New York CNN —The deal reached Thursday evening that ended a strike by 50,000 portworkers has a lot of winners and few if any losers. But that wage deal stopped what could have become the most disruptive US strike in decades had it lasted weeks or months. The strike halted the flow of imports and exports across dozens of ports, what could have been a massive blow had the strike continued. Not that this was the deal that the the United States Maritime Alliance, the group that negotiates on behalf of ship lines, terminal operators and ports, wanted. But it was the one they could settle for after the Biden administration made clear it wasn’t going to intervene.

A fourth university has forfeited its women’s volleyball match against San José State University following controversy over the gender identity of one of the team’s players. In the lawsuit, Slusser says the teammate who was the subject of the media coverage told her she was a trans woman. Tony Hoang, the executive director of Equality California, said that in forfeiting matches against SJSU, school administrators are harming all students involved. A soccer team consisting entirely of transgender men has made its debut in a regional league in Spain, overcoming administrative challenges and prejudice to become the first all-trans squad to achieve federated status in Europe. Spain passed a pioneering trans rights bill last year designed to make it easier to change a person’s legal gender identity. Hugo Martinez, 24, told Reuters he faced abuse when he began transitioning with gender-affirming hormone therapy and was forced to leave the women’s soccer team in which he had played. The experience prompted Martinez to put out a call online for other trans men seeking to play soccer in a safe environment. But for its fans and players, trans men having the right to play their favorite sport on equal terms is far more important than the score.

Days after thousands of dockworkers went on the biggest strike in decades, the union announced a tentative agreement on wages Thursday and extended a deadline for bargaining. "The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. have reached a tentative agreement on wages," the union and the alliance said in a joint statement. "Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume," the union said. The International Longshoremen’s Association, known as the ILA, argued that big global cargo carriers have raked in huge profits since pandemic-era supply-chain snags drove up freight rates, and that workers haven’t sufficiently shared in those gains. Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. Here’s the deal: The East Coast port strike is getting a lot of attention for its potential disruption to the economy — which is precisely the point. No dockworkers means no bananas (or whatever), which means no profits for the companies that produce and ship them. While research shows automation has obvious benefits, like lower operating costs and fewer human-related errors, port automation does not, on its own, significantly improve performance, according to a 2018 McKinsey report.
