mexico, and several other Hispanic male Democratic candidates said there was no avoiding the abortion debate this year. They point to polling and Democratic electoral victories in the two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned that capture how Latinos’ views on the issue have reversed.

Mexico City CNN —Heavy rains associated with Hurricane Beryl and the earlier Tropical Storm Alberto have led at least 200 crocodiles to enter urban areas in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, across from Texas, state and federal authorities said this week. So far, authorities say they have captured and relocated around 200 of the big reptiles since Alberto pelted the region with rain in June. Beryl brushed the same area before making landfall in south Texas earlier this week. Authorities said the heavy rains raised water levels in coastal lagoons, leading the animals to crawl into cities like Tampico and the nearby cities of Ciudad Madero and Altamira, where at least 165 crocodiles have been captured and relocated. The Biden administration took steps on Wednesday to prevent China from circumventing American tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum by routing those imports through Mexico. The administration said it would impose tariffs on imports of Mexican metals that are partially made in China. American officials said the move would close a trade loophole that has allowed cheap, state-subsidized Chinese metals to circumvent existing U.S. tariffs. The United States will now impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican steel that is melted or poured outside of North America before being turned into a finished product. Previously, that steel would have entered the country duty free.

As the second half of the year kicks off, Bernstein shared its latest selection of stocks that look attractive on both a quantitative and fundamental level. Bernstein's basket of stocks includes 14 names across six sectors that are highly ranked on a quantitative basis, not crowded and rated as overweight by the firm's analysts. The updated basket comes as the broader market trades at record highs, making it difficult for investors to find attractively valued stocks. Here is a look at some of the names in Bernstein's latest quantitative and fundamental basket of stocks: Telecommunication giant T-Mobile made the list. Analyst Daniel Roeska's $55 price target corresponds to another potential 19% upside from the stock's Tuesday closing price.

On a summer weekend, mid-heat wave, the promising smell of clean fryer oil drifted through a parking lot in Costa Mesa, Calif. Inside Mercado González, children were on tiptoes, squeaking hands against the glass at El Moro, watching cooks pipe and fry swirls of dough to a precise golden brown, then snip the coils into curved batons and roll them in cinnamon sugar. It was an efficient and beautiful routine. Good churros aren’t hard to find, but El Moro is both a chain and an institution, and before the mercado opened last fall, the only place you could try its famously long, thin, thoroughly crisp-edged versions was in Mexico. A group of teens in front of me, dazzled by a promo video for the churro ice-cream sandwich, workshopped their orders out loud while the line shuffled along.

These private quasi-governments are called homeowner associations, or HOAs. While California has the most HOAs of any state (50,000), Florida has far more HOA residents as a percentage of its population. The association also provided its residents with "the usual privileges of a citizen in any free state," Tullock wrote. Readers will not be shocked to learn that Clarke and Freedman also found that HOA residents were more likely to be white or Asian than non-HOA residents. (Cashin observed that several states, including New Jersey and Texas, had laws allowing HOA residents to subtract the cost of privately provided infrastructure from their taxes.)

The three joined a growing list of consumer brands contending with customers' deep frustration over high prices — and wariness that prices will only rise more. CNN —Crew on board the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, were called on to tackle a fire this week as the gigantic vessel was berthed in a port in Mexico. The Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed crew members controlled the blaze, explaining all crew are trained to handle such situations. Social media users on an Icon of the Seas Facebook group spoke of minor disruption to their day, but proceedings were quickly back to normal. The $2-billion Icon of the Seas made headlines when the vessel launched earlier this year, with its seven swimming pools – including a record-breaking 17,000-square-foot water park. In March, a fire broke out on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship, with footage captured by a passenger of the ship’s tail ablaze.

She lived in housing provided by Stanford University with her two small children and her husband, who was pursuing a Ph.D. there. For four years, Ms. Sheinbaum immersed herself in a new life as an immigrant academic in the United States. She landed on the front page of The Stanford Daily student newspaper for protesting the North American Free Trade Agreement. It was not immediately clear when that would happen.
